Since the book will, of course, be openly licensed, we won't be making any money from royalties down the road, which means the Kickstarter has to fund the entire project. We settled on a $50,000 goal after going through a fairly extensive process of estimating time and resources it will take to complete the book over the year.
We will create profiles of the 24 selected businesses, creators, and organizations using a modified version of the business model canvas from the Business Model Generation handbook. Each profile will be time-intensive because it will involve independent research, as well as interviews and collaboration with the business, org, or creator being profiled. After every 4 profiles, we will be pulling together larger common themes and lessons to write a long-form Medium post.
At the end of that process (using the timeline above), we'll spend the last several months putting everything together everything we learned for the book. And we'll extract the lessons we've learned to create an interactive online tool that others can use to create their own open business model (which will require our time, and some help from a developer.) We've also allocated a portion of the money to dedicate to design and layout of the ebook.
