The Climate Change Board Game Taking the World by Storm
The Climate Change Board Game Taking the World by Storm
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, November 8 2019 8:00 PM UTC +00:00.
Set in a post apocalyptic world destroyed by climate change, Tremor is a 2-to-4 player strategy game where you redesign and rearrange the board every turn. In Tremor, you play as ancestral animal spirits, trying to save their species from a disaster ridden world.
Tremor can be played as a competitive or as a 2 vs 2 cooperative team game. It’s easy to learn and hard to master, making it suitable for all skill levels. Games generally last between 30–60 minutes depending on how seriously you take your strategy.
This component list shows the prototype art styles. The upgraded thematic art is on its way! See "Thematic Art" Section.
We opted for a colour-blind friendly, flat art style because it eases decision making. That being said, some of our supporters have expressed a preference for thematic art.
We want to make sure our supporters are getting the product that will give them the best possible experience, so we've got an artist ready for commission to paint up alternative thematic tiles, cards and boards. Here's an example!
We'll be including thematic art as an early stretch goal. Once achieved, you as a community can decide which design/style you would prefer. If the community choose to stay with our original flat art, we'll arrange a stretch goal of equal value.
The Extra Large Player Aid Card summarises the actions available to you every turn. Being open to changing the sequence of your actions from turn to turn will be essential to moving forward. The board state changes every round, so being flexible is key. You can also supplement your turn with Animal Abilities, Climate Cards, Earthquakes and by leveraging Catastrophes.
The backside of the Player Aid Card has a diagram for every disaster. Manipulating disasters is how you get an edge. We've made these sheets as big as we can (20cm x 20cm), because it's great to see at a glance what your options are, and how the disasters work.
“The beauty of the game is strategizing around ever changing landscape – you might think you’ve got your next turn sorted and the next moment you are blown off course by hurricane winds, washed further away from your target by tsunami waves, or caught in a landslide and there’s no escape from reality. Each player decides what disaster will strike and where – you can use the elements to your advantage or you can throw your opponent in the middle of a raging tempest, now that’s fun!” - Medusa Gaming
"I had an absolute blast. They taught it really well, it was fun to play, it was quick to learn and it has a good message. PLUS, I got to play as a penguin, which I’m always a big fan of." - The Dice Men Cometh, Southern Hemisphere's leading Board Game Review Podcast.
"This is an amazing idea with a wonderful message to it. The only feedback I have is where can I get a copy? I love everything about this. Absolutely the most exciting game in this contest so far.” - Michael Robinson, Beat the Robinson's Board Game Review, Board Game Workshop Competition
“The artwork is really, really gorgeous on this game...I like that fact that it comes with a TONNE of different options as far as the different characters go, they all have their own unique abilities and unique different tokens...they went the extra leg and gave everybody their own unique icons and abilities that all feel very, very different.” -Unfiltered Gamer
“It was super fun! I got to both screw people over, and screw people over when they tried to screw me over... back. The inception level layers of screwing each other over got pretty deep!” - Evin, Blood on the Clock Tower.
A really cool ‘maze-like’ game. The ability that you can twist all the different tiles around to change the maze for other players to make it difficult, or lure them into a false sense of security only to use one of your special powers and then flip it, mixed with the ability to save up special of disaster abilities with the rolling of the die, means you have to think on the fly and created this interesting mix of skill and luck that was really cool. - Shannon, Creator of Lucidity & Runika.
“Really, really fun game. Lot’s of decisions, lots of stuff you can do, and even if you’re falling behind you can always come back and win.” - Rodney, Boardgame Design Journal.
""Great, timely theme, fantastic art. Very strategic - love the dynamic play surface.” AnnaMaria Jackson-Phelps, Girl's Game Shelf. Board Game Workshop Competition
“I love the concept of the game, I think it’s really timely with what’s happening in the world at the moment. I really love the strategy behind it. My first game I almost won, but it’s surprising how quickly the tables can turn. You think you’re going to win and then all of a sudden the board shifts and changes. Great game, really fun to play, really easy to learn.” - Daniel, WYRDO Games.
“Tremor is a great game for many reasons: Player interaction, relevant theme, and the different types of strategies you can take during the game to win, it’s fantastic! If you’re a game lover, this is a must for you.” - Telomander Game Reviews
So many times we pull a game off the shelf, mindlessly remove its contents, go about the board or roll the dice or play the cards and inhabit its universe while worrying about only how we're going to win. We munch on chips, sip on our drinks, relax in our comfortable chairs in our home's warmth during the winter or air conditioning during the summer, never thinking the designer may be trying to tell us something with the game we've bought. The message you've given us here is one we've heard for the past couple decades, but it's presented in a depressingly beautiful way. Not only is its table presence gorgeous, but the tragic prediction it makes of what kind of planet we leave behind should not be dismissed as you go about the game. - Board Game Workshop Design Contest 2018
If you'd like to get to know the TreeSisters, check out this video;
We know many of you have asked for multiple copies for gifts, or larger Board Game groups in the same areas. Simply choose the Tremor Game + 5 Trees Reward Tier, and multiply your pledge amount by the number of copies you would like. If you wanted 3 copies, you would pledge 3 x $59 = $177 (AUD - approximately $120 USD). So if you want 10 copies, you would pledge $590 (AUD - approximately $400 USD).
After the campaign is over we will make sure you get your allocated number of games, and yes, we still plant 5 trees per game, so 10 games means 50 trees!
Combined Shipping: We are working with with our fulfilment partners to offer combined shipping discounts. You will not be paying the full shipping price again and again, only a few additional dollars for each additional game.
A Retailer Package will be considered depending on demand. If you are a retailer or own a game store and are interested in buying multiple copies please contact us at email@example.com
For regions like the EU and Asia, our estimates are based on averages to all countries in those regions. When shipping is charged in the pledge manager, it will be priced specifically for every country. Shipping may be cheaper for countries like France, Spain and Belgium.
Rulebooks in the stated languages will be available via PDF download. The tile and spirit board is just tiles and symbols, so is suitable in any language.
At Curly Bros Games, we're committed to two things: Giving you the best product we possibly can, and Sustainable Business Practices.
Tremor has been going through play-testing and refinement for nearly two years, and we're confident at this point it's a balanced asymmetric strategy game with a great tempo.
In terms of the actual product itself, we're committed not only to using some of the most reliable and experienced board game manufacturers, but to make sure they are FSC certified. That means that all wood/cardboard products have been ethically sourced from sustainable forests. We will also be doing our best to ensure we use as little plastic as possible in our games.
Our partners TreeSisters are not only planting five trees per game funded, but are guiding us through the process of finding the highest quality ethically sourced materials.
After the campaign, we will provide confirmation from TreeSisters of the number of trees planted, and their location.
A huge thank you to the organisations and businesses who have supported us in our journey to fight climate change.
Risks and challenges
If you've gotten this far, thank you!
Game design is what we're good at, but publishing is new to us. That's why we're not taking any risks with logistics, and have outsourced the job to some of the industry's best, most established manufacturers, fulfillment companies and pledge managers. We have spent a lot of time reaching out to the boardgame community to establish relationships that will help us deliver Tremor swiftly, and at a price that's accurate and fair.
There is a risk of delays around manufacturing and fulfillment, however we have added a two month buffer in case any issues arise. If everything goes according to plan, you should receive Tremor a little earlier than predicted.
This campaign may present other challenges once it is up and running, but we are 110% committed to addressing any questions, quandaries or concerns quickly and with the best interests of our backers in mind.
We're also here to take feedback and suggestions throughout the campaign so that we can deliver the best version of Tremor possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
