About

Proud to Play iPad Cover

The Proud to Play iPad cover is a must have for everyone using their iPad hardware in severe conditions and temporary likes to limit it’s use to a single app without intervention. The Proud to Play iPad cover allows very young children playing with your iPad without the chance that your private data and communications will be disturbed or the sound would be manipulated to a higher level

Under severe circumstances, like driving on bumpy roads, your iPad won’t slide away from your lap with the Proud to Play cover. Perfect for ambulance employees using just a single app for communication and data exchange that should not be interrupted by an incorrect hardware command. Also in semi-public environments your visitors can be invited to use a dedicated app with the Proud to Play iPad cover without the need for strict supervision.

Our Project

We have, however, developed the Proud to Play iPad cover for people with dementia playing happy games, not knowing there would be so many others that could benefit from it’s concept as well. The last two years we have studied as International ‘In Touch’ consortium the effect on people with dementia playing happy games on an iPad within the three largest Care Organizations of Rotterdam (Aafje, Laurens and Humanitas). We have developed the Proud to Play iPad cover for the observations as part of our research, matching the potential of people with dementia playing individually.

One of the outcomes of this survey was that people with dementia could engage themselves happily with iPad games when some constraints and personal preferences are respected. Most caregivers considered the use of the Proud to Play iPad cover as an essential attribute for several reasons, like

  • Safety for the player and the iPad
  • Stability using the iPad on a table or one’s lap
  • Covering the hardware buttons for on-going playing pleasure
  • Smart and elegant design

For our observations we used handmade prototype covers. During the assimilation of our research outcome many professional caregivers and relatives requested us to produce this Proud to Play iPad cover as they believe the current heavy-duty covers in the market will not be that effective.

The Proud branding stands for Powered by Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences Design. We are proud that we can contribute to the enhancement of people with dementia enabling them to be Proud to Play. We are thanking our partners whose contribution to the project was essential for our research results especially SIA Raak as subsidizer of the 'In Touch" research project which made the development of the Proud to Play iPad cover possible. Producing the Proud to Play iPad cover and a wide circulation would enable further exchange of experiences for the development of more happy games for people with dementia. We are eager to continue this research program.

Our research report (in Dutch) can be downloaded at http://zorginnovatie.hr.nl/nl/Projecten/Zorginnovatie-met-Technologie/In-Touch

Every produced Proud to Play iPad cover will motivate us for finishing the development of the HappyGames.app for people with dementia of which the prototype is already available in the iTunes Store for free. Furthermore we will continue our research for the development of tools for predicting a match between an iPad game and the interest and abilities of people with dementia.

The Product

The photos of the Proud to Play iPad cover on this page are taken from our tested prototypes that were made from hand made silicon rubber. Our production model however, will be made from sturdy foam plastic (EVA) as used in the famous Crocs™ shoes. This material reduces the weight to app. 270 grs and has many advantages, like impact and vibration absorption, weather and chemical resistance including splash resistance to oils and cleaning aids.

The elastic foam covers the hardware buttons from the player while the caregiver can easily slide away the clasping flaps to reach the buttons or press invisible buttons right through the foam. The round ball shape at the backside of the lightweight cover makes it possible to take the iPad on one’s lap preventing it to slip away. The surface will be a little roughened for a steady grip on the table. At the back of the iPad, storage room is created for accessories like a headset or cable. The Proud to Play iPad cover is ready to use and can be positioned both vertically as horizontally. The retro design has a resemblance of an old CRT- television for product recognition.

For this target group colours should be satirized for not disturbing the concentration during a play while being distinctive enough in the surrounding. In our market survey amongst care professionals there was a strong colour preference for blue and red for the product. Therefor we will produce the Proud to Play iPad cover in Coral Red (RAL 3016) and Sky Blue (RAL 5015). These colours differ from the colours chosen for our prototypes and also the material will show the colour more opaque.

