About this project
“We felt marginalised by the surfing community because we were Christians and marginalised from the church community because we were surfers.”
And so I wrote explaining why myself and a handful of teenagers in Cronulla, Sydney, Australia decided to launch Christian Surfers in 1977. Now with missions in over 30 nations, comprising over 1000 volunteer leaders spreading the love of God through all levels of surfing, it's a great story. And that story is finally being told in Groundswell.
We’re seeking to release Groundswell as both an autobiographical account in paperback as well as a sick coffee table photo book. There are hundreds of stories and photos of ordinary people in their ordinary circumstances trusting God for the extraordinary:
- There is the account of Kiwi surfer Marc Dyer struggling with a heart condition who pioneers what became New Zealand’s largest surf event, the Jesus Easter Surf Classic
- Dyslexic musician and ADD surfer Roy Harley steps out in faith full-time with Son Surf in South Africa
- 45-year-old non-surfing crime analyst Jerry Dow from Santa Barbara, California wonders how he can do anything to help the surfers he keeps meeting in his line of work
- Former military policeman Dario Fraga learns to surf to reach the lost souls on his beach in Brazil
There are endless accounts from these surfers of faith, mishaps and crazy fun in Jesus name.
The story is written, the photos have been laid out by a leading graphic designer who was formerly art director of a major Australian surf magazine. All that’s left now is to Kickstarter it all the way to the printers!
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO DO THIS!
We are halfway there financially, having invested $25,000 to set it up, and now need to secure $20,000 to get it printing. Here are some snapshots of people who have already had a sneak read…
“Through Christian Surfers, God has empowered many people to connect the dots between their passion for Jesus and passion for surfing. Groundswell inspiringly tells this story.”
Damien Hobgood, Professional Surfer, Florida, USA
“This powerful, honest and often humorous book weaves together the story of Christians Surfers alongside the values that underpin its work today. It is proof that the gospel works, that God is good and that if God can use surfers, then he can use anyone!”
Andy Frost, Director, Share Jesus International, UK
“Groundswell was so easy to relate to as a surfer and has inspired me to step up more with Christian Surfers locally.”
Rachel Campbell, 19-year-old Professional Women’s Surfer, Australia
“Reading through Groundswell, I was reminded of how much God desires to work through anyone who is simply willing to step out in faith.”
Bryan Jennings, Founder, Walking on Water, USA
“Surfing and Jesus go together after all! Reading Groundswell will have your faith enlarged and you heart ignited.”
Alan Vink, Convener, Willow Creek Association, New Zealand
“Given the unimpeachable work of CS with surf chaplaincy, I find it unsurprising to see the respect that it enjoys at all levels of our sport. This book opens up the story behind this reputation.”
Richard Grellman, Chairman, Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP)
“In Groundswell, Christian Surfers has given all of us a tremendous example of what it means to be true to who you are and to follow Jesus with passion and purpose.”
Mitch Anderson, National Director, Youth With a Mission, Chile
“My Christian story began when I attended a CS camp and found Jesus. Groundswell confirms that the story is still on the move, impacting young guys (and girls!) on beaches everywhere.”
Terran Williams, Pastor, Common Ground Church, Cape Town, South Africa
So if all these good people loved it, I am sure you will too!
More importantly, I hope that you are inspired after reading this NOT with the thought, “Great story but it could never be me.” But rather you will read and think, “Great story, that could be me!”
Thanks, and all cred to Jesus who is the true groundswell behind this book…
Founder and Director, Christian Surfers International
