We made our Kickstarter debut last year. The goal then, was to start our collection, to show to the world that we have what it takes to produce quality leather goods & to do a good Kickstarter project. Based on the comments we received from your fellow backers, we'd like to think those goals were achieved!
So, why are we going back to Kickstarter? For one, because we had an absolute blast! We love the interaction, the sharing of ideas, the thrill of production, and the rush when we shipped the rewards, the anticipation of confirmation that the rewards have arrived and the big, big relieve & satisfaction when they were well received!
We learned a lot through that project, and we’d like you to be a part of our next journey as we expand our collection, and make this an even better project than the last.
Before we go into the details of the design, production, and eventually shipping phase, we'd like to show your the rewards we have in store for you!
We have four series of bags; Alpha, The F.C., The C.O., and our unlocked stretch goal series, The Wrap. Each series comes in 3 sizes; 15, 13 and 10, matching 15” laptop, 13” laptop and Ipad/tablet respectively.
We also have two series of journals, The Wrap & The Strap in 2 sizes, A5 & A6, with a choice of lined or unlined book.
We've provided detailed info on each series below, and also a short story on the the idea behind them.
But wait! There's more! Help us get to 250 backers as mention in the fifth update, and we'll upgrade it to this new, better one, made from Sunbrella!
You can also pledge for the sleeves only - without our great books, though you'd be missing out :), if you prefer to keep using Moleskines. The A5 can fit large (13x21cm) Moleskines while the A6 can fit small/pocket Moleskines (9x14cm).
Here you go. That guy from the video wearing green shirt, Yoki, is 6'/183cm, while the better dressed gentleman, Rama, is 5'9"/175cm
Just like in the previous project, we want the rewards to be truly yours. So, you can choose to have your rewards stamped with your name or initials. Roman alphabet letters only :). No numbers/characters. You can also choose for a custom stamp for a little add-on of $17, check out update #4 for details.
You've seen the rewards, now let us tell you how are we going to make this a better project, both in terms of the backers’ experience and the rewards themselves.
We concluded that enhancing those two variables, the rewards & the experience, comes down to these factors: the material (leather, lining, accessories & paper for our journal), the design, a customization option explained earlier (stamping), the interaction, the production and lastly the shipment.
This is the heart of the project. The main reason we need your financial support. Our previous leather was very well received, but we know we can do better.
We work together with our tannery partner from Jogjakarta, a city in Indonesia known for its leather industry. We developed the new leather, tanned with tree barks using pit tanning method.
Pit tanning is a traditional system where the hides are moved progressively from a pit with weaker tanning liquor to stronger ones. The process results in a strong, long lasting leather with a great finish.
More colors was one of the top requests we got from our backers. After we sort through many samples, we chose four colors. The initial colors will be Fox (a medium brown with a slight reddish tint) and our original color, Espresso (very dark, almost black brown).
There are also two stretch goal colors that now have been unlocked. They are; Sand (a very nice light tan) and Rust (a vintage dark brown with slight pull up effect).
In contrast to our traditional choice of leather, the Sunbrella fabric we use for lining in some of our bags bags is very modern. It is made from acrylic and is extremely durable with great water repellent properties. The fabric is actually meant to be used for marine activities. Lining bags with it might be overkill, but that’s just the way we like it.
Go ahead and search for leather bags with Sunbrella lining, chances are they are priced way above our rewards' prices.
The F.C & The C.O. series bags are lined, The Alpha & The Wrap series bags are unlined.
The solid brass accessories from a direct source is a must for us, so we can be sure of the quality. They are (except for the YKK zipper) handmade by Sotta, a family owned company that is also based in Jogjakarta like our tannery partner. They are handmade and finished with a slight vintage look. They might not be as clean cut look wise as machine made ones, but we’d like to think it adds a bit of a unique character to each of our goods.
It is by far, the best paper we can get our hands on. It is in light cream, 100gsm, fountain pen friendly, and an absolute joy to write or sketch on. Click for more info at Conqueror’s website.
We created new designs & tweaked all our existing lines to various degrees; some changes are actually pretty hard to spot. For example, the hidden strips of Sunbrella in parts of the bags that might get stretched; the handle & the leather piece holding the ring to insert the shoulder strap in Alphas.
Even though we now have a lot more designs, they all adhere to our core principles; durable, looks great and practical. We made multiple prototypes to come up with the ideal form of each design. Refining all details as we finalized them.
We use as few pieces of leather as possible to make the bags. In our stretch goal series, The Wrap, for example, one huge thick piece makes up the front, bottom, back, top & front flap. This results in fewer seams and make for a stronger bag.
