The biggest challenge in making Hauntings of the Heart a reality is getting initial funding in place. If we can meet (and hopefully exceed) our initial funding goal of $50,000, it will give us the flexibility necessary to move forward with pre-production.
I have drafted a detailed budget that would allow us to make the film for the minimum $50,000:
Art Department&Props: $1,000
Transportation & Meals: $4,000
Camera & Sound Equipment Costs: $20,000
When the film is completed, we would then hold another Kickstarter campaign to cover post-production costs, including editing and polishing the film into a quality product to be submitted to distribution companies.
Please keep in mind, the $50,000 budget I have drafted is the bare minimum needed to make Hauntings of the Heart possible. Costume dramas are expensive because the world in which they exist in is the past and must be carefully recreated through costumes, locations, and set design. Most big budget studio costume dramas cost millions to make, such as Sherlock Holmes(2009), which cost a whopping $90 million. Take a look at some of the budgets of costume dramas similar to "Hauntings of the Heart" for comparison: Pride and Prejudice (2004) cost $28 million. Becoming Jane(2005) cost $16.5 million. Dorian Gray(2009) cost 17.5 million. Bel Ami (2012) cost $11.8 million. Bright Star (2009) cost $8.5 million. Studio costume dramas cost so much because of factors such as: wages and fees for cast &crew members, attaching name talent, building sets from scratch, studio fees, union fees, craft service, hiring costume designers and composers, and more. Based on the budget I have carefully and meticulously drafted, these factors are just some of the things we have cut or downsized in order to keep the Kickstarter campaign budget at a feasible $50,000. While I am confident the $50,000 budget will be enough to make Hauntings of the Heart a decent quality film product, exceeding our goal would give us the flexibility to add to our overall budget as well as the opportunity to consider:
- better locations & set design
-higher quality film and sound equipment
-hiring a Costume Designer
-attaching "Name" talent
-compensation for Cast & Crew members
Thus, the MORE funding we can get, the BETTER film we can make for our audience and for you, our generous backers! We can't make this film without your help! So please spread the word about the campaign, and contribute whatever you can! Help us take Hauntings of the Heart from script to the silver screen!
Risks and challenges
The biggest obstacle in making this film is definitely raising the funds necessary to make it a reality. I am confident that "Hauntings of the Heart" is a film that is relevant and marketable, and has the potential for widespread and perhaps even theatrical distribution. But films, particularly costume dramas, are very expensive, and I want to create the best possible quality film product for our audience, which is why I need your help and financial support to help kickstart our project. If any unexpected setbacks occur in the pre-production, production, or post-production process of this film, I am confident that the alternative plans I have in place will keep the filmmaking process going smoothly, and that I also have the background and experience to overcome any obstacles in taking this film from script to screen. I have the experience and knowledge necessary to tackle the creative and technical aspects of making this project happen, as well as access to industry resources and contacts. If I can meet (and hopefully surpass) the initial finding goal of $50,000, it will give the project the flexibility necessary to move forward with pre-production. I have several production plans in place, and if I can raise our goal it would give us the opportunity to pursue several routes in making this film happen (for example, one option we are considering is consulting with an established production company with a profound understanding of the U.S. production and financing market to help us plan and oversee physical production and post-production, including distribution.) I am 100% dedicated and determined to completing this film and making is available for widespread release, and raising the initial goal of $50,000 would also provide the option and the flexibility to move forward with producing the project independently. But I need your help to make this film happen, and I really hope you will help make this project a reality. So please if you can, make a contribution, spread the word!
