A unique compilation of 100 recipes for twelve decadent Indian-themed feasts, for both the novice & the seasoned cook.

‘A Dozen Ways to Celebrate’ is a unique compilation of 100 decadent recipes that come together as twelve extra-ordinary Indian-themed feasts that you can recreate in your own kitchen. This cookbook:

  • Showcases authentic Indian eats and treats in dynamic and inspired ways with new pairings to create ‘made-from-scratch’ delicacies using simple store-bought ingredients.
  • Explores the Ayurvedic principles of eating ‘well’.
  • Makes Indian feasts ‘achievable’.
  • Inspires both the novice and the seasoned cooks through personal stories, tips, tricks, time-savers and diet-friendly ideas.
  • Celebrates Indian food as a balanced collection of complimentary flavors and tastes.

‘A Dozen Ways to Celebrate’ intends to be a cookbook that breaks away from the repetitive and standardized content otherwise found in typical Indian cook-books for the western audience. It revisits the exquisite and authentic recipes, flavors and techniques of Indian cuisine lost in the gauche and predictable landscape of ‘typical’ Indian fare. Each of these celebrations is a tested collection of dishes of a four course Indian meal that I have featured at a Curry Cravings dinner.

With recipes that create wonderful new standards and the suggested adaptations to help readers customize each feast to specific dietary or personal requirements, and a wealth of ideas for making everything, and making it simpler, this book is truly for everyone.

Bibliography, resources

'A Dozen Ways to Celebrate' will first be produced as an

  • E-book in multiple formats

Producing this book is my commitment towards preparing a technically complete and visually interesting resource book. Every pledge goes directly towards making this unique product worthy of your time, your bookshelf and your kitchen.

To keep costs low, I will be bartering services with some of my professional friends. I have the skills to produce a print-ready file and am including those at no cost. I am estimating this project to cost $3,000 as detailed below:

‘A Dozen Ways to Celebrate’, e-book only.
  • Editorial & Publishing Costs: $2500.00
  • Limited professional photography: $500.00
  • Food-Photography & Graphic Design (In-house): $0.00
Total e-book cost: $3000.00

Print Book

Once an e-book is created, I know that supporters would love to have a print version of it to use in the kitchen. I would too!! For this, I estimate needing additional funds of $3750.

If this campaign is able to raise a total of $6750 or more, supporters at the $120.00 level and above will each receive one complimentary, signed, print copy of "A Dozen Ways to Celebrate".

Here is a quick snapshot of the rewards at each pledge level. Please review pledge details for more information.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

I am confident that this will be a very resourceful book. It fills a void in the representation of the Indian cuisine. As a first of its kind, I expect to deliver a high quality product with both the e-book and the printed copies. For those choosing to attend a Curry Cravings Supper Club Dinner or host a private event, the experience will be truly unique.

Prior to making a pledge, I invite those new to Curry Cravings to join me in conversations on Facebook, ask for references, view some of my previously published materials (linked through by bio. on Kickstarter) and peruse recommendations from clients and ex-colleagues on LinkedIn.

I am a pragmatic and hands-on person. Given my past experience in project coordination and graphic design, I am as methodical with publishing as I am in the kitchen.

Obviously, the biggest hurdle is obtaining the funding, since it is an 'all-or-nothing' approach.

Once this hurdle has passed and as the project progresses, as with any project, I expect some hiccups along the way. For example I expect:
1. Initial teething pains setting up a Google+ Hangout and scheduling such with a national audience.
2. Project timeline overruns with the editorial team.
3. Coordinating dinner parties across the country.

I believe that any of these problems are surmountable because I have a small core of close professional friends who have promised to help me through all of it pro-bono!

In order to keep supporters abreast of progress, the reward levels include various interim products such as the monthly e-recipes and Google+ Hangouts.

In addition, there are several ways by which supporters can stay tuned to progress on the book, and know that we will have a fantastic cookbook to look forward to:
1. Through the Curry Cravings Facebook page, supporters will be able to remain engaged in the process and have a common community to interact with.
2. I also remain accessible via email to all my supporters.
3. I also will be working with printers and proof readers who come with personal references, to ensure timeliness and excellence in quality.
4. In exchange for a mention, I am asking the photographer and food-stylist friends in my circle to contribute their time pro-bono, so I can get expert feedback.
5. I feel confident of being able to execute out-of-town events easily since I have done these previously.

It will be my responsibility to execute this task well, a responsibility I will take very seriously. I assure you, you will be delighted with this venture that you are so generously supporting.

Thank-you for your confidence in this project. I am looking forward to creating a wonderful resource for you!

