The Book

AZR-0: Robots in the Wild is an illustrated journal of a scientist sent to study a band of feral robots on a distant planet. It is 120-plus pages of handwritten text and color illustrations that will make you feel like you’re holding a movie prop in your hands.

The story takes us across the galaxy to planet AZR, where novice robologist Verdie Z. Goodsey has been sent by her research institution on a solo field study project to observe the elusive – and adorable! – AZR-0 robots.

"Day 14: I found more droppings today – six washers and three lug nuts in all. And this time, I think they’re fresh! The fine dust that covers everything on this planet hasn’t had a chance to settle thickly on the washers, so I estimate that they couldn’t have been discarded more than 30 minutes ago!

I’m thrilled with the idea that I’m so close, but I have to curb my excitement to move carefully and quietly so as not to spook the robots."

To get close enough to study these robots, she has to overcome the challenges of the planet’s harsh conditions, her university’s scant project funding and the incessant annoyance of the stinging conduit beetle, not to mention the extreme wariness of the AZR-0 units themselves – all to bring us an up close look at this unique band of wild robots.

Project Recognition

It’s wonderful to get attention for the project, and we’re especially pleased to be getting recognition from people who really know design, robots and fun pop culture when they see it – like Mythbusters’ own Adam Savage!

So please share the project to get even more people talking about it, and if you see the project mentioned anywhere let us know!

History of the Project

Cesare starting drawing these little robots for fun as a way to warm up before working on other projects, and they started to accumulate fast.

Meanwhile, there’s nothing Kirstie loves more than to imagine the animated lives of inanimate objects. Where did these robots live? What were they doing? Finding out the answers to these questions (and more) turned out to be a lot of fun.

The Materials

Like all of our products, what will make this book different will be the special details before you even open the book.

The cover will be made of a durable paper stock – the same material used for labels on your favorite jeans! It will have rounded corners and a unique binding that very few printers can do anymore. What’s more, the design will use silk-screened spot-color to re-create an academic notebook, with our character’s handwriting in metallic ink on the cover.

It will be archival quality and will be printed using carefully-selected, high quality materials and the insane attention to detail that Curio & Co. is known for. All in all, the tactile nature of the materials will feel familiar in your hands – and really special.

First and foremost, the book will be the scientist’s journal of her field study trip. So all of the text will be handwritten and printed to look as if she wrote it directly into your copy of the book.

Sustainability

The products that we make for Curio & Co. are designed to last. Recycled materials have their own story to tell, and as collectors ourselves, we’re interested in how treasured objects from the past can be rediscovered by future generations with new memories and new nostalgia attached. However, we’re aware that the choices made today can affect future generations as well and we carefully consider each step with sustainability in mind.

Shipping is not only one of the most expensive stages of the production pipeline, but also a major source of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. For this project, we’re doing our best to choose smart shipping solutions to minimize the carbon footprint. We’ve selected two printers – one in China and one in Germany. The printer in China will do a terrific job we’re sure, but if we can we’d really like to avoid having the books travel so far. If we hit our stretch goals we plan to move the production to Germany, where they will use paper and materials made locally in Germany – and where we won’t have to have samples shipped back and forth as often, as Cesare can be on-site to oversee the production.

Bring the Artwork Home

There are over 100 robots in the book (and even more that didn’t make the cut!) and every single one started out as a sketch on paper. The sketch, done in red pencil, was then worked over in ink, and then colored with paint and markers. After that, the drawings were scanned in and finally laid out for printing. Phew!

And since the adorable AZR-0 robots are too cute to stay inside the book, our rewards offer a way for you to get the get the artwork on your walls.

Print-a-Robot

Get your AZR-0 collection started right away with a print-ready PDF exclusive for backers. The artwork is 6 x 6in (15 x 15cm) and depicts two of the robots in an image from the book. All pledge levels from €10 will receive a link to download the file. Then: print, hang and enjoy!

Picture Perfect

With all their gadgets and gizmos – not to mention their relentless cheerfulness – the robots are a lot of fun to draw. To keep the fun going a little longer, backers at the ‘Picture Perfect’ level will receive a 6 x 6in (15 x 15cm) piece of original (and one-of-a-kind) artwork of one of the AZR-0 robots in ink and paint suitable for framing.

