About

Button Soup Tarot is a Multi-Artist, collaborative deck from the members of Cult of Tarot Forum.

We have a real passion for the art of tarot cards. The CoT forum supports artists and their work in every way we can. Connecting beautiful decks with the people who love them is a big part of what we are about.

It was only natural that we would eventually launch into our own creation. Starting last August that is exactly what we did.

The response to a group-deck project was swift and enthusiastic and in a very short time it was organised and underway.  Every week since, artists have been submitting their work, and the style and feel of this deck has shaped and grown into something more beautiful than any of us could have imagined was possible.

Over 40 artists contributed to this deck including M.M. Meleen, Benebell Wen, Pamela Steele, Attila Blaga, Jessica Henry, Yasmeen Westwood, Melissa Wotherspoon, Julianne Victoria, and many more.

Button Soup Tarot is the creation of many hands and many hearts all focused on the same goal: to create a real and readable Tarot deck that expresses a vibrant spirit. The result is a cracking good deck that is charming and fun, yet is also steeped in meaning, mystery, and symbolism.

The Card Back

We have the great honour of having our card-back designed by M.M. Meleen, creator of The Tabula Mundi Tarot and The Rosetta Tarot. She's designed something quite extraordinary for us incorporating the theme of the deck, classic symbols of the tarot and even the Cult of Tarot logo.

It's a remarkable and inspired work.

Special Feature

Each piece of art created for this deck has been placed within a frame designed to bring a unity to the varied styles presented. Every aspect of the frame was carefully chosen to accentuate the individuality of each work while at the same time pulling everything together to form a unified and cohesive deck of cards.

On each card, the art is "matted" with a thin gold edge. To accomplish this effect in the final product, we are printing that edge using gold foil.

The result of this extra touch will bring these cards to another level, one that celebrates the artistry that has gone into every single card.

The Little White Book

Though we are still putting it together, the book will be probably between 75-100 pages and will be comprised of card meanings written by each artist as well as an artist statement to allow us to share the ideas and vision that brought each of us to our individual designs.

(the booklet will be text only, I included the images here just for reference)

What You Get

Each deck consists of: 78-cards, standard tarot size, 70x120mm, printed on 350gsm Art Paper cardstock with a smooth matte finish, with gold foil trim on each card face (see pic above) and gold foil edging. The deck comes in a decorative printed and very sturdy 2-piece cardboard box. A guidebook authored by the artists is also included. (approx 75-100 pages)

If you choose the reward "Buttons Delight" you'll get 1 Button Soup Tarot (described above) AND 1 deck  Friar's Delight Lenormand. (You can see reviews of Friar's Delight here)

(Because we are partnered with a shipping company located near our printer, shipping costs worldwide are also very reasonable.)

Why "Button Soup?"

We wanted a name that really captured the spirit of what we're doing. There's a story, which where I am originally from, is called Stone Soup. It's about a community coming together to help a travelling wanderer make a pot of soup. Each villager contributes something.  At the end, they all enjoy it together in a celebration.

When I shared the idea with the group. I soon learned that the same story is told everywhere but with slight cultural differences.

It's basically always the same, although it may be a different person who comes to town. It could be a traveler, a monk, a soldier, an old woman, a mischievous kid, or a Jester, or Fool.

The main ingredient changes too. Sometimes it's called Nail Soup, or Wood Soup or even Axe Soup! But the one that really rang the bell was Button Soup.

Just as that soup, with only a button for a starter, magically grew into something for all to share and enjoy, Button Soup Tarot is a deck of cards made with the same heart and spirit of community.

Supporting the Forum

The Cult of Tarot Forum is a place entirely devoted to the art, practice and study of Tarot and related topics. It is a friendly and supportive place where members  can learn and experience these interests, without distraction, in a pleasant and uplifting atmosphere.

The Cult of Tarot does not run random ads, does not charge a membership or subscription fee, does not make areas or features inaccessible to some members and does not actively campaign for donations.

Any profits made from sales of Button Soup Tarot will go directly to the continued maintenance and support of the forum, keeping it free and accessible for years to come for all who share in the many aspects of the practice and study of Tarot.

When you back Button Soup Tarot, you're not just getting a charming, one-of-a-kind  deck, you're also supporting a dynamic community of talented people who love Tarot.

We hope you'll support our work and, and if you haven't already, join us at the forum!

Risks and challenges

As the organiser of this project, I do have some experience with producing decks and successful fulfilment . I recently completed a successful Kickstarter that delivered ahead of schedule.

I will be using the same printer and shipping partner that I used last time with very good result.

There are some challenges remaining as the entire deck is not yet complete although it very nearly is and every day we get closer to the full 78-cards. I will continually provide updates here on the progress of the deck. You can also follow along at Cult of Tarot Forum. There is a counter on the home page indicating how many cards are finished.

( As of Nov. 19: 67 of 78 cards are finished. The rest are all in progress and expected in well before this campaign ends. )

The booklet also needs to be assembled and requires input from each artist. However, motivation for this project is very high and although it will require a fair amount of organisation I am confident we will finish this project before the Kickstarter ends, allowing us to go into production immediately.

One other thing is our production and delivery schedule will no doubt be impacted by the end of year holidays. For this reason, I have named March as the target delivery date to be on the safe side, although it could easily be sooner.

We are all as excited to see this finished product of all our work as you are to get it!

    M. M. Meleen (creator of the Tabula Mundi Tarot, the Rosetta Tarot) did the original design for our card-back.

With this Reward, you get 1 Button Soup Tarot deck and the original artwork by M. M. Meleen.

    There is only one available.

    From her description:
"A multitude of hands offer the suit symbols - homage to Pamela Coleman Smith - but with human colored hands instead of hands the godly white of Kether. Kind of in keeping with the idea that this is a collaborative tarot work that many hands contributed to. And I even incorporated a take on the CoT logo on the soup pot (the moon, sun and person).

It's an actual drawing on A3 sized hot pressed watercolor paper, done in permanent marker and then tinted with watercolor and gouache. " (A3 is 11 x 17 in. or 279 × 432 mm)

This is a true one-of-a-kind offer.
