About

I am an independent game designer and publisher.  You can see some of my games and prototypes at www.BowTieGames.com. One of the most common questions I get is from others that are interested in making their own board or card games.  They have the idea for the game, but they are not sure where to start in the process.  After helping several people though this process, I decided to publish a book that covers the basic steps

You will find that there are not a lot of books out there that just simply walk you through the steps on how to create a board game.  This book aims to remedy that issue.  In this book, you will find detailed information how to flush out your game idea, create a prototype, playtest the prototype to develop the game and finally how to get the game printed and out into the world.

The book also covers some basics on finding a publisher, self-publishing and how to use Kickstarter to fund your game.

*New to the 3rd Edition*

This edition covers how to use Component.Studio to create rapid prototypes.  Component Studio is a web-based tool that lets you upload a spreadsheet of your card attributes.  Then the site designer lets you create a card template and assign the spreadsheet column names and images on the template.  Once designed, each card is automatically generated based on the values in the spreadsheet.  For games that have several cards, tiles or tokens, this can save you hours of time.  Imaging playtesting your card and needing to tweak the values on cards and maybe the location of elements of the cards and being able to make that change on one template and apply it to all of the cards in your game instantly.  It's a real game changer in prototyping and design.
