Second Stretch Goal Announcement!!

Update: First Stretch Goal Funded and Second Stretch Goal Launched!

With our first stretch goal funded we’re delighted that we now have the funds in place to create the 3-hour-plus extended cut, sign up more talented contributors, and expand the scope of the documentary.

So, on to our second stretch goal, which will trigger once we’ve raised £90,000. We’re really excited about this one because we believe it will deliver something thought-provoking and timely that hasn’t been a big focus of other Horror documentaries…

Our headline feature for this stretch goal is an additional section to our documentary that will celebrate the Iconic Women of ‘80s Horror.

For this section, we’re going to be speaking to:

  • Barbara Crampton – Actress (Re-Animator, From Beyond)
  • Heather Wixson – Managing Editor at DailyDead.com
  • Adrienne Barbeau – Actress (The Fog, Swamp Thing)
  • Robbi Morgan – Actress (Friday the 13th)
  • Kelli Maroney – Actress (Chopping Mall, Night of the Comet)
  • Dee Wallace – Actress (The Howling, Cujo, Critters)
  • Lisa Wilcox – Actress (Nightmare on Elm Street 4)
  • Caroline Williams – Actress (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2)

Our objective is to celebrate women in horror and hear from them about their experiences, both good and bad, creating some of the most iconic characters in our favourite ‘80s horror movies.

This section will be in addition to the 3+ hours extended version we’ve already committed to, so you’ll hopefully be getting an even bigger and more complete documentary than before.

Additionally, this stretch goal will enable us to invest in multi-language subtitles, which has been a highly-requested feature. As part of the stretch goal we’re committed to Spanish and Italian subtitles and we’ll be looking at adding others as well. If you would like a particular language included please mention it to us in the comments; we’ll take this into consideration if we get an opportunity to add more languages.

Finally, we’ll be adding a Bonus Content section which will include user-generated content created for us by our network of Horror Influencers! What are you looking forward to most?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After an incredible first few days, we're super excited to have passed our initial funding goal - In Search of Darkness is going to get made!

But we don't want to stop there...

We were clear from the start that the target we were asking for was the minimum we needed to make this project happen, but we've always had a bigger vision; '80s horror is all about excess and we want our project to reflect that by being the definitive documentary of its kind.

The support we're receiving from the horror community shows you agree, and now we've passed our initial funding goal we can start to look at achieving that.

This means we're excited to announce our first stretch goal - £60,000.

Passing the £60,000 mark will allow us to offer:

  • 3-hour-plus extended cut - In addition to our theatrical cut (90+ minutes) we've mentioned our intention to release an extended cut before, and by supporting this project past the first stretch goal we'll have the resources necessary to push this past the 3-hour mark.
  • More interviews - We've already got some exciting names lined up that you'll be hearing about over the next couple of weeks - watch this space for major announcements!
  • Expanded scope - With extended running time and more resources for interviewing people, we'll be able to expand the scope to include topics that might have been hard to fit in such as VHS covers & Poster Art, 80s Horror soundtracks, Merchandise & collectables and '80s Horror retro computer games.

Finally, a big thank you if you have supported us in any way, either by backing our project or sharing on social media. Let's keep going!

For the first time in Horror history, “In Search of Darkness” will bring together ‘80s horror icons, modern horror greats, and popular horror influencers to create the most complete retrospective documentary of the genre ever made.

Together, they will bring their unique perspectives as we take a nostalgic journey back to revisit the unforgettable heroes, monsters, and movies that thrilled and chilled us.

IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS - ORIGINAL ARTWORK
IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS - ORIGINAL ARTWORK

The 1980’s exploded onto our screens in a veritable feast of blood, sweat, and chills. Madmen, killers, and evil spirits mingled with aliens, demons and cursed dolls; horrific images burnt directly onto our retinas and etched permanently into our brains. And we loved it.

