Couture is a comic book collection inspired by the most iconic moments in fashion. Drawing from the work of designers from Christian Dior to Hussein Chalayan, writer Dani Colman (Black Jack Ketchum, ODY-C) has written 15 short comics, each inspired by an iconic fashion collection, that will be drawn by some of the most stylish and exciting artists in comics.
Some of the fashion being turned into comics:
- Alexander McQueen's darkly romantic collection The Girl who Lived in a Tree becomes a fairy tale about a girl who climbs an ancient tree to find a lost prince - drawn by the fabulous Jen Bartel!
- Guo Pei's lavish One Thousand and Two Nights collection becomes a modern drama about an elderly socialite seeking wisdom from a fortune teller, but getting something unexpected in the Chinese woman's story - drawn by the talented Justin Greenwood!
- Galliano's beautiful Art Nouveau collection for Dior becomes a magical romance about a painting who comes to life in 1920s Paris - drawn by the accomplished Marguerite Sauvage!
- Elsa Schiaparelli's surreal and whimsical Circus Collection becomes a horror story about Death visiting the circus on the day the Big Top burns - drawn by the amazing Tony Parker!

Why support Couture?
At New York Comic Con 2016, over 400 people packed the room to hear Dani Colman, Robbi Rodriguez, Jen Bartel, Cameron Stewart and Adam Withers talk about how comics are the most stylish and fashion-forward they have ever been, from the diverse contemporary fashion of The Wicked + The Divine to the cool and modern updates to Batgirl and Captain Marvel. Couture is the first book to truly pay homage to the connection between fashion and comics, by using great fashion to create great stories.
By backing Couture, you're helping support something truly unique: a never-before-seen combination of fashion and comics, created by some of the most exciting artists working in comics today. The short stories in Couture span horror, romance, fantasy, mystery and more, but what brings them all together is their celebration of the great art of haute couture. Help us turn this unique idea into a real and beautiful book, and be a part of the creation of Couture!
Just announced: Claudia Balboni is joining Couture!
As if the artists working on Couture weren't amazing enough, we're pleased to announce that Claudia Balboni - who drew the mind-bending miniseries Black Jack Ketchum for Image Comics - will be joining Couture to illustrate one of the stories! Read all about it in this announcement.
As a Kickstarter-exclusive bonus, we're also releasing a digital companion volume called Atelier, only available to Kickstarter backers. Featuring original scripts, "director's commentary" and process pages for every story, Atelier takes you behind the scenes of Couture and shows you how the book was made from start to finish.
The stories in Couture are being drawn by some of the most innovative and celebrated artists working in comics today. From industry veterans like Howard Chaykin to new stars like Jen Bartel, all of the artists involved with Couture are passionate about comics, about fashion, and about exploring what the two art forms can do when they are brought explosively together.
And more to be announced!
When you support Couture, you have the opportunity to pledge for a copy of the book, for comics-themed rewards like prints, postcards and original art, and for exclusive fashion accessories including custom-designed enamel pins from Dani Vulnavia and Get Lapel Pins, and limited-edition jewellery by Optimystical Studios. Check out some of our reward tiers below!
Fully half of the funds are going towards paying the contributors. Couture is lucky enough to have some of the top names in comics contributing story art, and they all deserve to be paid fairly for their work.
After Kickstarter and other fees (~10% of the total), the rest of the money is going towards shipping, printing, and production costs for the book. Couture isn't intended to make a massive profit or to be the start of a publishing empire: all the money we raise is going into creating the most beautiful possible book for our backers.
Risks and challenges
All of the creators working on Couture are experienced comics professionals with plenty of practice hitting deadlines, but delays do happen. We have centralised project management and an expert editor making sure that everyone's deadlines are clear and we can recover from any delays during the creation of the book.
It is always possible that delays may occur during printing or shipping. If this happens, we will work with the printer to fix errors and get the books printed and shipped as quickly as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
