Hexaclad and WMF are not ripping us off. During the campaign a backer also mentioned Hexaclad. This is how I reacted:
As mentioned on our project page, we’ve combined the best innovations into our ultimate frying pan. We did this together with a top manufacturer, our ‘pan whisperer’. That’s how we create chef-grade cookware for a fair price.
The honeycomb framework is an upcoming innovation. We’ve used the honeycomb framework, developed by our pan whisperer, in our Blackbeard.
It seems Hexaclad and WMF have used a similar technique when designing their frying pan. On their website, they describe two layers of stainless steel and also an aluminum core inside. However, there are two differences.
Hexaclad ensures lifetime warranty. We decided to offer you 5 years warranty. Why? The honeycomb technique is new and it has never been tested for lifetime usage. We strongly believe that the Blackbeard will be your kitchen companion much longer than 5 years. However, we’re still dealing with materials: we want to be sure about what we are promising.
The other big difference I see is pricing. WMF and Hexaclad’s pans are much more expensive than our Blackbeards. I can and will only speak for ourselves: the materials we’ve used don’t compromise on quality. We’ve tested our pans intensively with our community and Michelin star chefs, and they agreed with us.
Because we are kick-starting directly with our pan whisperer, we can offer our pans for a fair price. We are transparent about the fee Crowd Cookware is taking on the project page. This fee will be used for a next cookware hack.
