About this project
Mr. Potato Head Meets iPhone Skins
CritterKins Octo-Packs include EIGHT multi-colored self-adhesive skins plus multiple sticker sheets of die-cut facial features (e.g. eyes, mouths, teeth, fangs, mustaches, horns, etc.) that you assemble into crazy characters. Tall. Squat. Cyclops. Triclops. Hipster. Nerd... whatever blows your hair back.
We Want Happy Fingers
Originally we just wanted to create a line of critters. But we had so much fun creating them that we couldn't decide which to produce! Then we had our "AH-HA!" moment. We want all of you to share in the funfest of making your very own critters. Check out how easy they are to make!
Touch the Rainbow
Each pack of CritterKins is a multi-colored riot of fun.
Looking Good, Billy Ray.
Feeling Good, Lewis
CritterKins feel as great as they look because they're made of high-quality recycled card stock in vibrant colors that produce wonderful feeling skins. Makes for a pleasant contrast to the coldly industrial sleekness of the iPhone.
“Paper? Does that even last?” YES!!!
Most of our beta testers hold on to theirs for six weeks and longer.
Daily use causes your CritterKin to acquire a nice nap and uniquely mottled appearance. Like fine wine or your favorite pair of jeans, CritterKins get better with age.
When you decide to send your buddy to the recycle bin from whence it came, and once your grieving period is finally over, take heart that your pack of CritterKins gives you multiple chances to make new friends! So get back out there and mend that broken heart with a new Critter!
A CritterKin In Every Pocket
We’ve been working hard to make CritterKins an awesome product. With your help it certainly will be. Our 12-month prototyping and testing phase is coming to a close and we are ready to take it to the next level.
This is where you come in. We need your help to get CritterKins into pockets and purses around this great big world of ours. We are looking for people that like to have fun and are willing to part with a small amount of cash for the privilege. Your support will help us cover the costs of our first production run of CritterKins for iPhone 4, 4S and 5.
USA! USA! USA!
The Critter Central Office is located in sunny Philadelphia - the birthplace of liberty, the cheesesteak, the most awesome sports mascot in recorded history, and now (with your help) CritterKins. All manufacturing and packaging will be done by operations in the USA.
El Team-o Supreme-o
CritterKins are a labor of love for Angel & Mike (a.k.a. El Chuchador & Bit Bot). We just want to make the world a sillier place to live in. Nothing would please us more than having our secret identities exposed by an amateur reporter using a camera adorned with a goofy looking critter face. Please help us make that happen.
Risks and challenges
At the end of the day, we are proposing production of stickers. Not the most technically challenging thing in the world. The sticker industry, though, is typically geared toward low volumes/high cost or high volumes/low cost. There aren't a lot of folks who can do quality and quantity. Furthermore, many smaller shops still only use vinyl! We draw the line there. Finally, we are determined to keep production here in the USA, making direct-to consumer quantities, at costs that allow everyone to earn a living, while giving customers a great deal.
All of the above decreased our vendor options dramatically, but it helped to focus our efforts on ones that can help us complete this project, and help us grow, through quality and value.
Luckily, Michael was the Director of Brand Development at Con-Tact, the global self-adhesive decorative product manufacturer. He has extensive, deep relationships with various print houses and label makers around the United States. He also has considerable expertise in the area of adhesives, substrates, printing and die-cutting technologies. He and Angel have narrowed the selection options to five vendors, the final selection of which will depend on the relative success of our Kickstarter Campaign.
With respect to a web presence and direct-to-consumer sales, Angel has extensive experience building web applications. The design and workflow of the web site are already well underway. We fully expect to have a working storefront within a month of funding.
Given our backgrounds, pre-existing relationship with production vendors, and the tremendous amount of product development that happened prior to this campaign getting started, we feel that the risks are low for funding this project.