Limited Edition Artwork by Legendary Horror Artist Graham Humphreys
Limited Edition Artwork by Legendary Horror Artist Graham Humphreys

Hearts pounding, palms sweaty, muscles tense; that thrill of creeping dread was matched only by the satisfaction of knowing the person in the next seat was even more terrified.

It showed us how to confront the times we live in through a skewed mirror – all twisted angles and razor edges; ideas and visions so sharp they could almost cut you, twisting our everyday fears and giving them a face.

This was a time when greed was good and our bodies were no longer our friend. Cronenberg, Yuzna, Carpenter, Craven – all gave us the chance to see the horror within society and within ourselves.

Hysteria over AIDS transplanted body horror from the hospital onto our screens, while “Gordon Gecko” levels of excess and fears over rising violent crime met their match in increasingly over-the-top Slasher flicks.

But this was a genre with more to offer than cheap scares, from Steven Miner’s comedy horror of ‘House’ to the daunting practical effects of Stuart Gordon’s ‘Re-Animator’ one of the defining characteristics of 1980’s horror cinema was its sheer range and imagination when it came to examining our mortality.

For the first time, technology became the tool through which these ghouls could invade our homes, staring out at us from eye-popping VHS tapes, ready to scare us again and again at the touch of a button.

For many of us, this was our only option. The 1980’s saw many new releases banned from our local rental stores amidst protests and public outcry – but that didn’t stop us from sharing copies; grainy 3rd generation bootlegs that lost none of their ability to scare.

Gloved killers stared out at us from cool t-shirts, Fangoria reviews kept us hooked, and entire weekends were spent chasing our next scare through the dusty aisles of the local mom-and-pop VHS rental store – the '80s gave us exactly what we craved.

Join us as we descend once again to explore how an industry that grew from the minds of outsiders, punks, and rebellious teenagers became a cultural leviathan that left the rest of society SCREAMING foul murder.

Turn the lights down, lock your doors, check behind your curtain and under your bed… We are going to see some old friends tonight.

We've seen a lot of horror documentaries - and loved them - but we’ve never seen anyone take on the greatest decade in modern horror quite like this before.

Firstly, we want to make a documentary that is dedicated just to the iconic horror movies made during the '80s. We love '80s Horror - not just the characters, the stories, and the personalities (as if that weren't enough), but also the artwork, the incredible practical special effects and the way these stories were a reflection of the era itself. This decade is more than deserving of its own documentary.

Secondly, we want to create a more complete documentary than those that have gone before by expanding the standard horror doc lineup beyond the '80s icons. We have immense admiration for the men and women who made these films, but the story doesn't end there, quite the opposite - that's just where the story began.

From there, '80s horror seeped its way into popular culture, having a profound influence on its fans and inspiring artwork, music & fashion. To get a better sense of its impact, we'll also be interviewing modern horror masters and popular horror influencers to get their unique takes on these movies and how they influenced the horror genre, the fans who watched them, and society itself.

Our horror influencers, many of whom run popular Horror YouTube channels or edit well-known horror sites, represent the perspective of fans. The modern horror creators offer another viewpoint, having been influenced by these '80s legends before going into the industry themselves. Together, these three viewpoints will enable us to deliver the definitive '80s horror documentary.

It would be easy (and tempting) to fill an entire documentary with our favourite scenes, but we want to go much deeper than that. Through our interviews with '80s masters, modern horror greats, and popular Horror commentators we want to explore a wide range of issues:

  • Learn about the era from the perspective of the masters who frightened us, the directors of today who were inspired by them, and the new generation of social media influencers who have fallen in love with the genre.
  • Hear from the actors, writers, directors, producers, and composers who brought horror icons such as Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers and Pinhead to the screen.
  • Delve into the imagery: the garish VHS covers and poster art that seduced us and came to define the '80s horror aesthetic.
  • Re-examine the socio/political context that inspired our favourite movies – fears of nuclear war, violent crime, and deadly diseases.
  • Explore the rise of the B-Movie superstars: Bruce Campbell, Jeffrey Combs, and Robert Englund; stars that could guarantee success for what was an otherwise overlooked sub-genre.
  • Investigate how the explosion of VHS enabled these icons of horror to take the leap from the movie screen into our homes and created new opportunities for low-budget filmmakers.
  • Examine the role of practical in-camera effects, animatronics, and prosthetics played in scaring us in a time before CGI.
  • Discuss the importance of the '80s horror genre and its impact on society, including how its violent and explicit imagery opened-up new political, sociological, and cultural discussion.

