Curtain Up! follows a group of raucous elementary school kids in Chinatown as they prepare for a production and begin to discover themselves. Behind the scenes, they face families’ expectations and uncertainties post-graduation.
Will they have to let something go?
The film unveils dilemmas from their honest – often humorous – perspectives.
Our film team has spent eight months with these kids, including traveling with them to Atlanta for the most recent edition of the Junior Theater Festival in January, up to their recent premiere of Frozen Kids in June. Not only have we been able to document their enthusiasm on stage, we've also connected with their families at home and followed their lives behind the scenes.
We are now in the post-production phase for the film. Your generous support will go toward technical enhancements (e.g. color correction, sound mixing, original music), marketing and publicity, as well as submissions to film festivals around the world. Help us bring the kids' stories to greater heights!
Having made films since high school, Hui Tong is passionate about theater, music and teaching kids. Prior to Columbia, Hui studied history at Cornell University.
Kelly Ng spent five years at Singapore’s second-most-read newspaper, TODAY, covering the migrant community, crime, law and health. Curtain Up! is Kelly's filmmaking debut.
Hui and Kelly were supported by Emmy nominated filmmaker Carlos Sandoval in the making of the documentary.
Risks and challenges
Our team has been working on Curtain Up! for almost a year now and are eager to bring it to a wider audience. We need proper financing to complete our post-production, which include an original soundtrack, graphic design, sound editing, color correction and a budget for festival submissions. Please help us share these stories far and wide!
We will also keep all backers posted in case of delays in delivering any rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