Another common trait in all our bags is the use of long continuous body straps. They add strength to the structure, function as closing mechanism (also as handle in The C.O. and Wrap Series), and gave the bags their distinct Cravar look.
We believe that communication is key. Direct backers-creators interaction is one of the unique features of Kickstarter, and we love hearing from you! If you have any questions, suggestions or even just to say hi, go write a comment, or if you prefer to ask directly, just send us a message. We promise you, we'll reply fast. We prefer if you post your questions in the comments, that way we can have a lively discussion, and other backers will also benefit from it.
We will produce all rewards in our own workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. Our first project has allowed us to expand our team and equipment and most importantly prove the quality of our work & service. We’re glad to say we've learned a lot more since then to make our production flow more efficient.
We believe that creating a Kickstarter project is a promise we as creators have to deliver and we are ready for the challenge this project will entail. As much as possible, we have accounted for all the variables involved in producing and getting the rewards to you.
The limit we set on the rewards option is the number we're pretty sure we can deliver on time. If the project go past that limit, we will open new slots with later delivery.
To make the pledge levels simple for everyone, we've included shipping cost in all rewards level. Journal backers can choose to upgrade their shipping, you can see the details in update #1.
Basically, everything is set ; prototypes as seen in the photos are finalized and have been tried out & refined; the leather characteristics we want to go for is also set; production methods have been prepared; the last piece of the puzzle is your support to make the project a reality!
Yoki P. Baskara Designer & product developer, and most importantly for you, the guy you will be communicating with throughout this project. While he has no formal training in design, (he studied finance, actually) he’s one to never stop learning and obsessing over the details. Check out his personal Kickstarter profile for projects he's backed.
Rama Luhur He manages the logistics and business side. After the rewards are all made, he’s the man in charge of getting them to you on time. A good thing is that he’s backed by years of experience working for a multinational shipping company.
Vega Vashtiary Yoki’s sparring partner when it comes to designing. She’s been invaluable in keeping Yoki’s more radical designs in check, and provides sound advices on practicality.
Well, the most obvious reason would be that the bags and journals are great and you're looking for one or more!. Ok, aside from that, why should you choose to support Cravar and why we need your support.
We care about our products and about you being satisfied with them. Our mindset is that the end of the project is when you receive them and you're happy with your rewards.
We can't promise 100% that the project will go without a problem. What we can is promise you we'll be upfront about it and to try deal with it. After all, the journey to the reward fulfillment, with its ups and downs, is one of the things that makes Kickstarter unique.
We know what we can & can't do.
Between the team members & production crew, we have all the in-house knowledge required to do this project from the design to shipment stage. We also know what we we're not capable of, we know we can't make 1.000 bags by July for example, thus the limit.
We will be here.
You'll be hearing from us throughout this project. Direct communication between creator & backers are one of the things we love about Kickstarter. There won't be post launch silence. :)
We've been there.
We learned many things from our first project and as much as we can we'll apply what we have learned to make this project a pleasant experience for you.
We make them ourselves.
Relying on a manufacturer can be tricky, if you find a good and reliable one, that's great and can take away a lot of headache. However, from the beginning of Cravar, we always knew we wanted to make our products in-house so we can be sure of the quality. The buck stops with us.
We need you.
Last but certainly not least, this is the bottom line. We need your support. So, thank you for joining us on the journey!
Many thanks to our media friends who have helped us spread the word. You guys are awesome!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenges in our first project (and we expect it to be the same this time) were getting the leather & handmade accessories on time and getting the rewards to backers on schedule.
Supplies, Leather :
At a certain point in the project (if we are funded by then), we will order the leather we estimated will be needed, so that our supplier can start production. A good thing is that we've negotiated with him to make the payment after we receive the funding.
Given the variety of the rewards, we might ask you mid project on your choice of bag model & color. Your answer will really help us be more efficient on the reward fulfillment.
After the project ends and we have received the survey replies we will then order the extra leather needed if we missed in our earlier estimate.
Supplies, Accessories :
For accessories, we've acquired a sizable inventory that will be enough to start production while waiting for additional ones.
Another challenge would be if we reach all stretch goals and get over pledged by a huge margin. In our first project, we didn't hesitate to bear the costs of buying additional equipment and expand our production capacity to meet that challenge. If we have to do it again, we will. Simple as that.
In our first project, we shipped on time, but the challenge was more from the fact that we shipped the rewards in early December, busiest time of the year, during a very cold winter causing airports to shut down resulting in delays. While we can’t account for the weather, we will do our best to assist you during the shipping process. We will periodically check where the rewards are and if necessary contact the courier to help locate your reward.
Survey will be sent out in 1-2 days after project completion. If you’re worried about changing address, you can inform us before we ship the rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
