Indie rock band Wahoo Morris is ready to hit the road to rock ‘n roll fame and glory. Made up of long time friends Chas on bass, Sebastien on lead guitar, and Arnie on drums, the fledgling group is rounded out by newcomer Alicia on lead vocals. On stage the band gels, but off-stage things aren’t going quite so smoothly. Sebastien has developed an attraction to Alicia that is not in the band’s best interest. And the band’s enigmatic new lead singer’s dabbling in the occult threatens more than their carefully laid plans for success when her powerful voice raises a long slumbering evil....
A character driven mashup of Slice-Of-Life Drama/Comedy and Urban Fantasy, Wahoo Morris is perfect for fans of Strangers in Paradise, Love and Rockets, Sandman, and any fun, funny, and engaging character driven comics.
Wahoo Morris is a 201 page story written and drawn by Craig A. Taillefer (that’s me!) in glorious black & white and published in two parts as a set of two 8" x 5.5” paperback books.
Wahoo Morris Book 1 is 96 pages in black and white and reprints chapters 1 – 4 (originally published as individual comic books in print and on Comixology) - In print.
Wahoo Morris Book 2 is 136 pages in black and white and prints chapters 5 – 10 (originally serialized online as a web comic at www.wahoomorris.com and as digital comics issues 5 - 10 on Comixilogy) - To be published.
My goal is to raise $3,500 in Canadian Funds to print an offset print run of 1000 copies of Wahoo Morris Book 2. Approximately $350 will go towards Kickstarter fees, $2400 will cover the printing bill, and the remainder will go towards the postage costs of shipping the backer rewards.
Any money raised above the goal will go towards stretch goals. I have a few in mind, and if we raise enough, one of them might even be new Wahoo Morris stories!
The long and winding road of Wahoo Morris: or, how did I get here?
Wahoo Morris has been a passion project with a long gestation and creation. I came up with the idea for the story while working as an inker on ElfQuest titles like Hidden Years, Blood of Ten Chiefs, Jinx, and Rebels. I wanted to work on a project that was my own and was something creatively satisfying, AND, I wanted to take control of my career and schedule.
In 1998 I self published the first issue under the Too Hip Gotta Go Graphics imprint to a very warm reception. Reviews were excellent, and individual comic book stores were reporting good sales. Unfortunately, by issue 3 I was still in only a few dozen stores in the Direct Market, and I was in debt from the push to advertise and launch the series and print the first 3 issues. I just didn't have the money to continue.
I cancelled the series, and, unable to find any new freelance work in comics, I moved into TV animation as a profession.
6 years later... after having done a few comics things on the side including acting as the publisher for the Eisner Award Nominated younger readers series Growing Up Enchanted and a trade paperback collection of the Fantasy Series Sleeping Dragons, I got bit by the comic bug again. I completed chapter 4 of Wahoo Morris, drew the Harvey Award nominated daily comic strip The Chelation Kid for 7 months, followed by a 7 month run (first inking, then drawing) the Harvey Award Nominated daily comic strip The Mighty Motor Sapiens, and illustrated a story in the Eisner Award Nominated anthology Comic Book Tattoo among other freelance works.
After realizing the same obstacles keeping a black and white comic book series from succeeding in the Direct Market were still there, I decided to go to a web comic and Graphic Novel publishing plan for Wahoo Morris. I published Wahoo Morris Book 1 reprinting the 4 previously published issues and published a Free Comic Book Day edition of Wahoo Morris #1 to help promote it.
Then I got back to work on Wahoo Morris Book 2.
It took a lot longer to complete than I originally planned, as my "day job" as a freelance storyboard artist for TV animation is quite demanding time-wise. I also got distracted by a few other comic projects on the side, but I remained committed to finishing this passion project.
And, the final page of the web comic serialization ran on October 25th, 2017.
The story is complete, Wahoo Morris Book 2 is ready to be published, and I am now coming to Kickstarter to ask for your support in getting the completion of Wahoo Morris into print and into the hands of my readers new and old.
OTTAWA RESIDENTS - If you want to avoid shipping charges and pick up your rewards from me in person, there are two LOCAL PICKUP pledge levels: One for a copy of Book 2 and one for a Bundle of Book 1 & 2. If you want to upgrade to the Bookplate Edition, Sketch Edition, or Deluxe Edition, simply click on the Manage Your Pledge button to increase your pledge to match the face value of the reward level you want. Then email me at craig.a.taillefer (at) gmail.com and let me know what you pledged for. For unlimited rewards only. If you want one of the pieces of original art I can refund shipping in person, or add on books to your pledge and subtract the shipping cost from the total pledge amount.
*Note - Original Art will be shipped tracked and insured, which is why shipping is so expensive!*
I will try to organize a book launch party as well as do a series of signings at shops like The Comic Book Shoppe and Comet Comics and you can always catch me gigging around town with my band - but please keep in mind it will be YOUR responsibility to pick up your rewards.
RETAILERS - If you want to support the Kickstarter and buy bulk books for your store, there is a RETAILER PLEDGE LEVEL for a bundle of 4 copies of Book 1 and 4 copies of Book 2 at 50% off and FREE Shipping in Canada and the U.S.
I'm happy to ship as few as one book, or as many as you want in any combination at the same terms. Email me at craig.a.taillefer (at) gmail.com to discuss.
And remember, you can read the whole story from the beginning here.
Meet The Creative Team
Craig A. Taillefer I'm the creator, writer & artist of Wahoo Morris. I'm a cartoonist by day (many days go late into the night!) and a musician by night. And I love to make comics!
Wahoo Morris was primarily a one-man-band creative effort. But I would be remiss if I didn’t give credit where credit is due to my studio assistant Haley.
She was with me, dragging her tail through wet ink, stomping on the keyboard, swatting my drawing hand, stealing my chair whenever I got up, and just keeping me company and warm almost all of the way through the creation of Wahoo Morris.

Risks and challenges
While this is my first Kickstarter, I have published 11 previous books and comics, so I've overcome a lot of the same challenges involved multiple times.
The book is 100% complete with the exception of the "Thank You" page. As soon as the campaign is over, and the Kickstarter Survey is complete and I have all the backer names, I will design the "Thank You" page(s) and send the book to the printer.
All Digital rewards will go out as soon as the print ready file is completed.
Printer delays and snafus are possible (though they haven't happened to me yet. Knock on wood!) and not knowing how many physical rewards I will have to ship makes it hard to guesstimate the timeline. But, as soon as books are back from the printer, I will begin signing books and shipping rewards. The sketch and commission rewards are the real variable as I don't know now whether I'm committing to a long weekends worth of work or a couple weeks!
But, I'll keep you all up to date as I go with my progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
