About

The Curse of El Cucuy

A comic book series adapted from a screenplay by writer Craig Phillips. It is a horror and coming of age tale based loosely on the Latin boogeyman myth of El Cucuy, set in modern times, adapted from an award-winning spec screenplay.

MORE: After the untimely death of her mother, anxious but whipsmart teen Rita Flores moves with her father to her mother's hometown in the Arizona desert, to live with an eccentric elderly aunt. There Rita discovers a dark family secret. EL CUCUY, the Latin Boogeyman, isn't a fairy tale—he’s real and tormenting this bordertown until he gets what he wants. Is Rita the only one who stands in his way? Along the way her life is changed by a cast of characters that include her eccentric great aunt Lupe, her new friend and neighbor Candace--a semi-goth artist who believes in both the supernatural and the eyerolling stupidity of the human race, a priest who knows more than he leads on, a wayward boy named Javier who develops a crush on Rita, and her father Ben, struggling with the death of his wife while he tries to rebuild a new life with his daughter. All in the very strange little town of Las Malezas, which is full of secrets and history.

This project is to help fund volume 1 of the comic book, which would ideally lead to distribution and funding for the rest of the series.  The larger aim of this project is to tell a gripping story that also uses Latin American folklore as a way to bridge communities in the United States. Versions of the Cucuy story has been told for eons from generation to generation, with variations depending on the region. But this story will be something that has modern resonance, with twists and turns, along with a coming of age story and one of mourning and renewal that everyone can relate to. And before that sounds too lofty, it will be fun, too.

In addition to working with a talented artist in creating volume 1, we're excited to bring aboard storyteller/mystery writer/folklore consultant Patricia Santos Marcantonio to guide the story. More on the team below.

Our aim is work with other collaborators for future volumes of the comic as we seek to gain wider distribution after the initial volume is published.  Please watch the video here for more details.

TEAM

For Curse of El Cucuy, vol. 1, the creators and consultant are:

The Writer/Producer

Originally from Southern California, Craig Phillips is a Bay Area writer, screenwriter, editor and cartoonist who has an MFA in creative writing from California College of the Arts (CCA) and BA in film from SFSU. He's optioned several award-winning screenplays, including to filmmaker Charles Burnett, written for Variety, and is a web producer for Independent Lens on PBS.

The Artist

Turner Avery Mark-Jacobs
Turner Avery Mark-Jacobs

Artist and illustrator Turner Mark-Jacobs has a BFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He moved to New York City after graduating from the Art Institute, and lived there until 2009, whilst doing freelance work for museums and galleries, and mostly doing nothing of note in his studio. In 2010 he relocated to the Santa Fe, NM area where he has been working as a commercial illustrator and comic book artist and writer. His clients have included local businesses and museums such as the Los Alamos Historical Society, New Mexico History Museum, the Palace of the Governors museum, and The Santa Fe Reporter weekly newspaper. Mark-Jacobs’ painterly, sculptural style draws from influences that run the gamut from Belgian style ‘ligne-claire’ comics, to Mad Magazine, to Mike Mignola, to old master paintings, to Disney animation, to golden-age American illustration.

Consultant

Patricia Santos Marcantonio is an award-winning writer of mystery novels (Felicity Carrol and the Perilous Pursuit), children's books (Red Ridin’ in the Hood and Other Cuentos; Farrar, Straus and Giroux, which won an Anne Izard Storyteller’s Choice Award), wrote The Weeping Woman, co-authored Voices From the Snake River Plain, and has written several award-winning screenplays.

Risks and challenges

Without backing this project won't be able to follow through in paying the artist and story consultant (as well as writer), or printing.
Another risk/reward already mentioned here is making sure I stay both true to the characters and story while also being mindful of the origins of the story and wary of cultural appropriation. Having someone like Patricia and the rest of my feedback "loop" will help with this as well.
Lastly, we'll need to crank on this whenever we take breaks from our day jobs, which are also important and rewarding--but supportive. But we can get it done.
