San Francisco tailor starts her own clothing label designing adorable vintage inspired fashion using fabrics from around the world.
Welcome to my Crowned Bird Kickstarter
Big thanks to the Kickstarter community!! We are seeking funding for my newly launched clothing label Crowned Bird. It is a tailor made, women's apparel brand that celebrates whimsical silhouettes, trans-seasonal wearability, ubiquitous collars, childlike playfulness, vintage florals, and kookie animal prints! All of the inspirations are taken from novel adventures through a 1960s childrens book. This is our big chance to make our mark in a growing industry. Dream it Big!
There is plenty of work behind the scenes when creating beautiful imagery for a clothing line. Hair stylists, make-up artists, photographers, art directors, and friends. Those people that help fill the gap when you fully realize you just can't do alone. We are so grateful. Right now my team has spent that past 5 months patterning, grading, and producing the sample collection used for our website. We need your help to produce a full size run for wholesalers. Your contributions will help Crowned Bird with all necessary start up costs including costs of manufacturing, a summer trade show, our Fall 2012 Lookbook, and the absolute potential to expand this local studio facility into a co-creative production house! Our ultimate goal in the future is to be able to offer local garment making services for designers dreaming to produce their own collection. "It is not about competition, it is about the community."
You might ask why $8,600? It is a pretty exact number when calculating funds needed for the launch. The Los Angeles trade show we are attending (visualizing) is $3,500 for a booth and travel + $2,800 costs of manufacturing a full size run, not including extra sizing going towards rewards :) + hiring a strong international sales rep to build the business + transforming our studio into a fully functional production facility. The funding seems to go quite quickly, but the result is profound. Crowned Bird Kickstarter will be allow us to gain exposure in the wholesale market, crucial for sales and growth.
So maybe Crowned Bird may seem like it popped up out of nowhere. Yet it's a label in the making for some time. The label is about about taking flight in regards to destiny. A little about me as a designer....From Austin to San Francisco and back to Austin. The story comes full circle. During my 7 years away, I studied fine arts at the Art Institute of San Francisco, received a scholarship for an intensive two year degree at FIDM, and is best known as the right hand to Al's Attire, with an extremely fortunate position as a custom tailor in North Beach. Talent and perseverance is in the blood, as well as inherent ability to produce beautiful clothes (my grandmother was a seamstress for Miss America in the 80's). Designing anything from elaborate wedding gowns to Burning Man costumes, indie rocker mod suits, to creating custom designs for legends like Carlos Santana and Tom Waits. In this fortunate experience, I learned a few things. I understand that clothing is a form of expression and that in that expression there is an energy. That energy has a destination. This is how I want Crowned Bird to be understood by its wearer. As though that design was made for you, that you were destined to wear it. To own it.
My background in dressing the others has taken on a personality of its own. This label is about taking those details of the past, and pushing into forward into a well-rounded collection, every time. Since we are strongly motivated by what people are looking for and just can't find, Crowned Bird eliminates that struggle for transforming vintage into modern and gives room for more creative styling. It is a collection that can be trans-seasonal and worn throughout the year. Mixing up colors and prints with what you already own, they are pieces you have in the front of the closet. Anchors.
A little more about the label...from classic French retro to quirky animal prints, founder Priscilla Barroso designed a brand that illustrates her mindful avenue of perennial desire. Fathomable. Amused with generous personality. "Where time and eclecticism depart toward the nearest cosmic destination." Boldly captivating and easy to wear, these versatile staples provide building blocks for each new season. Crowned Bird has a method of crafting designs using intermingling textures, original prints, and timeless silhouettes that strongly capture the nature of the brand. It is the past that relates to us on an empathic level. A meaningful expression within one era, injects potent fervor by the other. In other words, it's clothing that keeps a little Grandma in mind. Thoughtfully made in the USA.
A flight to freedom. This is our running start. Thank you for being a part of this journey. It really does mean the world to not only myself, but all the 'makers' involved.