Piece of the Action

At the ‘Piece of the Action’ pledge level, you’ll receive this original page of hand-drawn robots created for the book. (Obviously there is only one available, as it’s the actual one-of-a-kind drawing.) The 10.5 x 13in (26.7 x 33cm) page of drawings comes in a custom frame and is presented with one of the red pencils – worn down to the nub! – that Cesare used to create this very book. Other than a time machine, nothing is closer to having actually been there when Cesare created the robots!

Be a Part of the Book

The fun of making the products from the Curioverse is the feeling that you could just walk right into the world – but with some of our reward levels you won’t have to. You’ll actually be a part of the book with your name mentioned right in print.

Our Table Of Elements

An AZR-0 Table of Elements (similar to the real periodic table of elements) will be printed on the endsheets as part of the book’s handy reference guide. But rather than use the standard solids, liquids and gasses we’re all familiar with here on Earth, our book’s table of elements includes the names of the pledge supporters at the ‘Elemental’ level who are themselves elemental to bringing the robots to life.

Here’s how we’ll do it: Your last name will be transformed into one of the unique chemical elements of the AZR-0 world – using the standard naming conventions. The Relative Atomic Mass of your element will be your Zip Code/Postal Code, and the Atomic Number will be determined by your pledge number – and they’ll be listed chronologically so that you can find your position in the Table of Elements. Your Chemical Symbol will be made up of your initials, adding middle initials or ending letters as needed to differentiate your symbol from any other supporters.

The space for the table is limited, however, and once all the elements have been ‘discovered’ we can’t add any more. So you’d better be quick!

Your Namesake Scientist

While she tracks the AZR-0 robots, our robologist Verdie Z. Goodsey is alone on the planet and out of communication range. Although she relishes the once-in-a-lifetime experience of her journey, she does miss being able to share it with her colleagues back at the institute – or some of them anyway, since her workplace has as many cantankerous meddlers as any other. Those of her fellow scientists that she misses the most are the mentors who have supported her and offered advice and encouragement – just like our backers! To honor this support, a select group of backers at the ‘Namesake Scientist’ level will be immortalized in the book as one of those scientists.

More Books from Curio & Co.

AZR-0: Robots in the Wild will be another piece of the Curio & Co. world that we’ve been building since 2010. All of our products connect together in an alternate universe that re-imagines the past and plays with nostalgia. We’ve created vintage advertisements, pins and playing cards – along with five other books. You’ll receive all of those books – including the Eisner-nominated Finding Frank and His Friend as well as the Gadabout TM 1050 Time Machine User’s Manual – as part of the ‘Start Your Own Library’ pledge level.

Santa’s Little Helper

For backers with a long shopping list – upcoming robotics class reunion or company-wide or client roster Christmas gifts – we’ve made it possible for you to share the AZR-0 robots with everyone you know! Backers at the ‘Santa’s Little Helper’ pledge level will receive 200 copies of the book at a super discount of €32.50 to give to friends, family, co-workers, neighbors or fellow commuters to show off your fantastic good taste.

Shipping

We’ve planned the project to minimize the shipping costs – we’ll be sending the bulk of the books to fulfillment companies in the US and Europe, and these companies can secure a better deal on packaging material and delivery rates than we ever could.

Still, keeping the prices as low as possible means that we can’t ship everywhere. We hope that we can add more countries to the list in the future, but for now, these are the only countries we can ship to:

Share the Shipping

We’ve kept the shipping costs in mind when designing the book, and because of the weight and dimensions of the book – sending two books doesn’t increase the shipping cost and can be sent for the same price as one. So call a friend and pool your orders, and you can send two books to one address for the same shipping price as for sending one book. Just select the ‘Share the Shipping’ pledge!

For the Locals

Curio & Co. was established in Vienna, and our local supporters mean a lot to us. To give backers in the area a chance to pick up their rewards and save on shipping, we’ve set up a brand new reward level: ‘The Vienna Local.’ Local backers can select this level to pick up their copy of AZR-0: Robots in the Wild directly from our studio in Vienna, and pay just €40 for the book plus 10% VAT (or €44 total). What’s more, any locals who want to select a higher reward level can use the same pledge level. Just enter the higher pledge amount for the reward you want (Elemental Support: €65 + €6.50 VAT = €71.50, or Share the Shipping: €130 + €13 VAT= €143). Then instead of shipping your rewards – we’ll get in touch and you can stop by. Bis bald!