FAQ

  • Being ServSafe® certified, I have worked successfully with families following vegan diets, vegetarian diets, South-Beach diet, folks who have gluten allergies, nut allergies, soy allergies, dairy restrictions and more. Within our family too, we have dietary restrictions and food allergies, and the occasional ‘diet’ of choice, so I know first-hand, that some things are a plain and simple ‘no-no’. The best thing about the Indian cuisine is that on an average, about 97% of typical Indian recipes easily lend themselves for dietary adaptations. Nearly all of the recipes in ‘A Dozen Ways to Celebrate’ are adaptable to vegan and vegetarian diets. Some recipes include nuts (which can be omitted without influencing the flavors) and there may be 4-5 recipes at best, that include nuts as a defining component. Each recipe will be tagged for dietary classifications (vegan, vegetarian, adaptable, nut-free, ritual friendly / Hindu Kosher etc). I will make appropriate recommendations for alternates, for dishes that use seafood and meat. The exclusive monthly chapter previews available at the $120 and up level, is a reward perk specifically created to allow backers to shape this book in a way that suits their life. With this book, you can be assured of having a great go-to book for Indian food that fits within your lifestyle.

  • Indian cuisine is as much about conversation, as it is about having the confidence to execute a recipe. I see much benefit in having these one-on-one conversations with supporters. It is available as an opt-in only, and you can choose not to participate if that does not suit you. It is 90 minutes of time spent towards familiarizing yourself with a cuisine and a project you are backing. I think it is time well spent.

  • I would love to ship out this book to you, wherever you are. I had honestly not anticipated needing to ship internationally. I will absorb the cost just so we can have a more global community.

    Last updated:
  • The abridged e-book contains 12 recipes. Pledge tiers receiving an abridged e-book will get additional 6 recipes – while the e-book comes together, for a total of 18 recipes. The complete e-book and print book will contain 100 recipes.

    Last updated:
  • The ebook will be compatible with iBooks, Nook, and is Kindle friendly. At the end of the campaign, I will include a survey to ask backers receiving an e-book (complete or abridged) for their preferred format.

    Last updated:
  • Absolutely!!

If you do not have an e-reader, indicate so at the end of the campaign when I send out a survey / questionnaire, and I will make case-by-case provisions.

Free software is available for reading these e-books because such require a different format called '.pdb' suitable for it (you needn't worry about the format, I'll send you the correct one). This way, I can protect the content from unauthorized sharing.

  • Before I go into details, you must know that both books will include the same recipe content, but the print book is a reward ONLY if we reach the stretch goal for this project (of $6750). There are a few main differences: how one would use in the kitchen, whether your name appears in the acknowledgements, or if my John-Hancock, on a first edition of a unique book is a desirable enough keepsake.

The e-book is NOT meant to be a pdf document. In addition to the content, as any good book should include, it includes links to online resources. The print version will include room for cooks to write their own notes per recipe (as I sometimes do), and will be pretty enough to display. It is my portfolio of work and I would want it to be fabulous to look at, as well as remain functional. Supporters pledging $120 and above will also have exclusive monthly chapter previews, even before the book is finished, and also regardless of whether or not a print version becomes available. Not many authors allow you that opportunity for one-on-one feedback before their book is out.

It boils down to how and where backers use the book and what is the best match to their lifestyle and cooking interest.

  • This is an excellent and most often asked question. The fundamental goal of my proposal was to create a unique and achievable product, and be able to share it with people who would use it directly.

To price the book (print or e-version) I took into consideration the following factors: external cost for proof-reading and editing a 200 page detailed reference document (this is not a novel or a children’s book), some professional photography, publishing costs (ISBN creation, e-book conversion) as well as printing and shipping costs, for a low volume order of print books, if we reach the stretch goal of a print book. There are also commissions to be paid to Kickstarter and Amazon Payments to process the pledges before any funds are available to use towards the book.

I am absorbing several costs, even at the e-book level: refining, re-creating and re-testing the 100 recipes before they go out so that they are perfect for your kitchen, in-house photography, time spent towards creating Caloric counts for each recipe, as well as overall design of the book itself so you can be proud of the project you’ve supported. I am also making myself available for Q and A’s through this process. I am not paying myself to create the book but providing 6+ months of pure sweat-equity and real labor, so that supporters get a tested, finished wonderful unique product. I don’t have a staff on hand who will do any of the in-house leg-work for me.

Whether it is 10 books or 1000 books, there are definite costs to be incurred. If a print book is created first, an e-book may be slightly cheaper to create. But set-up costs for a print-book are higher, creating a higher pledge goal, risking the project itself. Small amounts add up very quickly when the funds are limited to begin with. Some of these are included in the budget, others cannot be quantified. Seemingly intangible costs are also very real costs. I have to take all these into account and actually bear them.

  • Kickstarter provides a fantastic platform to raise money for projects that are singularly unique, creator-driven, artisan quality and absolutely limited edition. Some of these projects may or may not make it to main-stream big-box retail, ever. Some do, with angel investors with deep pockets to back it.

For ‘A Dozen Ways to Celebrate’, it might take some time to take it from this drawing board visceral form, to a cheaper mass-produced version. This would include additional costs in the form of commissions to publicists to pitch the book to publishing houses, new external editors and cost cutting measures that will directly reflect in the product. What most buyers don’t know is that authors receive a rather low portion of the earnings for their product and receive these earnings only as royalties of volume sales.

I estimate that it may be 2-3 years before you can find this book in any other form, including a self-published book, if at all it ever gets there. I expect to be onto the next, second, ‘Dozen Ways’, the second book in this series by then, with a completely new set of recipes, concepts and themes.
