A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Crossboarder Caster Board - a mix between a Ripstik, Skateboard and a Balance board!
The idea with this product is to be able to use the Crossboarder in several ways. For instance to balance on it, sit on it, transport things on it, skate with it. You can skate with your feet in many different positions, like using the hoverboard position for example. With Crossboarder the limits are less and it is up to you and your imagination what to do with Crossboarder. Notice though that the orange mark has to be the front!
Crossboarder is for everyone, from the wide range of pro skaters to the non-skaters like me. Though I was raised on ice skates and therefore might have had some balance advantage I have hardly ever stood on a skateboard, at least not since I was 12 or so.
"Crossboarding" is really a lot of fun and could be used as a training tool for balance and agility. We see this turning into a useful product for kids and youth as well as for their parents! This can be seen as our contribution against today's struggle getting the kids off the screen, and also a nudge for the youth and adults to get activated together.
Design, Dimensions & Material:
The shape is symmetric and will measure around 25 inches from side to side. The planned base material is polypropylene which makes it lightweight, durable & flexible.
The placement of the wheels, along with the approx. 30 degree angle between the board and wheels mounting, make the board carve smoothly with an "automatic" forward motion when applying body movement. The surf feeling instantly is there and it is quite easy too. The 4 caster wheels along with the their placement results in both stability and speed.
However, as the final product is going to be in polypropylene we expect to get the board quite flexible giving an even better compliance. This means neither the dimensions of the prototype, or CAD model, are shown with definite relative measures or shapes.
To get started:
I (David Berg) am regularly in contact with Catsson International Group Ltd in Hong Kong, China. They work as a link between companies in Europe and factories in China. One of their managers Niklas Tullbrink and I are old co-workers, we have also done some business in an earlier matter. I have sent them all the information that I have so far on this project (yes, we trust them). They have evaluated materials and designs for estimating the costs in order to develop this product and produce approximately 100 units. Now I am asking your help in order to get this going into production. With Kickstarter I seek financial muscles for those 100 units including additional costs like shipment and taxes. I am hopeful this is doable and of course I´m very exited!
When trying out the home made prototype something occurred, I got the hang of it really fast. I understood its potential and soon got a feeling this was something I wanted to take to the next level, where I found this project suited for Kickstarter. (Sure, the video is a bit unprofessional... But we hope one can see it for what it is and what we are trying to communicate with it. We assure you we will make an awesome one when we have the actual product!)
With the prototype out there on the streets we got so much attention from kids where ever we went (around our neighborhood, school area...) asking curious questions and eager to try it out. Trust me, this kind of "fidget spinner" designed board will draw some attention!
I can really imagine how cool it will be using this product when it´s made out of a lighter and more resilient material (polypropylene) & running with proper caster wheels with bearings, making it run a lot more flexible and smooth. The angle and placement of the wheels also prevent the board from moving backwards, meaning you can stand still in an uphill slope with the board parallel to the direction of the path.
To sum it up: This is a mix between a balance board, a skateboard and a ripstik...
We call it the Crossboarder!
No, the product doesn’t have a patent. However, there exists something called an unregistered protection. These emerge when a design (who fulfills the criteria, i.e. you have to be first with your design…) turns available to the public, especially within the branch of industry. But from what I understand it has to spread and gain a documented foothold.
So to summarize; if Crossboarder Caster Board reaches out in media we could have it covered.
Within the European Union this type of protection is over a span of 3 years. If one wants this to last for a longer period of time one may seek a design protection within 1 year after the design went public.
If you are interested and have a will/feeling you can help/contribute to this project coming true I´m looking forward to hear from you! I´m eager to hear about your ideas, everything from product design to launching and distribution tips. Let´s do this together, sure it´s gonna be a lot of work but really fun to!

Risks and challenges
In any day, anything can happen... With that being said, I don´t see that their are any major risks with this project. If we reach our goal we will work as much as it takes to get the final product out on the market. However, there will be a challenge to reach out there letting people know we exist along with finding retailers. I sure hope we all have the common interest in working towards that! Please don´t hesitate if you are interested in this project, have an idea, or in any way think you can contribute. I´m sure we can come up with a good and healthy partnership for both sides. /Thanks
The board itself (deck) is gonna be made out of Polypropylene. The material is recyclable and has the number "5" as its resin identification code.
Reusability and recyclability
As the board is made to last for a very long period of time we expect users to replace parts (wheels) in order to extend the product life cycle.
Environmentally friendly factories
We are continuously in contact with Catsson International Group Ltd in Hong Kong. They have a lot of experience in this matter and they insure that corporations only take place with factories that fulfill a certain criteria. For example when it comes to environment in factories, child labor controls, packaging, quality controls and so on. If a factory doesn't meet up with these standards the deal with them is off.
Sustainable fulfillment and distribution
We will do our best to make sure the impact is as low as possible. Of course having Crossboarder manufactured in China might sound as a contradiction, it is not necessary so in this case. China has become the "fabric of the world", resulting in a positive economic growth for the people of China. A very large part of the inhabitants in China is very poor living under very tough conditions, but it has decreased severely in the last decades. The economic growth is good in many ways of course, not least in an democratic way. Finally we intend to arrange orders so we minimize the numbers of shipping occasions.