The Curio & Co. Story

Curio & Co. was founded in 2010 to create entertainment properties from an alternate universe. Since then, we’ve been having a great time with world-building projects like the Eisner-nominated book Finding Frank and His Friend, and the Gadabout TM 1050 Time Machine User’s Manual.

What We Do

Our passion is entertainment. From animation and comics to vintage advertisements and games – our products have built a playful world from which to look at pop culture.

We are extending the childhood game of make believe with our products and making them really immersive experiences – with all of the details (down to the names of fictional artists or production companies) and the choice of materials carefully chosen to create an artifact or prop from another world.

About Cesare

Cesare Asaro has one foot in Europe and one foot in the US. He was born in Italy, moved to California when he was 14, and has lived in Austria since 2000.

He has worked on both continents as a design consultant for large organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency at the United Nations and Benetton Megastores, as well as managed a freelance business as a storyboard artist with projects for varied clients in the advertising industry. Most recently, he has worked in the animation industry on projects like Three Delivery for the Animation Collective, Sesame Street’s stop-motion Bert and Ernie's Great Adventures and Disney’s Princess and the Frog.

He relies on his background in mechanical engineering, industrial design and fine art to create believable facsimiles of period-specific drawings and illustrations. From pencil to digital originals, Cesare recreates the past to provide a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

About Kirstie

Storytelling has always been a part of Kirstie Shepherd's life. She grew up in California, in a family where stories were told as a means of sharing family histories, entertainment, and of settling disputes over household chores. She won her first award for storytelling at the age of five.

Kirstie is a published author with experience in writing for magazines, newspapers and business publications in Europe and the United States. In addition, she has worked extensively on communication projects that lift the story off the page and bring it to life, including writing and developing shows for groups of 120 school children aged 5-15, and serving as a spokesperson in the US national and Los Angeles metropolitan area radio and TV broadcasting.

Kirstie builds imaginary worlds and produces entertainment collectibles from these worlds. The products draw on her imaginative storytelling abilities, both on and off the page, to create a world that is fantastic yet believable. From settings and characters to storylines and props - her work reveals an extraordinary world that's lurking just under the surface of our own ordinary lives.

Thank You!

Your pledge will make it possible to print and ship the book, but it will also allow us to expand the Curio & Co. world. So, thank you so much for supporting the project and letting us share these little robots with other pop culture fans just like you.

Risks and challenges

Our Plan

The book is mapped out and the content and design is progressing along to print. Once the campaign’s over, we’ll transition to full production mode and start preparing the files to go to the printer this autumn. We’ve already made arrangements with two printers – one in China that will do a terrific job to bring the standard design to life, and an alternate printer in Germany who can handle some of the extraordinary details we’ll incorporate if we hit the stretch goals. Then, once the printing is done the books will be shipped to fulfillment companies in Europe and the US and be on their way to your doorstep. Signed, sealed and delivered in December 2016.

The Budget

To produce a top-quality book that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a film, we’ll be using expert printers and high quality materials. But it won’t be the most expensive book you’ve ever seen – just the best!

And supporting the project means that not only will Kickstarter backers have the satisfaction of knowing that they made it possible to produce the book, they will also be able to get a copy of the book for less than the €60 retail price.

The Challenges
Every project has risks, and for this project we’ll be using a printer and a fulfillment company that we’ve never worked with before – so printing and shipping are somewhat outside of our control. But we’ve built a buffer into our timeline that ensures that we have enough time for the production and distribution.

What’s more, this project will be our sixth book and our seventh major Curio & Co. product, so we know what to expect. We have certainly experienced all of the many ways a production can go wrong – and we’ve never missed a deadline!

You will also receive a copy of the book – with your name listed in our table of elements – as well as a special backer print-ready PDF and exclusive updates that will bring you up-close-and-personal into the production process and give you a glimpse at the printing of the books.