To accomplish this, we'll be producing both a standard-length documentary and an additional extended cut version, both of which will be made available to the backers who will receive the documentary.

Back us at the Pumpkinhead tier or above to receive the full documentary!

Production will start in January 2019, with post-production scheduled for March, April and May 2019. We will release the completed documentary in July 2019. We’ve already put dates in the diary for filming with many of our contributors and we’re confident we have a realistic timeline.

A huge array of fantastic contributors have put their faith in our vision by attaching their name to our project.

But now we need to put our faith in you, the Horror community because we need your help to see this project to completion. We've done the maths, and the goal we have on Kickstarter is the absolute minimum we need to make this happen.

Your contributions towards our project will go towards the costs of production, filming interviews, Kickstarter fees, post-production and the marketing necessary to create a high-quality documentary that does this era of Horror the justice it deserves.

Read on to see the fantastic lineup of contributors - we’re still adding to it!

We’ve already got some incredible contributors lined up and the list keeps on growing! Take a look at our lineup so far (in alphabetical order):

We have a full production team in place and the support of a 30-strong advisory team, who between them have decades of experience in and around the Horror industry.

It would be impractical to name everyone, but here are some of the key players:

  • Evrim Ersoy - Producer, Creative Director at Fantastic Fest
  • Ti Singh - Producer, Author & Founder of The Bristol Bad Film Club
  • David Weiner - Director, Filmmaker & Journalist (Former Editor of Famous Monsters Of Film Land)
  • Jim Kunz - Cinematographer, specializing in the horror genre
  • Heather Wixson - Advisor, Managing Editor of DailyDead.com
  • Scott Weinberg - Advisor, Film Writer/Journalist
  • Robin Block - Executive Producer, Founder/CEO at CreatorVC.com

Many of these individuals have already dedicated significant time to the project, and you can see some of the fruits of their labour in our stunning trailer, fantastic artwork, and the incredible list of contributors who have already attached their names to the project.

Of course, we don’t want to stop there! There’s plenty more work to do once we complete the funding phase and our team can’t wait!

We’ve partnered with the popular NewRetroWave record label to curate the official soundtrack. NewRetroWave is one of the leading voices in the emerging Retrowave scene, providing exposure to Retrowave artists who perfectly match the ‘80s aesthetic we’re celebrating.

Back us at the Brundlefly tier or above to receive the soundtrack!

We're confident that we will meet our shipping and delivery dates for all our rewards, but it is not unusual for productions to encounter small setbacks. We will keep all backers informed of our progress and give plenty of notice if we need to make a change.

You must be 18+ or accompanied by a ticket-wielding parent or guardian to attend the premiere. Kickstarter only allows you to pledge for one reward. If you would like to purchase multiples of a reward enter your total amount manually and send us a private message so we can make sure you get everything you want.

Still here? Great. If you made it this far you’ve read our vision, seen our awesome list of contributors, and viewed some of the incredible rewards we have on offer.

We’re creating this documentary for fans like you, and we hope you can become a part of making that happen by funding our project.

If you aren’t currently in a financial position to back our project we’d love it if you could share our trailer and spread the word, the more people see our project, the more likely it is to be successful.

Risks and challenges

As with any documentary, there are risks and challenges that may arise over the course of the production of this film. Once we've got over the hurdle of funding the project we'll be working hard to complete the filming within our deadline.

Although it's possible there may be unforeseen delays, we believe our team’s experience and enthusiasm will be equal to any problem.
