Get Inspired to Sketch More Often, Confidently, and Creatively!
Hi, I'm Carole, a watercolor artist, workshop teacher, and urban sketcher. In my workshops, I often discuss the importance of sketching to skills development and show examples of my sketchbooks. Students invariably express a desire to start sketching but then lose momentum or are unsure how to start or maintain a sketching practice. I created The Sketch Deck™ in part to as a tool to help them, but then discovered that both I and many of my artist and sketcher friends liked using it, too!
This Kickstarter is intended to expose the deck to more sketchers and get enough backing to both fulfill rewards and fund a "startup" inventory of decks for myself. This project is being done solely by myself, so I am keeping things simple and straightforward.
What is The Sketch Deck?
It's a new creative tool in the form of a card deck that is designed to encourage and inspire more frequent, more creative, more confident sketching.
The deck contains forty-eight cards divided into Drawing, Color Play, Page Element, Theme, and Challenge categories (even more categories may be added in future booster packs). Each card focuses on a specific practice, with one or more related prompts. Some cards also include creative kick-starts to fire up your imagination. Every card (see examples below) has a Practice Points value that you can use to set sketching goals and track progress.
Using the Deck
No matter what your sketching experience, the deck is easy to use. Simply choose one or more cards and use the prompts as a guide to create your next sketch. You can choose cards randomly or deliberately, ignore cards you don't like, and interpret prompts and creative kickstarts in whatever way suits you. Use the deck alone, with friends, or in classes or workshops. It’s small enough to tuck into a pocket or your sketch bag—so it can go wherever you go to sketch.
The Sketch Deck Companion Guide
The Sketch Deck Companion Guide is a digital (downloadable PDF format), 100+ page guide featuring instructional tips for using the deck and a full-page example sketch for each card. These sketches will demonstrate the practice intent of the card and usually contain my musings about that particular practice activity. Everyone who backs this project for at least one deck will get a download link for the Companion Guide (cover mock-up below).
This is where things stand right now:
- The Sketch Deck has been tested and reviewed by members of the Fredericksburg, VA Urban Sketchers group (thanks Paula R, Todd C, and Clifton E!) as well as by other artists. Based on their excellent feedback, many modifications were made to improve what is now the "final" design.
- The deck design is complete and essentially ready to go to the printer, although I may make some small design and editing tweaks before the end of the campaign.
- The Companion Guide is currently in progress. The layout is designed. I'm completing all the sketches first, then will return to the writing. I'm designing the Guide for delivery as a PDF download for this Kickstarter, but it is designed as a book and you will be able to print it yourself if you wish to. Note: I am also planning future distribution as a printed book through Amazon. The printed book will not be ready for this Kickstarter, so it is not currently offered in any reward tiers. When the printed book becomes available, I will post an update here about it and offer it at at deeply discounted price for 90 days.
- Graphic design for stretch goals is underway or completed and cost estimates have been analyzed.
The estimated August 2019 delivery date for all rewards is easily on track. It might even happen earlier.
Help Me Bring The Sketch Desk to Life!
The Sketch Deck and its Companion Guide need your financial support to get a running start. Please help this campaign succeed by backing The Sketch Deck if you can, or sharing the project with friends and on social media with the hashtag #thesketchdeck.
How Kickstarter Works
To support this project, simply click one of the reward tiers off to the right and pledge the amount indicated for both the reward and shipping costs (shown when you pledge). You can be awesome and pledge more than the minimum amount for a tier just as a show of extra support, but you will still only get the rewards listed for that tier. When you pledge, you will be asked for payment information but you won't be charged unless the project reaches its funding goal. Remember, Kickstarter is all or nothing: if the project doesn't meet its funding goal, funding will not happen and you won't be charged. If the funding goal is achieved, then you will be charged and I will get to work on fulfilling the rewards for the level you supported at. While the campaign is live, I will be posting regular updates, at least weekly and likely more often than that.
I'm keeping this project simple on purpose but who doesn't love a fun perk for reaching important funding goals?
$3,500 FUNDING GOAL ACHIEVED
For each deck you get as part of your rewards, you will also receive 5 self-adhesive illustrated sketchbook bookplates featuring the sketching tools on the card backs and box, plus a space to record your contact information in case a sketchbook is lost and sketchbook title or number.
$7,000 IN FUNDING ACHIEVED
For each deck you get as part of your rewards, you will also receive one "I'd Rather Be Sketching" high-quality weather-resistant sticker (approx 3" x 6"). Well, wouldn't we all?!
$14,000 IN FUNDING ACHIEVED
For each deck you get as part of your rewards, you will also receive two "I'd Rather Be Sketching" note cards and envelopes in protective sleeves, illustrated with the sketching tools from the deck box.
$18,000 IN FUNDING ACHIEVED
For each deck you get as part of your rewards, you will also receive the 10-card Kickstarter Backers Exclusive Booster Pack (image is a mock-up). No one else will ever get this except folks who back this project!
Let's cross that bridge if we come to it!
International Shipping Notes
International shipping is a complicated subject. Costs are quite high...there is sadly nothing I can do about that. For example, the cost to ship an international package via USPS (the cheapest way) almost doubles when it gets to 9 oz. Two decks, all stretch goal rewards, and package will certainly exceed 9 oz. As a self-employed artist, I can't risk having to absorb unforeseen international shipping costs by just saying "ships anywhere in the world". So, I'm taking a cautious approach.
I've analyzed costs and customs regulations for a bunch of countries and will ship to them for most of the reward tiers. If your country is not on the list for a reward tier that interests you, please message me or post a comment. I am happy to add countries from which there is specific backer interest, and will calculate the appropriate shipping costs at that time.
International backers will be responsible for any import duties or other fees. Those are not covered by the shipping cost.
If you and a group of friends want to do a "bulk buy" in order to share in the shipping cost, let me know what you're thinking and I'm happy to try and figure out what we might work out with a new rewards tier that meets your needs.
Risks and challenges
I ran a successful Kickstarter for my book Doggitude: What Dogs REALLY Think in 17 Sassy Syllables (on a different KS account--you can search for it). I have a good handle on the organization, communication, and effort required to run a successful Kickstarter and deliver rewards on schedule.
The Sketch Deck is fully designed, has been play-tested by urban sketchers and artists, and is ready to go to the printer. The Companion Guide is currently a work in progress and should be completed before this campaign ends. Stretch goal rewards are designed and ready to go to the printer, with the exception of the backer-exclusive expansion pack. I am currently working on those cards and anticipate it will be completed and ready for print before this campaign ends.
Factoring in printing production time and shipping of products to me, then packaging up and shipping rewards, I feel confident about delivering in August 2019. If something gets in the way of that which I could not foresee, you will be the first to know.
Communications about any creative project is so important! You can expect me to provide frequent updates on my progress on all fronts, so you will always be in the loop on where things stand. I welcome your questions and comments along the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
