Campaign Trail (Canceled)
Campaign strategy in a fun, fast-paced game! Travel, advertise, campaign, fundraise, and more as you race to become the next president!
Undead Viking says ...
"The game itself is amazing!"
"They’ve done a heck of a good job in the play style, the mechanism, the presentation, and flat out fun"
Welcome to Campaign Trail, the game that lets you plot your strategy, manage your resources, and run your campaign to become the next President of the United States!
Campaign Trail has been decades in the making; the original concept of the game was designed by our dad before either of us were born and we remember playing it with him when we were just kids. When we founded Cosmic Wombat Games, one of our main goals was to bring our dad’s vision to life. We have been developing Campaign Trail for the past four years, taking it from hand-drawn cards and posterboard to a rich, thematic experience with beautiful components and engaging gameplay. Please join us in this journey as we seek to realize our dad’s dream of sharing Campaign Trail with the boardgame community!

- Why Kickstarter?
At its heart, Campaign Trail is a strategy game. Players will use card-driven actions to engage in advertising, campaigning, fundraising, and many other political essentials in order to win electoral votes. The elements of Campaign Trail are all relevant to modern-day politics but designed in a way that players do not need to take sides on issues and engage in traditional debate, making for an enjoyable experience that preserves friendships and family relationships!
Campaign Trail combines area control, resource management, variable player powers, and engine building to give the players the experience of managing a real political campaign. The multi-use cards make it all about strategic hand management, as only one of the four actions outlined on each card may be used. You must decide if you will use a card for fundraising, or would the advertise action better suit your campaign? Should you play a card’s event action now, or hold onto it for a while to better take advantage of its results? Don’t forget to keep an eye on your registered voter supply and your opponent’s campaign actions!

What makes Campaign Trail unique?
What's in the box?
With all the stuff we are including in this game, the MSRP will likely be set to $65. However, we want to offer you a special deal as a thanks for putting your trust in us and backing our Kickstarter campaign. You can get the game for only $54 through this Kickstarter campaign! That's 17% off MSRP!
Note: This 17% off price will only be offered for the duration of this Kickstarter campaign.
"Never have I played a game that offered so much different strategy and methods of play in such a simple to learn game" ~ Levi Bushue
"Back it, eagerly await that shipping notification, and have a blast with one of the best games you will play this election year."
"I am being completely honest when I say Campaign Trail is my favorite game this year – published, unpublished, video or tabletop, independent or not." ~ Andrew Smith
We want to offer a very simple reward structure. You can get just the game, or you can get the game and also influence its content in 1 of 2 ways. Additionally, you can bundle multiple copies together to save on shipping. Check out our rewards below:
Shipping charge will be added to your pledge automatically at checkout.
SUPER PAC Level:
Give us your best Super PAC name - "Gamers For The Ethical Treatment of Meeples", "League of Extraordinary Yellow Pawns", etc and we'll put it on a card!
We want your input! Give us a name and a character description and our artist will base a character off of your input. You can also submit a few photos as the basis for your character as well. We're looking for characters with diverse backgrounds and features. Is your character a sitting Senator, is she a renowned doctor? Maybe he's the first Native American to run for president. We would love to hear all your ideas.
Note that the Candidate tier is limited to 10 female and 10 male backers. The candidate cards will be double sided with a male character on one side and a female character on the other side (the same abilities will be on both sides). Anyone can back at these levels, just keep in mind that you will be submitting the character description for that gender.
We are offering the ability to bundle some games together to save on shipping. So find a couple friends and go in together to save some money!
Retail store owners, we would love to have you on board. We are offering competitive pricing for verified retailers. Please email email@example.com for information on how to make a retailer pledge.
We are going to play Campaign Trail during the Kickstarter campaign! Just like in Campaign Trail, we are trying to get voters in states. We are working toward getting a number of backers (at the VOTER level or higher) in each state equal to or greater than that state's electoral vote total.
If we can color in every state on this map (each state will be colored in as the goal for that state is achieved), we will give you all a set of 3 (one for each party) plastic storage containers for your Campaign Trail bits.
These are 5.4" x 4" x 0.75" and will fit inside our Campaign Trail box. This will make setup and gameplay so much easier since all you will have to do is remove the plastic containers from the game box and distribute them to the players.
So, make sure your state is in your Kickstarter profile! Get your friends from all over the country to come out and give us their vote! Throughout the campaign we will be checking our backers profiles and updating this map with our progress.
We want to connect with you! To that end we have created a social media goal for this project. If we hit the following numbers in these social media areas we will release to all our backers a companion scoring app for Campaign Trail that you will be able to use on your phone.
- Facebook - 1,000 "likes"
- Mailing LIst - 1,125 subscribers
- Twitter - 1,750 followers
- BGG box cover art - 125 "thumbs"
We really like the state of the game design for Campaign Trail. It has been play tested hundreds of times and refined over the last 4 years. As a result we will not be adding any new mechanics to the game through stretch goals.
However, we do want to provide additional value to you as we raise more money, so we are going to upgrade your games. We have many different upgrades in mind that we will reveal throughout the course of the campaign, starting with some additional art pieces and giving you larger cards!
Check out our Stretch Goal ballot below:
These upgrades and more (revealed over the course of the campaign) will be added to every copy of Campaign Trail that is printed. We will not be doing Kickstarter exclusives on this project except for your opportunity to get this game at 17% off MSRP through this Kickstarter!
Some of you may be asking, "Why should I back you on Kickstarter now and not wait for retail? What is in it for me?" Here is why we are asking for your pledge now and what you can get by pledging now.
- This game will not be made without your support. We will not be able to print this game without achieving our funding goal here.
- You get 17% off MSRP for this campaign only! This price will never be offered again!
- An opportunity to influence the course of the game. We will be doing backer polls on which upgrades to add through stretch goals.
- An opportunity to help create game content. You can create a character through our CANDIDATE level and card flavor text through our SUPER PAC level.
We have chosen to work with Darrenn Canton to create the art for this game. Darrenn is an immensely talented artist that does beautiful watercolor work. When we first saw his work, we fell in love with his anthropomorphic animal characters and knew we wanted him to create the face of Campaign Trail.
Darrenn will be creating political cartoon-esque characters (similar to that shown above) to bring to life the setting and flavor of Campaign Trail that will be shown on the box, in the rulebook, and throughout various other locations in the game. He will be also creating the candidate images from inputs given by our backers at the CANDIDATE level.
Risks and challenges
First of all, we want to thank you for putting your trust in us to get you this game. We do understand that with Kickstarter, much of the risk is placed on the backer. We intend to make sure that you receive your reward in a timely manner.
The biggest challenges for this project will be potential production delays and shipping. Due to the complex nature of the components, there is a chance that production delays may occur. Because we are using a third-party for production, many things will be out of our control in the event of production delays. We are taking every precaution possible to reduce the risk of delays and have been in communication with our printer for several months. We have already discussed some of the more complicated components of the game, such as the scoring track and the war chest dials, and have been assured that these items should not cause issues during production.
Secondly, there is the shipping piece of the project. Shipping caused some problems for us in our previous Kickstarter campaign for Stones of Fate because we did not plan adequately for the expenses involved. Despite the delays, we successfully fulfilled all of the rewards for Stones of Fate and kept our backers informed throughout the process. We have learned from our past and have taken steps this time to ensure that we do not repeat these same problems. We will be working with Shipwire to manage the shipping process and have already begun our dialogue with them to make sure that it goes smoothly.
We will do our best to get you your game in a timely manner. As always if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We will respond to all questions both during and after the campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
