Welcome & thanks for checking out our project, we're very excited to have you with us on this journey!
Here at Cravar, our designs always started with sketching the idea & writing down the details on paper. We love seeing how our designs evolve from the birth of the idea to prototype to the final design, all recorded physically. A journal is indispensable to us.
When we started out, a journal is one of the first goods we made. Over time, with feedback from backers & other end users, we turned what was good to great. With this project, we'd like to share with what we've been doing to make the collection better than ever and to make things easier for you, international shipping with tracking is included in all rewards.
One of our core design principle is to make our goods last a long time. The full grain vegetable tanned leather is an easy choice for the journal sleeve because its durable and it will age beautifully becoming part of your story.
The journals are refillable, once you finished the last page, you can insert another refill into your sleeve or if you prefer, slip in a Moleskine notebook (more info on this below), either way, your journal will accompany you for years to come.
In line with making the journals truly yours, the sleeves will also be free from distracting branding or logo. The only visible marking will be your stamped initials if you choose to opt for it, it is after all your journal.
This project's goal is to expand the journals’ sleeve designs & leather colors; providing more options for backers to choose their favorite journals and also to improve on our existing designs by adding a pen loop and modify the refill binding to make it more comfortable to use.
Our collection of leather bags have always been the focus of our previous projects. We think it’s time for our journals to take the center stage!
The journals are made up of two parts, the leather sleeve and the refill. There are 2 sizes, 3 sleeve designs and 8 colors for you to choose from. Plus, starting with the second update, there are now 3 sleeve sizes (small, large & the new A5) to choose from, read the details here.
The sleeves are made from full grain vegetable bark tanned leather processed with pit tanning method, a technique where the hides are moved progressively from a pit with weaker tanning liquor to stronger ones. The process takes some time, but the resulting beautiful leather more than makes up for it.
We spent a lot of time working the details on the book refills. We want them to be as functional as the sleeves are beautiful. The paper must be able to provide excellent writing & sketching experience & hold up well to many kinds of ink and pencil, so that you'll have the freedom to use the ones you love.
We have also announced in the 3rd update that A5 refills are now available! Read the details here.
The binding has to be strong & practical. The pages are stitched together for durability and we also made small changes to the binding technique to make the books' spine more flexible and open flat even easier. The refills also feature a thin matte bookmark ribbon. We think it goes together better with the rest of the journal compared to thick glossy one we used previously.
To complement your leather journals, we also have 2 other goods in this project. Just like our journals, these other goods can also be personalized with your initials.
First up is the leather passport sleeve. It's simple, really, you slip your passport's back cover to the right inner pocket and on the left side, you have two slots for cards, and one big slot for other stuff.
Last but certainly not least is our handy cardholder. Two inner slots that can hold around 5-7 cards each. We have reports that some of our previous backers have been very creative in using the cardholder, some use it as a simple wallet while others put (very) small notebook in it and make the card holder a mini leather sleeve.
Plus you can also pledge for additional refills, detailed here.
These are your journal, naturally it makes sense to have your initials on them. Every journal comes with a free option to personalize it with your initials (4 letters max, Roman Alphabet letters only).
The brass stamp sets we use is 8mm tall. We’ll be using an award winning geometric sans serif called Telefon from a very cool font foundry from Norway, Monokrom, chosen as one of the best typefaces of 2012 by FontShop.
If you want to stamp the journal with logos, sigil, etc, you can add a custom stamp to your pledge for $19. The design should fit within 2.5x2.5 cm or 5x1 cm template.
We could go on and on about how good our journals are, but don't just take our word for it, here are but a few of the great comments we received from your fellow backers, click on the quote to see the sources & the full comment:
In another comment, Jun Siang had this to say :
We wanted to have professional artists' view on the journals. So, we asked a few friends who are amazing artists to draw something for us. Very happy to report that the paper works great with many mediums.

All leather goods will be made in our own workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. With two successful Kickstarter projects on our belt, our team is prepared & capable to handle production.
The book refill will be bound & printed by a reliable printer with whom we've had the pleasure of collaborating with on tight deadline projects.
Regular registered shipping with basic tracking is included in all pledges (1-2weeks to arrive in the country, after that it depends on how long custom officials release the package).

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge will be getting the supplies on time.
Supplies, Leather :
At the midpoint of the project, we will give an estimate quantity we need to our tannery partner, so that he can start production.
After the project ends and we have received the survey replies we will then order the extra leather needed if we missed in our earlier estimate.
Supplies, Book Refill :
We ran into some problems with book suppliers in previous projects. After changing our printing suppliers, we settled with the current one. Rest assured that this one is a proven reliable partner.
Survey will be sent out in 1-2 days after project completion. If you’re worried about changing address, you can inform us before we ship the rewards.
Color accuracy :
Displaying accurate colors on all possible screens is very hard. That being said we've tried our best to make sure the photos properly represent the actual leather's colors.
