Will Powell rouses himself awake from a deep sleep. He lights a cigarette then slowly meanders into the next room where his ex-girlfriend, Andrea Wilson, is duct taped to a chair. He sits across from her as though this is a completely sane manner in which to explore their recently broken relationship, and he begins to tell her how much he misses her and wants her back.
What follows is a journey into their failed relationship. It is a funny, poignant, visceral retrospective. The verbal war the two wage ultimately reveals two equally flawed and damaged young people whose relationship sadly served only to enhance and magnify their respective imperfections.
** I came up with the idea to write Cupid's Requiem after listening to a few people talk about their previous relationships in which they did not get closure. These people were very upset by the ending of their relationships that didn't end on their terms. So the initial concept was to write a film about a guy who wanted closure so badly that he kidnaps his ex-girlfriend so he can get it. But that didn't seem like enough of a story. It seemed like a 15 page short and I knew there was the potential to truly explore something darker, which greatly appealed to me.
I made the decision that I wanted to challenge myself as a writer to create a screenplay that took place in one location. In the beginning I was unsure if I could pull it off. I was afraid that by page 25 that the script would run out of gas. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I had a lot of experience with dysfunctional relationships. And several friends of mine have as well. I took some of my own experiences as well as some very dramatic experiences of people I knew and did what every writer is told to do in Creative Writing 101-I wrote what I knew. I added a lot of extra drama and intensity to the mix and the idea fell into sharper focus.
Because I am a fan of actors and great acting- and because the film takes place in one location- I decided I would make this screenplay about the characters. Or, more importantly, about the acting! I decided that the gas that I was so afraid to run out of was actually limitless because the characters had so much to say. And it was and is the way the characters deal with the situation and each other that propels the screenplay and the film. The cat and mouse game that they play is rather unique. And having the protagonist and antagonist roles flip flop from scene to scene intrigued me as well. As a reader of the screenplay and ultimately a viewer of the film, you are confused as to whom you should like. And it can flip flop from one person to the other. The subtle goal was to put people right in the middle of this relationship. To have them experience real world relationship feelings through the script.
In the end I wanted to write a screenplay that was original. Or as original as humanly possible. That is always what drives me to write. I am hopeful that everyone will enjoy the finished project. We had a great cast and crew on this. And the picture will be way better than the screenplay!
*** Thank you all so very much for taking the time to see what we are up to! Our film is called Cupid's Requiem. It is a very edgy SAG Ultra Low Budget feature film that we shot on the Canon 7D. The images from the film are quite fantastic and the acting and cinematography are really great as well.
We are basically seeking completion funds to help us with post production. We've run into some financial road blocks that have brought post production to a stand still. We'd be forever grateful if anyone could help us out. We have several categories of donations mapped out and all donations big or small will not only be incredibly helpful but also INCREDIBLY appreciated.
Here is what we need to complete the picture. Funds for covering the editing process, color correction and audio clean up- all combined will cost us $1,500.00. We also have a few marketing strategies that are worth mentioning. Most of our marketing strategies involve online ad campaigns that establish the main female lead as a "Missing Person" somewhat similar to our flyer on this Kickstarter profile. We also plan on using Facebook and viral marketing to push the film in an original way.
Lastly, we want to have a screening of the film at the legendary Plaza Theater in Atlanta. Some of the funds will go to securing the venue for the one night Premier - which you have the opportunity to attend. The cost for the venue is $500.00 for an evening, which brings the total to $2,000.00.
Any additional donations will go towards music and score as well as miscellaneous marketing. Our website (www.cupidsrequiem.com) is currently undergoing an overhaul, so please bare with us!
On behalf of the entire Cupid's Requiem team I thank you all for your time and support!
