GeneFunk 2090 is a biopunk/cyberpunk RPG and setting made using the D&D 5E Open Gaming License. Players take on the role of elite mercenaries that specialize in investigation and violence. No magic or fantasy, but tons of cybernetics, genetic enhancements, nanobots, drones, hacking, androids, high tech guns and armor, and other amazing tech!
Cadre of Professionals. You and your allies are a cadre, a lean start-up corporation that specializes in investigation, intelligence, protection, and violence. To keep their hands clean, the syndicates often outsource this kind of work to smaller outfits, like yours. Your cadre's skillset is in high demand in this intrigue filled world, being sought after by megacorporations, nation-states, organized crime, or wealthy individuals. As an autonomous entity, your cadre of elite agents takes contracts as you see fit, navigating the shadows of corporate espionage and savagery with competence and panache. Discreet. Elite. Disposable.
Plasticity of Genes, Form, and Human Nature. Large sections of the human population have had their genes chosen before birth to breed success, while others have had foreign DNA included to produce wholly different physical traits that were once thought inhuman. On top of all the innate genetic tweaking, individuals modify themselves through cyberware surgeries and biohacks, to the point where some are considered entirely "posthuman".
Supercomputer in your Bloodstream. The human condition as a whole has become something somewhat different. Somewhere along the way almost every single human has been modified to have a powerful supercomputer coded directly into their DNA and physiology, one that has merged with their consciousness. In this world the internet has become as real as the physical world and hackers have become manipulators of the very stuff of the human psyche, probing and rearranging memory and mind the way a potter molds clay.
Violent, Shallow, and Unequal. Multinational corporations have gobbled each other up, producing ever larger entities until only nine remain, each of which is a superpower bigger than most of the world’s countries. Corporate executives have the power to shatter entire governments in the name of their company’s share value and their own ambition. Gangs and organized crime saturate every urban environment. This world, bloated from overpopulation and consumer greed, has become one of the most violent eras in human history. The rich segregate themselves from the poor, and the tension caused by this wealth gap is causing the world to burst at the seams.
Virtual Immortality. Recent innovations have allowed the rich to undergo a process that maps their entire nervous system, connectome, endocrine complement, DNA and gene expression, and every other feature relevant to the human mind. This digitization of consciousness allows the world's wealthy and powerful to essentially live forever, switching from one bioengineered shell to another as they see fit.
GeneFunk 2090 Core Rulebook
The full hardcover of the GeneFunk 2090 Core Rulebook will be printed on thick #80 paper in premium color, a full offset print run! Everything you need to run and play GeneFunk 2090 at a table. It will be around 224-260 pages, depending on how the layout develops!
The GeneFunk 2090 Core Rulebook PDF will be fully bookmarked, for easy navigation, and will work well with tablet users.
Both will be filled with lucious cyberpunk art, including full page spreads, with over 100 beautiful illustrations from William Liberto, Dean Spencer, Nate Artuz, Dimas Raviandra, Enmanuel Martinez Lema, and others! These artists really bring the biopunk world of GeneFunk to life!
The Busan Bamboozle - A Starter Investigation
This 20 page starter contract is set in the bustling port city of Busan, Korea. Busan is a hotbed of criminal activity, with four different major crime syndicates (North and South Jopok, Russian Bratva, and Yakuza) perpetually vying to expand their borders in a zero-sum game with their competition. Can your cadre navigate their way through the fierce criminal ecosystem and transgenic gangs to complete their contract, and raise their Mosaic score?
It will also contain beautiful, thematic, biopunk art throughout!
It is designed for level 3 characters, that takes from 1-3 sessions to complete, and ends with the characters being level 4.
GeneFunk 2090 Fillable Character Sheet
It's always nice to have a character sheet to match the setting, and who doesn't love the option of having it as a fillable form? It is two pages, with the back side containing area for known hacks.
The GeneFunk 2090 Core Rulebook will include mechanics for:

- 10,000 - GM SCREEN (PDF). ***UNLOCKED*** A nice handy dandy GM screen, summarizing all of the regularly used rules on an 8-panel PDF with art, in both portrait and landscape orientation.
- 12,500 - OFFSET PRINT RUN. ***UNLOCKED*** The quality of the printed books will get even BETTER once we get here, as I could afford to do an offset print run through PrintNinja. This may affect the shipping costs for backers not from Canada, UK, or USA.
- 17,500 - ROLL20 TOKENS + SHEET. ***UNLOCKED*** Digital top-down graphical tokens will be created for all of the classes and some of the NPCs, at least 20 in total, possibly more! They will be in PNG format. A Roll20 character sheet will also be created!

It will include dozens of major NPCs, fantastic art, plot hooks, details on the crime syndicates and major chaebol corporate powers, popular Korean genomes, and more! It will be a sandbox setting used as the basis for a GeneFunk 2090 campaign. It will be released as a PDF, with print on demand options through DriveThruRPG.
All backers will receive all stretch goal rewards! If we are more successful than we anticipate, and add physical products to stretch goals for $50K+, only backers at certain pledge levels might receive them.
Digital goods (such as PDFs) will be delivered through DriveThruRPG. I'll use Kickstarter's survey system to gather your email addresses! The PDF will be sent out as soon as it's done, so likely October! If you are interested in playtesting before then, we will start round 4 in June, and you can message me.
Physical book fulfillment delivered through BackerKit. I'll use Backerkit's survey system to gather your email addresses! We will be doing a full print run, and delivery will be handled by one of the many excellent suggestions from proven Kickstarter veterans, so I'm using the wisdom of those that have walked before me. :) I'll work on getting fullfillment services in Australia, Canada, UK, and USA. My estimated date of delivery (giving myself lots of leeway) is February 2020, but it may well be done before then!
Shipping costs will be collected separately. It's the only way to have completely accurate assessment of shipping costs! To reiterate, shipping costs are separate from your pledge. After the campaign ends, and the books are printed, you will receive an email that will take you to a store front where you can put in your address, and pay the correct shipping cost. Since we'll be shipping through DriveThruRPG, you can find an estimate of shipping costs here. If we achieve the $12,500 strech goal, we'll be shipping through fullfillment services, which might affect shipping costs in areas outside of Canada, UK, or USA.
I started on this project 18 years ago while in a Graphics Design program, and it may have even been an influence behind me steering my education towards molecular bio for my M.Sc, hahaha. :D I've had a lot of help along the way!
Killer artists like William Liberto, Dean Spencer, Nate Artuz, Dimas Raviandra, Enmanuel Martinez Lema, Trung Tin Shinji, Tony 'MrKrane' Carter, and Sonnaz are all a part of this creation.
Special thanks to Retrology, for use of their track "Time" in the promo video, the RPG design community, and all the playtesters!
I had a nice chat about GeneFunk 2090 with @GarmBreak1, from @midgardiaRPG! Watch it below if you are so inclined. :D
Risks and challenges
The setting and mechanics are already finished, so absolutely no risk in regards to the PDF! I'm a first time creator, but I'll be using DriveThruRPG for printing and delivery, which is about as stable as you can get! If we make the offset print run stretch goal, I'll be using PrintNinja, which has a reputation for excellent quality and reliability, so I feel confident about that. In the offset print run scenario, the shipping costs are certain to remain similar for USA, UK, and Canada, but other locations may be affected by higher shipping costs depending on if I can obtain a fulfillment service for smaller orders in those areas (the shipping cost may even go down if so).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
