//INITIATING DOG PROTOCOL
Welcome to Dogs the Gaem!
In this game experience, players engage in play as dogs in a world that was only partially programmed before the creator died. Each day, the humans walk to the edge of their strangely suburban homes amidst a massive and endless jungle, then disappear at the edge of the road. At this time, the sentience that those humans should have is transferred to the closest available vessel. To each home's dog.
Because god is literally dead in this world, players must exchange control of power. In this Hot-Potato-GM system, players each pilot a dog on their mission to accomplish dog things. This can be going out to go potty, burying a bone, or taking down the local pet store. You know, dog things. The player who has most recently pet a dog starts with the human token. They narrate a scene with their dog, and then each other player joins in, with the human token wielding player acting as GM. After the immediate scene ends, the human token is handed to the player on the left. This continues around the table until the original wielder gains the token once more.
Then the //RED PHASE begins.
Up until the //RED PHASE, players are free to accomplish any task they want by flipping a coin. Using their front end or tail end powers (strong bites, growls, etc for front, or good aim, stinky farts, etc for tail), players flip a coin (or roll 1d6) to achieve any action they want. Dogs always succeed, it's just a matter of what end they succeed with. Dogs have Hit Pets, but like most of the numbers on the supplied character sheets, they don't actually matter to the dogs. Until the //RED PHASE.
When the //RED PHASE begins, the character sheets become incredibly important. The world takes on a slightly red tinge, and the endless jungle sprawl, the mailmen, and the world at large becomes suddenly dangerous. Previously silly abilities become weapons. This is when the trickster cats engage. Faulty and unfinished programs, cats in this world are near-omnipotent, when they aren't freezing and rebooting. They seek to make life difficult for the dogs, but often do so by going for the kill.
The good news is that when the //RED PHASE ends (when the current action scene ends or is resolved), even dogs who die get to have another go at things. They restart their character sheet as puppies. At the end of each day, the humam comes back from wherever they disappear to, and they regain their sentience, converting the dogs into normal good boys and girls.
While game sessions are intended to end after //RED PHASE, play groups can choose to continue onward with their game as long as they wish, working together to build up a larger and larger story.
The most pressing question on every dog's mind is where their humam goes. Can you find out?
//LAUNCHING CAT PROTOCATCATATATTACATCATTATATAGGATCCGATACAT
Tucked away within the Dogs the Gaem book will also be THE CAT PROTOCOL game, allowing games to jump back and forth between playing as dogs and playing as cats, building up separate narratives about finding the hidden truth that your dead god left behind about the nature of your world and the worlds beyond it.
Money is being raised to get prints of the books alone, all art will be done lovingly in MS Paint and with stock photo editing. Also because the dogs just randomly hit the keyboard for the game's funding goal.
If we hit $700, I will put together a companion deck of cards for the //RED PHASE that will give you random occurrences for what happens during that time, as well as specific threats. The book will have suggestions and a small randomized table for rolling dice to determine what happens, but the deck will smooth it out and leave less work to the hot-potato-GM to run the experience.
If we hit $1,000, check back here for more fun things!
Risks and challenges
No challenges. I've made and delivered games and books before with no issue. You will have an awesome and ridiculous book in your hands by late March 2019.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
