Cosplay Boom is a year-long documentary series exploring the art form and subculture known as cosplay. The series will follow cosplayers around the world as they attend conventions, create their stunning costumes and live their lives.
Ultimately, we want to deliver to the world a unique and in-depth look at the fascinating, vibrant and beautiful new art form and community called cosplay. But with travel, equipment and production costs, we're going to need your help. So please, read on!
WHAT’s IT ABOUT
Cosplay Boom is a documentary about the art of cosplay, the lives of cosplayers and about cosplay fans of all kinds. The film series will follow the inspiring, dramatic and sometimes-humorous journey cosplayers go on as they create their elaborate costumes and show off their art and craft to the world. This is a never-before-seen look at the world of cosplay done in a documentary format.
This docu-series will be about cosplay at its core, but it will also tell a much bigger story about what it means to be an artist, to express yourself, and to have the courage to be yourself. Cosplay Boom is a documentary about finding a community all your own.
The series will take a personal look at cosplayers, prop-makers and costumers from all over world; some who seek fame, some who do it for human connection and some who do it for the love of the art.
Cosplay Boom will introduce viewers to hundreds of cosplayers and show off thousands of costumes as it explores one unique art form; the art of cosplay.
GIVE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT, WHEN THEY WANT IT
You won’t have to wait for Cosplay Boom Season 1; we will release content from the series every day!
Each month, we will release a full episode of Cosplay Boom: The Series. These chapters will cover a specific cosplay topic, convention or cosplay group. And each of these chapters will form a larger, cohesive story.
In addition to the chapters we release every month, each day we will release a video feature on a specific cosplayer, costumer or prop maker so they get a chance to tell their story. By offering interviews and other content on a daily basis, we ensure that nothing important gets left on the cutting room floor.
Of course, all of this video content will be released for free via YouTube, DailyMotion and through our other video channels.
WHO WE ARE
Todd Kenreck – Director & Cinematographer
I’m Todd Kenreck, the director and cinematographer for the Cosplay Boom project. For seven years I covered cosplay, video games, comics and nerd culture as a reporter at Msnbc.com and NBCNews.com with my work also appearing on sites such as Kotaku.com and The Penny Arcade Report. Cosplay has always been a favorite topic of mine because of how passionate and talented everyone in the cosplay community is. To this day, this remains one of my favorite videos of my career:
While making this video, I fell in love with cosplay. And when I had the opportunity to visit Holly Conrad’s creature and costume shop in Los Angeles, I jumped on it. While there, she let me wear her stunning Garrus mask, during what was EASILY my favorite interview I’ve done as a reporter:
I am passionate about cosplay and the community that surrounds it and with Cosplay Boom: The Series, I will share this passion with the world.
Meagan Sadler - Producer
Producer Meagan Sadler has been a professional graphic designer and photo retoucher for over 12 years. (Chances are you’ve seen her work and never even knew it.) Meagan is an avid cosplayer herself and has a passion for cosplay still photography and for composing digital music for cosplay video pieces.
She is the person who brings all the pieces together here at Cosplay Boom with both her dedication and her irrepressible love for cosplay.
THE BATTLE PLAN
We will fly across North America and beyond to interview cosplayers and shoot footage of them at conventions, in their studios and in their homes. We will use high-quality cameras and gear – you can see just how good this looks in our pitch videos on this page. The funds we are asking for in our Kickstarter campaign will cover production, travel and convention costs; cameras, editing equipment, lighting gear, etc.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Cosplayers have an incredible amount of enthusiasm and artistic talent and we want to meet that same passion half way with an equally dedicated documentary that shows what cosplay and cosplayers are all about. To do that we need funds to pay for equipment, travel expenses and other production costs so we can make Cosplay Boom Season One the show that you deserve.
We appreciate your support and please tell all your friends and their friends about this project on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and whatever social platform you enjoy. Thank you!
$20,000 More Stories: We can hire an additional videographer for the year to cover more conventions so we don’t miss a thing.
$30,000 Cosplay Boom Music: We can afford to hire a composer to create original and more evocative music pieces to accompany our videos.
$50,000 Cosplay Boom Booth: Video interview booth for interviewing cosplayers and for meeting fans and supporters of the project at conventions around the world.
$75,000 Power to the Cosplayers: We put cameras into the hands of the cosplayers themselves! We will send high quality cameras to key cosplayers in the community so they can chronicle their cosplay-making process and share their personal thoughts. Selected cosplayers will then send their behind-the-scenes footage back to us to add to Cosplay Boom: Season 1.

Risks and challenges
We've been producing videos for over 16 years, so we have a lot of experience making a project like this successful. However, we are shooting this series over the course of a year at several conventions around the world and a lot can happen in that time. Equipment breaking, loss of footage and personal accidents can set productions back. This is a demanding project, but we are up to the task.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
