About

Time is actually a lot like a river. If you screw a river up, it ruins the rest of the land by finding a new path. When time gets broken, you need to send in a Zoetrope squad. You need to send us.

 A card-based TTRPG made for one shots, Zoetrope puts you in the shoes of a Zoetrope team, working for the Talon government organization. Zoetrope technology lets you time travel back to moments that have been altered in some way, and then it's your team’s job to fix it. Managing action economy and time manipulation with cards, your group must find the best way to fix their problem. But don’t worry if you screw up, you always have another chance.

Zoetrope fully supports serious play if that's your goal, but time shenanigans and roleplay focused games can really push a fun and silly experience if you let them. Give it a try!
 

    Zoetrope is a card game at its core, even if the majority of the game is roleplay. Players are given Role cards that determine how many Action, Time, and Gear cards they get. The Story Leader then reveals a card from the Event Deck to determine what anomaly needs fixing. From there, players are sent back in time to deal with the problem however they can.
     To take an action that will affect the world, players place down cards to utilize their Actions, such as to make an attack, to make a successful social play, or even to sneak past someone. If they need tools, they have Gear cards, including communicators, weapons, and time-aura detectors, and so much more. If they screw up? They can play a Recur card to go back to their latest Savepoint. If they need to just undo the most recent issue, they have a number of other options to rewind the game with Time cards.
     Cards are placed on the table in a line called the Timeline, ensuring that all players know the order of events, and making it clear what actions are undone if rewinding time. The Story Leader acts in this game just as a GM would in any other TTRPG, being the arbitrator of how actions unfold, and how the world reacts. It is a core need that the Story Leader stick a wrench in player plans from time to time. After all, what’s the point of being able to rewind time if you don’t have good reason to do it?

PLAYTEST PRINT AND PLAY
     This game is actually completely done, I'm finalizing the work on the expansions during the campaign, but the core game is fully ready to be bought. You can get the rules for the game and a print+play, older artless version of the cards now, and you can check out the final look for the game below. Keep in mind the old print+play version is set up for the original version of the game, which featured 300~ cards. The finalized core game features a paired down and more focused 180, with additional 54 themed card-decks available in stretch goals!

     I also rely greatly on a core group of friends whom I can bounce ideas off of, and who have been incredibly helpful for continuing my work. I want to acknowledge Spencer Abbe for all his awesome running of the game at Gencon, as well as Noah S. Brown, Deidra Hong, Caeth Eri, and Kat Veldt for their contributions and kindness, and especially their patience! 

     We are aiming at 2k to fund the first printing of this game. Because I'm doing everything for the game, from layout to design to illustrations, the money earned beyond printing and shipping from this Kickstarter is going to both ordering a few extra decks as a backstock to give out at cons and for other promotions, and towards collecting funds for our big game books, which are held up right now due to funding difficulties. You are directly helping me make more and more games.

 We are also looking to hit stretch goals in order to fund the 4 additional planned expansions for the game, all of which I am also making. The majority of them are complete, they are being finalized with art during this Kickstarter.

Special for the Kickstarter, the Exo Genesis expansion is available from the start as a 10$ add on. It won't go up for sale with the core game for six months, so get it early here!


       All our Print decks and books are fulfilled through DrivethruRPG.

      While Zoetrope is up on Kickstarter right now, we've recently put out three other Genesis Engine games, perfect for one-shots, which you can find on DrivethruRPG. We're also working on two other games, Secret Halls and Atrocity Archives, with hopes to do another two Kickstarters for them this year after Zoetrope is funded and shipped out.

Because I'm doing all the work for both those books, just as I'm doing all the work on Zoetrope, I can run the Kickstarters with finished products ready to go and ship once money is received. So you can look out for two more full games for release this year. With Dogs the Gaem, Zoetrope, Secret Halls, and Atrocity Archives, that's a solid 4 games released in one year-- and I can do it with your help.

When we reach the end of the year, I am looking to begin funding for the big game books, but I can only do it with your financial support of these smaller games. Please pledge your support today for a brighter and more game-filled tomorrow!
 

Also, the core game is done. As in, done, done. There are no risks with the core game! The expansions are being finished as we go along the Kickstarter, so it should all be ready to ship the second that the money comes in from the Kickstarter. Check it out:

Risks and challenges

The only risk or challenge is simply that the Kickstarter fails. We've already faced that before, and know that it's most definitely not an ending, but a chance to start again.
With the card game already done and put together, the only thing left to complete are the expansions, and we'll finish them as the stretch goals are unlocked.
