Free Play is a collection of iconic video game themes arranged in classic jazz styles.
(4/17/13: We're announcing most of the tracklist of Free Play! Scroll to the bottom of the page to see what games we're going to be covering on the album!)
“Free Play” is the second installment of contemporary jazz covers from Andrew Allen and Coverville Records. The album will feature Andrew’s arrangements of popular video game themes throughout history. This record is the second release of indie label Coverville Records, run by legendary podcaster and music connoisseur Brian Ibbott.
The recording of the cd is taking place in Franklin, TN at Wildwood Recording Studios. The trio is made up of Andrew Allen (piano), Byron House (bass), and Truman House (drums). “Free Play” will be the first recording done by The Andrew Allen Trio, and promises to be a combination of classic jazz styles, mixed with contemporary melodies.
Frogpants’ Scott Johnson will be returning to create the album artwork for “Free Play”. Andrew and Scott have collaborated before with “Frogpants TV” and Scott’s “Speed Doodle” collection on Youtube.
We will be adding an inserted booklet of artwork to the physical copy of the CD this year. The pieces will be drawn by artist, podcaster, and video game aficionado Brian Dunaway. Each piece will be themed towards each song that is covered of the album. The collection will be available as a package or separately in 5x7 prints.
Our prize tiers have been tailored to provide each backer with a unique experience only available through Kickstarter. Exclusive music tracks, discount swag, and many other great rewards will be available.
We look forward to creating this special collection of jazz video game themes, and we hope you dig it as well!
thanks for your support.
Update: Mar 24 2013
We've had a lot of people ask about a digital-download-only tier. It's something that Andrew and I discussed before the project, and the big issue we both had with it was being able to compete with the prices that Amazon, iTunes and CD Baby will charge, specifically somewhere between $9.99 and $12.99. We'd want to offer the digital-download tier for right around that amount, but in doing so, we risk not being able to fund the project, because of the amount that licensing eats up. If a majority of the people who buy the CD were to buy a digital download at around $10, we simply wouldn't have enough profit to pay for the recording studio, the mastering, licensing, musician costs, etc.
But in talking to Andrew about it, we decided that if we could make sure that the project got funded, we'd be fine with offering digital downloads, so here comes our first stretch goal:
Yes, if you back the project with a pledge of $15 or more, you'll automatically get the digital download added on to your package. And if you're looking for digital download-only? Simply pledge just $15. If we fund, you'll get the digital download. If we don't fund (heaven forbid), you're not out any money.
Thanks for your continued support,

Andrew is wrapping up the arrangements for each of the songs, and as we do that, I'm happy to announce a tracklist for the album. There are a couple of songs we want to keep under wraps, but this image should give you an idea of what you'll be hearing when the album arrives in your hands in July:
Keep an eye on twitter (@coverville), as I'll be revealing specifics about each of the tracks over the next few days as we approach the end of the funding period!
Thanks again for your support!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Paying for the licenses to use the songs found on the album, recording studio time, mastering and production are all monumental tasks with producing an album of this kind. With your support, we will be able to do all of the things needed to create a swingin' video game album for you and your friends!
