Today we bring you our opening number. It’s also one of the first songs we wrote for the show, though the lyrics have changed a lot over the years. For example, the line “when I see those Rolling Hills/Sun is shining, it’s a thrill” has been changed to “Sun is shining, I got chills.” And we ditched a rhyming line “tell my folks I’ll write if they give me a stamp/got my friends all here for another summer at camp” in favor of a line that’s more true to our story - “I’ve waited 10 long months, school is out at last/got my friends all here for another summer at camp.”
We also added a middle section that includes the camp “alma mater”, which started out as a separate song. Every camp needs a song like that. In fact, if you were a camper, you probably remember all the words to the songs you used to sing there. We sure do.
We just struggled to find the right place for ours, until we decided to put it in the middle of “Rolling Hills.” Take a listen.
