Window Buffalo, Fake Fireplaces, and Lots More

Posted by CoworkBuffalo (Creator)

Good morning, CoworkBuffalo backers!

It is technically 16 degrees Fahrenheit outside CoworkBuffalo as I write this, but it "feels like" zero degrees.

Ever wonder how they determine that "feels like"/"Real feel" temperature? Do they hire someone who has previously lived at McMurdo Station to stand outside for five minutes every hour and text over his thoughts?

On to the point: it's four coworkers and two co-founders in the space this morning, on a day when many people would choose not to go anywhere at all. We've had three potential new members tour the space this week. The majority of that interest and word-spreading is due to you folks, who have helped us add some professional amenities and much greater visibility.

Before we take you on a brief tour, let me remind the backers at the $50 and above level that if you haven't yet reserved your ticket for our backer party on March 7, please do so! The link is in a message we sent out previously—check your spam, "Promotion," and other catch-all folders if you did not see it.

And! And! If you are a backer who lives around Buffalo (or is attending the party), your rewards will be ready for pick-up at or after that March 7 party. We have your posters, T-shirts, stickers, and day pass names in place, with coffee mugs to come very soon. Contact us at if you have any questions about rewards, or if you want to arrange a time to pick up locally.

What's new around the space

As you saw up top, we have some signage up facing Main Street. It is a huge relief to have people walk past and look at something on the window and know our name. Previously, they would stop, peer in the window at all those people on their laptops, and wonder, presumably, what kind of government grant funded this strange psychological workplace study.

Along with our name and a whole bunch of pixellated Buffalo on Main Street, we also added a sizable foam core Buffalo logo to the wall in our "bullpen," both for branding (branding!) and so that our space was intriguing to those walking down Main Street.

We recently made a big upgrade to the conference/meeting area, with an 8-10 person table with built-in power ports, a wall-mounted TV (with a Chromecast attached for easy page/video beaming, and soon an Apple TV, too), and upgraded chairs.

Here's one use of that table and TV on a snowed-in day:

We have upgraded some of the "Solo Warrior" desks to glass-topped units with elevated monitor stands. We have two decent Apple monitors for people to plug into and get down with their two-screen selves; we expect to add more.

Finally, while we wait for some other pieces of our upgrades to come together (and find time to finish painting and sound-proofing the phone booths), we are experimenting with some new coffee tricks. We're rotating coffee from Public Espresso and small bags from Hayes Home Roast into the mix, and slowly teaching more members to make both Chemex and individual V60 pour-over cups.

More things to file under Coming Soon: a portable divider to make the meeting space a bit more private, a full-size fridge, and some upgraded storage for items shipped here.

We can't wait to see you here at CoworkBuffalo, whether for a party, a day visit, or when schools are closed and your kids are home and they are driving you absolutely nuts and you need to get some work done (which has been a thing lately!

Act local (for pick-up of rewards)

Posted by CoworkBuffalo (Creator)

Good morning backers and friends,

We received more than one message about this, so we should point out: Anyone in the Buffalo area, or who plans on attending our backer party, will have the option of picking up their gear here instead.

That saves us the cost of shipping, saves everyone the fuel use, packaging materials, and time, and that saves you the trouble of waiting for the package person or hoping your mailbox can hold a mug and rolled-up poster, and so forth. We will definitely still ship out our rewards to folks who live out of town, but we'll set up that option and notify you soon.

In the meantime, we're seeing a lot of interest in our space as an event venue, fixing up our unique door lock scheme, and working on some capital improvements already. And we're shooting for a late February party still, but we'll keep you all informed of our progress. PARTY.

Egads! Stretch goal hit, phone booths named, work to do!

Posted by CoworkBuffalo (Creator)

Good late-morning, CoworkBuffalo supporters,

Here's the really short version of this post-deadline update for those who have to get to work (or lunch):

We did it, and we hit a stretch goal, and now there are lots of opportunities, and rewards to ship!
We did it, and we hit a stretch goal, and now there are lots of opportunities, and rewards to ship!

For those who want the story:

I was cleaning out rooms and sweeping for some floor refinishing work around my house last night. I had my phone plugged in and laying on the floor. Between the new funder updates and oh-my-did-you-see-this texts from the co-founders, I'm pretty sure my wife and dog will never let me keep my phone on vibrate ever again. Sleep was lost, barking was heard, but, come on—we hit our ridiculous stretch goal, and then some!

One last-minute backer bought the naming rights to a phone booth, and we just heard today that another phone booth might be claimed. And quite a few locals and supporters from afar jumped in as we approached midnight. It's nearly a cliché, but we are honestly surprised and amazed to discover that so many people are willing to support our quirky little project in downtown Buffalo.

We have many thank you notes and tweets to write, but more than that, we now have some promises to keep. We'll soon have the funds to improve the working experience for everybody's day passes and our extremely gracious members, sure. We're eager to tackle those phone booths, upgrade some chairs, and give everyone a full-size fridge for their tasty lunches.

But we will also be planning a really fun party, stuffing envelopes with stickers, setting up a thank-you wall, and designing and printing coffee mugs, (many more) posters, and T-shirts. We'll keep you updated on how things are coming with your rewards shipping, which we expect (as of now) to ship in February. As with all Kickstarter campaigns, we'll only be able to send those of you with mail-able rewards a claiming survey once, so keep an eye on your inbox.

Okay, time to get back to work. There's a lot of it now! All thanks to you very kind folks who want to see Buffalo have a good community space for freelancers, remote workers, and community groups.

Last 24 Hours! Can You Share Us and Get Yourself a Poster?

Around this time tomorrow, the books will be closed on CoworkBuffalo's first Kickstarter campaign. It is, as the most underrated magician in The OC might put it, The Final Countdown.

But you've already pledged, right? RIGHT. Even if you did, you can do something free to get more for your pledge by spreading the word about our final drive. Share this deal right here on Facebook, maybe tweet about it, or iMessage a friend and tell them, "Hey, why don't you want me to have a cool letterpress poster? Why are you so down on posters, Peter?"

Together, we can beat Peter Poster-Hater Posluszniak! As you might have seen, if we hit $5,000 before the books close, everybody who backed at $25 or more gets a letterpress-printed poster. You can also upgrade your pledge now to get into that $25-and-up category.

The main reason we have stretch goals is to give the people who visit CoworkBuffalo (including you, with your day pass!) better chairs, tables, and, well, neon signage. We are just $1,400 short of that goal as I write this. That's one person naming a phone booth, and a few others getting some awesome coffee mugs, posters, and stickers.

We're really excited about this campaign and its outcome. If it were not for people like our awesome members, early supporters, and our Kickstarter backers, CoworkBuffalo would not be here, I would have never met Nick or Kevin C., and Magnachef, Fending, and I would probably have started some terrible business instead. Something involving RFID wallets or whatever. Ugh.

Anyways! Make what happens after tomorrow better for yourself by sharing the campaign on Facebook or tweeting. Even if we don't get all the way there, we will likely be able to do something neat for all of you.

While you're doing that, open a new tab and check out our refreshed home page for CoworkBuffalo. It's no longer dark and cryptic, like an X-COM forum from 1995, but light and quirky, like us, after this campaign.

Thank you again for giving us a chance to work on something that isn't work, and build something great in Buffalo, NY.

Oh, and P.S. -- Nick said it wouldn't be a proper update without an animated GIF. So here's how we feel with just 24 hours to go. Don't be like David Spade and Christina Applegate, folks. COMMIT.
