Hi Kickstarter! We are a startup from Iceland that makes food products using edible insects. Since June 2014, we've been developing an protein bar where the main source of protein is derived from sustainably farmed crickets. Today we are ready to launch Jungle Bar, the insect powered protein bar and are happy and excited to do so on Kickstarter.
Jungle Bar
Jungle Bar is a protein bar made with dates, seeds, chocolate and cricket flour, the main protein and mineral source of our bar. Jungle Bar and is the perfect treat to eat between, before or after whatever you keep yourself busy with doing during the day. The first prototypes of Jungle Bar have tasted amazing, but creating a delicious and eco-friendly food product has been our priority from the start.
We use cricket flour in Jungle Bar, an ingredient made out of crickets (chirp chirp) that have been dried and ground down to fine flour, ready to be mixed with the other ingredients in order to make a delicious and nutritious protein bar.
Jungle Bar is dedicated to those who share our passion for normalizing edible insects in the western world. We see it as our missions, to educate people about the benefits of edible insects and think that Jungle Bar is the perfect gateway food that's able to change people's minds towards eating insects.
Main Ingredients
The main ingredients of Jungle Bar are dates, sesame, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, chocolate and cricket flour. The bar is 50 grams (1,7 OZ), 200 calories, contains 8 grams of high quality protein (16% of the bar) and has a shelf life of 1 year.
Jungle Bar is a great source of sustainably sourced protein and iron. It's an excellent source of fiber and contains very low sodium. But that's not all, because Jungle Bar is free from soy, dairy, gluten and peanuts, which is so amazing, that we decided to hand draw these 'free from icons' you can see below to make it more visible!
What does Jungle Bar taste like?
April 17th we received the first prototypes of Jungle bar, from our producer.
We opened up a bar had a taste for ourselves but then we decided to document this special occasion and have a few university students taste Jungle Bar without telling them about the fact that it just happens to be insect infused. Check out their reactions.
Why Eat Insects?
Well, more than 1/3 of the world's population already does! So, how come we in the Western part of the world aren't also eating them?
After all, insects are an excellent source of protein, good fats, minerals and vitamins. In fact, they give us exactly what we want in a healthy and nutritious lifestyle, that's why we use edible insects in Jungle Bar. It's a great alternative to other protein rich foods, and much more sustainable!
Producing protein takes up a lot of resources; land, water and feed. Sourcing protein from insects such as crickets is much more sustainable than deriving it from other animals. Let's take cows and chickens as examples:
These shocking facts are brought to you by the FAO of the United nations. They pushed us harder to make Jungle Bar a reality and today everything has been set up and is ready. We have a producer ready to make a delicious recipe of Jungle Bar and we've attracted hundreds of people excited in eating our products. All that we need today is money to fund the production. That's why we need your help, Obi Wa.. Kickstarter!
The story
Before Crowbar Protein and Jungle Bar came to be, Búi, a product designer, experimented with farming insects and creating concept foods out of them. Last year, Búi‘s Fly Factory grabbed the attention of the media around the world. Wired, Gizmodo, Dezeen, Daily Mail were few of the big ones that wrote about Búi‘s extraordinary concept.
During Búi's 15 minutes of fame, he realized that there was a need for creating an insect infused, commercial food product, that people would actually want to eat! And that is when he recruited his old friend, Stefán, to the project. Together they founded Crowbar Protein and set their focus on normalizing edible insects in the western world.
Búi and Stefán's shared passion for exotic foods and living eco-friendly lifestyles which drove them in further experimentation with edible insects and soon after, they made the first prototypes for Jungle Bar.
Last summer, Crowbar Protein applied for a business accelerator program in Iceland, Startup Reykjavik, and started to pitch the idea of producing an insect based protein bar, to the people of Iceland. Sometimes a hard sell, because of the lack of insects in the food culture, but also because there are hardly any insects around in cold, old Iceland! However, the local media quickly picked up our story which drew the attention of the BBC.
This unexpected attention from the British media giant quickly made us viral around the world (again) for a few days, attracting hundreds of emails and requests from excited fans. Crowbar Protein continued perfecting its prototypes and creating a brand for Jungle Bar getting help from local experts and geniuses in their fields; Hinrik Carl Ellertson, chef, Guðbjörg Tómasdóttir, graphic designer, Rán Flygenring, illustrator, Axel Sigurðarson, photographer and Sverrir Norland, writer.
After months of experimentation, presentations, sampling sessions and 100% focus on creating a great product, Crowbar Protein is finally ready with Jungle Bar. Now it's up to you guys, to give Jungle Bar the green light, or not. Is the world ready for an insect powered protein bar?
Risques et défis
Preparations for production are well under way so backers won't have to wait long for their rewards. We simplified the rewards to ensure a fast delivery. So when we have reached our funding goal we'll get straight to full scale production of our Jungle Bars and shipping.
This is our timeline:
* April: Production of a small prototype batch no.1
* April: Kickstarter campaign begins
* April: Tasting and adjustments to the recipe, if needed
* May: Kickstarter campaign ends
* May: Production of a small prototype batch no. 2
* June: Jungle Bar is ready for final production
* July: Full production of the first Jungle Bar batch
* August: Shipment of rewards to Kickstarter pledgers.