The Proud to Play iPad cover will fit the iPad 2,3 and 4 and not the newest models iPad Air. The reason is that many iPad users like to supply their old iPads or the less expensive models for this purpose. Our ‘buy one and give one’ alternative for the Proud to Play iPad cover as well as passing over your old iPad to your relative with dementia will create may happy moments for your loved one.

Why Kickstarter?

Public funding has financed the development and testing of the Proud to Play iPad cover. We like to give back to the community the result of our knowledge base without commercial benefit. Kickstarter gives us the possibility to share our experience and creativity with all those that are aware of the growing population of people with dementia and the necessity to find ways for creating happy moments.

The ‘In Touch’ Research has been initiated by the Research Centre Innovations in Care of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. We are aware that the international market need for the Proud to Play iPad cover is high. We, however, have no organizational power to fund the first production run and market the product properly. We are convinced that with this campaign the niche marked for products especially developed for people with dementia will be opened for continuity.

Our Goal

For the production run we need to develop and produce manufacturing tools and purchasing materials. The first production runs will need to be 500 pieces at least per colour. This means we need funding for at least 1000 Proud to Play iPad covers. We have however found a dedicated partner in a professional producer, who is willing to back the first € 15.000 to ensure production. This means we can lower the minimum funding level to € 20.000.

If we, however, achieve the full funding amount of € 35.000, we can offer every backer a free screen protector with a market value of app. € 5.- as an extra.

Therefor we have the following options:

Option1:

Proud to Play iPad cover in Sky Blue for € 35. -

Option 2:

Proud to Play iPad cover in Coral Red for € 35.-

Option 3:

Buy one Sky Blue and give one Proud to Play iPad cover for € 65.-

Option 4:

Buy one Coral Red and give one Proud to Play iPad cover for € 65.-

If you are an employer of a day care centre or family member that loves to benefit from this campaign and to promote this campaign in your media, please contact us for publicity material at kenniscentrumzorginnovatie@hr.nl

We already have included the following Care Institutes in our Beneficial Program:

  • Aafje, Rotterdam NL
  • Humanitas, Rotterdam NL
  • Laurens, Rotterdam NL

Our time line is that at the end of December our project is hopefully funded. We could start earlier with the production of the manufacturing tools when our funding goal has been achieved sooner. The total preparation time will approximately take 3 months. We would like to start shipping in March 2015.

Dr. Marleen Goumans

Professor of integrated care for older persons, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences

'The Proud to Play iPad cover provides an easy to handle cover for your iPad. It is also a comfortable cover which stands stable and prevents your iPad from breaking when it happens to fall down. It suports a safe and steady use of the iPad by people who are not fully capable of understanding all the possibilities the iPad offers. I am proud that our students where capable of designing and testing the Proud to Play in daily (care) practice.'

Dr. Jacomine de Lange

Professor in Transitions in Care, Rotterdam University of Applied Science

"Happy gaming on the I-pad is a useful addition on existing activities for people with dementia. The Proud to Play iPad cover will make it more convenient for them!"

Prof. Dr. Helianthe Kort:

Professor in Demand Driven Care, Utrecht University of Applied Science and Eindhoven University of Technology

"Frail older adults living in nursing homes or small scale living care facilities, usually have a structured day-programme which is scheduled such to benefit a whole group of older adults. The day programmes have hardly any time left for personalized engagement. With an easy accessible tablet with games appealing to one’s preference, there is time for fun during the day. With the Proud to Play iPad cover older adults need not to be afraid that the tablet will fall and break, because they will have a good grip on the tablet."

Risks and challenges

The prototypes of the tested Proud to Play iPad covers were hand made from silicone rubber. Our choice for EVA foam plastic will reduce the weight by 75%. The material however, could give a different look and feel. We have found a professional producer though, with experience in the manufacturing of iPad covers in EVA foam. This gives us the trust that the fit of the iPad and the flexibility of the material close to the buttons will be made correctly.
