LET'S TALK STRETCH GOALS!
Because of the incredible generosity of so many of yout, we hit our initial goal in less than 15 days! But this exciting journey is far from over! We have until the end of March to ensure that these videos can be the very best they can be! You can help us do that with every additional amount raised. Will you help us reach our next stretch goal and be a part of making engaging and compelling videos from the Bible lands FREE to every student of the Bible?
We believe that the Bible contains the greatest stories ever told. It has the power to connect with everyone because it is a message that can be communicated across languages, cultures, and through various methods.
A recent survey that we did showed that 74% of Bible class teachers felt that using videos as a supplemental resource in their classes would help to engage their students, but of the same group, only 6% of them were actually using video.
A 2015 Pew Research Center study indicated a significant decrease in religious affiliation among young people. While this is certainly due to a variety of factors, we believe that more can be done to help engage people, young and old, in order to bring this powerful message to life.
We are video producers and cinematographers from Indianapolis, Indiana and active members of our local churches. As we have tried to bring to life the message of the gospel and, specifically, the history and geography of the Bible, we have felt that maps and photos can only take us so far. Students of the Bible want to experience these stories in ways that engage them and help them really see in their mind's eye the places and cultures where these things took place.
Both of us understand and believe in the power of visual media to do exactly that: to take people places. But as we looked for well-produced, easily accessible, and accurate videos about the history and geography of the Bible lands, we were disappointed to find this kind of material rather hard to come by and, often times, incredibly out-dated; they were more like lectures on video and far less like the engaging and immersive experiences that we thought a trip to the Bible lands ought to be.
Instead of bemoaning the lack of professionally produced, accurate, and easily accessible videos from the Bible lands, we want to create our own...and give them away FOR FREE.
Our goal is to travel to the Bible lands and create the first 5 episodes of "Following the Messiah," a mini-series following the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Our two week trip will take us to places like Bethlehem, Jerusalem, the sea of Galilee, Nazareth, and many others, as we explore and discover some of the very places that Jesus walked. Think "That the World May Know," mixed with the Travel Channel and a dose of "Parts Unknown," all the while providing sound, relevant, and engaging insight into the story of the Bible.
Each episode would be 20-25 minutes in length, but made up of smaller sections, so you could choose to watch each video in its entirety or in smaller pieces, and still have time in an average Bible class for questions and discussions.
The first 5 episodes would cover the places and stories of the early years of Christ's life, up until the beginning of His ministry. A further breakdown of each episode is coming soon, but a basic outline of each episode is below:
- Episode 1: The Birth of Christ -(Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, Matthew 1-2, Luke 1-2:40, John 1:1-18)
- Episode 2: Toddler to Teacher - (Nazareth, Galilee, Jerusalem, Luke 2:41-52)
- Episode 3: Baptism and Wilderness Wanderings - (Jordan River and Wilderness, Matthew 3:13 - 4:11, Mark 1:9-12, Luke 3:21 - 4:13)
- Episode 4: Choosing the Disciples - (Galilee, Capernaum, Matthew 4:18-22, 10:1-4, Mark 1:14-20, John 1:35-42)
- Episode 5: Jesus' Mission on Earth - (John 1:1-18, Luke 2:41-52)
We plan to communicate the gospel story, according to the inspired and perfect Word of God. Nothing more, nothing less. This is not an attempt to improve upon God's message of salvation, but merely meant to serve as a resource to help give compelling visuals to the land, people, and culture where this story took place; to help students of the Bible visualize the birth and early life of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
We need your help. Will you partner with us to produce the first in a series of Bible land videos that we can provide as a FREE resource to every teacher, preacher, and student of the Bible?
The idea behind "Appian Media" originates from the Roman roadway known as "The Appian Way," built in the 1st century. This road was the most impressive of its kind and opened up huge opportunities for travel, commerce, and for military campaigns. This road however, while originally designed for worldly pursuits, was used by the 1st century Christians to bring the gospel to places that were not before easily accessible. They used whatever avenues were available to them to further the cause of Christ. (Acts 25:18)
We believe that the internet (and media in particular) is the "Appian Way" of our time. What was originally created for worldly pursuits can be (if used correctly) an incredibly effective avenue to take the gospel to the far reaches of the world; into places that would otherwise be incredibly difficult to reach. Countless people are using these things to communicate and to consume content and so we see this "Appian Way" as one of many compelling ways to bring Christ and His message to those that need it.
Both of us have extensive experience planning and budgeting a wide variety of video projects and have scoped out what we believe to be the minimum that we will need to create and release these videos. At this point, this campaign will simply cover costs and is not intended to generate revenue. A general breakdown of our $40,000 budget is below.
A detailed budget will be made available in our FAQ.
We believe there is a clear need for well-made, engaging, and Biblically sound video material to help in reaching people with the life-changing message of the Bible, but we need your help! We simply cannot make these videos without you.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing platform. Either we raise the full amount by the end of the campaign period or we don't get anything and these videos simply will not get made.
We invite you to join with us in this effort, contribute what you are able, interact with us here and on social networks, and help spread this campaign to your friends, family, and the members of your local church.
Together, we can help make the Bible lands come to life through video and give it to the world for free.

Barry Britnell traveled to Israel for the first time in 2010. After a follow-up trip in 2012, Barry started his website ExploringBibleLands.com, where he regularly blogs and posts pictures from the lands of the Bible. Since that time, Barry has led two successful Bible study tours of Israel (June 2014 and October 2015) and regularly preaches and teaches at his home congregation on Biblical Geography. He lives in Athens, Alabama with his wife, Tabatha, and their three children.
Jeremy Dehut serves as a preacher, teacher and counselor. He writes a blog at JeremyDehut.com, where he also provides Bible study material. He has taught college campus classes, and led weekly studies in both a state penitentiary and a local women’s shelter. Jeremy made his first trip to Israel with Barry in October of 2015. He lives in Birmingham, Alabama with his wife, Anna. They have five children.
Risks and challenges
Some of the challenges that we will face stem mostly from the fact that there are so few projects remotely similar to ours.
- We will have a very full schedule while in Israel, working to capture material for 5 full episodes. We will use Barry's expertise and experience of past trips to Israel to plan out each step of our journey, and Jeremy's work as an evangelist, teacher, and counselor to craft the Biblical material to be covered in each episode. Extensive study of the text will be essential, in order to accurately and faithfully complement the story of Jesus' birth and early life, and to make sure we are making the best use of our time while there.
- While $40,000 seems like a large budget, the amount that we need to turn this project into a reality is, frankly, a small fraction of what Hollywood would spend on a project of this scope. And the potential impact of these videos for students of the Bible, all over the world, is incalculable. We would love to see even more raised in order to reach some of our stretch goals, which would only increase the production value of these videos and help us reach even more viewers by providing closed captioning and translations into other languages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
