The Shadowball experience
Shadowball’s high-intensity workout is intended to increase cardiovascular fitness, strength, muscular endurance, agility, and striking accuracy.
The Shadowball, in one intuitive process brings multiple layers of physical and cerebral conditioning. It simultaneously trains the athlete to be accurate, fast, agile, quick to adapt, improvise angle of attack, while executing situation-required footwork – all, while looking like a BOSS!
Unlike conventional punching bag designs, the Shadowball does not have complex and costly installation requirements. The Shadowball was specifically designed to be punched, and bounced against a wall. It’s compact, portable and requires zero installation. It can be used indoors, outdoors…it can be used anytime, anyplace, and anywhere there is a wall.
Once you’ve removed the installation requirements, you’ve basically taken the punching bag out of the confines of the gym and into your basement, your backyard, your school, your local park and playground - basically, anywhere there is a wall – and we think that’s pretty amazing, but more than that, more than portability and convenience, the part where the Shadowball truly shines is in its ability to provide intuitive training routines that encourage novices and seasoned athletes alike, to gain both agility and accuracy as they master the skills required to keep the Shadowball in play.

The Shadowball is the first punching bag with R.T.H.M. (pronounced rhythm) for Random Target Hyper-kinetic Motion.
You never really know what your next punch will be - yup, just like a real fight!
Due to limited variation in their movement, athletes training with any of of the conventional punching bags invariably experience particularly monotonous exercise sessions within only a few minutes of use. Here, a parallel to running on a treadmill may be made, with such experiences being viewed as not particularly engaging, lacking stimulation, or considered altogether boring for many athletes. Such lack of engagement often directly mars the enjoyment of the training routine often with repercussions on the perceived sense of achievement as well as the objective success of the athlete.
We need you!
working very hard, spending a good part of the year perfecting the
Shadowball, making certain that it has that optimal weight, rebound speed and
density for a flawless and versatile performance.
We’ve teamed up with a reputable and experienced manufacturer that will manufacture the Shadowball to our high standard of craftsmanship, performance and durability. Everything is in place - all we are missing is you and your support. We’ve set up our funding goal that would allow us to get that first production run out the door and into your hands.
As you know, funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing affair — our project must reach its funding goal of $40,000 or it gets nothing.
We’ve put together a great collection of rewards for your support, please help us reach our goal by backing us and by spreading the word about Shadowball via emails, posts tweets and pins. Thank you.
Everybody was Kung Fu fighting…
With the growing popularity of MMA and the rejuvenated sport of boxing in conjunction with the population’s growing fitness awareness, many have turned to various fight based fitness activities like, Boxing, Kick boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, Karate, Kravmaga, MMA etc.
As in almost anything, having the right tools can make the difference between success and failure. While shadow boxing, katas and drills, provide structured basic training for boxing or martial arts form, and movement - this exercise alone is incomplete, as it does not allow the individual to experience the force of impact when they strike.
Enter - the punching bags. Punching bags allow the athlete to strike at full speed and power - getting accustomed to the impact that one feels upon successfully making contact with a target. This is why punching bags are essential training tools for fighters. Using punching bags allows the athlete to execute punches and kicks at full force.
An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come. – Victor Hugo
The spark of an idea:
The inspiration for the Shadowball came in two stages: As a loudspeaker designer, I've always been both fascinated and challenged by how sound behaves when it bounces off boundaries - like walls. One Sunday, helping out in the nursery at my church, I got my mind wondering about sound and acoustics. Trying to visualize how sound may reflect off a wall at various angles, I started bouncing this three inch foam ball against the wall. I then started slapping it to and fro, and then started punching it, and before I knew it I’d forgotten about my little acoustical experiment and I was just having fun. It was challenging because it's too small a target, too light, and doesn't really bounce all that well, but nevertheless, ten minutes into it, I was drenched in sweat, having a really fun time, and getting a cardio workout - and then it hit me – If only I had a better ball. So I immediately went to work, and within a week I had a prototype that was about 75% complete. The size was about right, weight and density was ok, but I needed to do more research on the physics of bounce (COR). I set it aside, I got pulled over to other interests and ideas, and many years passed. That was the first round of inspiration.
The second round of inspiration came much later - years later, in the form of boxing superstar Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao – yes, I’m a big fan. Manny being an extremely gifted boxer has this very unique ability to hit his opponents from angles no one expects - he's just that way - that's what he's known for. Every commentator of every single one of his fights - never forgot to comment and marvel at this incredible ability that Manny has. His angles of attack come unexpectedly and often, devastating to his opponents. You can normally tell the angle a fighter will be taking by his hips, but unlike Shakira, Manny’s hips DO lie. Then I remembered my old Shadowball project and thought, hey if there is anything that could help a fighter develop good angles - to hit a moving target at unpredictable angles, it would be the Shadowball – while it may not turn you into a Manny Pacquiao, it would most definitely help you develop your punching angles. The current punching bag designs will not do it - the speed bag, double-ended bag and the heavy bag - their movements are just too limited and predictable. So I went back to the drawing board and continued where I left off. The result is a ball specifically designed with the optimum weight, density and spring characteristics that are optimized for punching and bouncing against a wall. So that’s how I invented the Shadowball – true story.
The Status Quo
While there are variations in shape, size and ways of installation, there are basically three types of punching bag in use today by the boxing and martial arts athlete: the Speed ball, Double-ended ball, and the Heavy bag. These ball/bag designs have been used in the boxing and martial arts world for many years, but these designs are not without weakness and limitations.
The United States Office of Patents and Trademarks awarded a patent for the punching bag (heavy bag) to Simon D. Kehoe in 1872.Problem 1, Installation complexity: These popular "punching bag" designs all have considerable installation requirements.

Risks and challenges
Manufacturing something for the first time will always come with surprises that normally follow the words, "oh buy the way..." It's those "buy the ways" that normally create headaches in any projects, but we have taken the time to research and anticipate possible surprises... but that's what's funny about surprises - you always never expect them :-)
Another challenge ahead is the process of getting traction for a completely new type of exercise. Often it takes time for people to embrace a new approach. This is normal with anything truly new and innovative, but we're not that worried. The benefits of the Shadowball are just too obvious.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
