Confluence - Cosmic Mirror Games Core Rulebook
10 Worlds. 1 Game. Endless Possibilities. Confluence is the core rulebook for the Cosmic Mirror Games settings and systems.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Wed, August 29 2018 4:53 PM UTC +00:00.
10 Worlds, 1 Game. In Confluence, players will take up the roles of denizens who have come from these disparate worlds, thrown together into one world of ancient history and extreme technology. Each of the 10 playable races brings a unique experience from their own game worlds, and each comes with their own levels of difficulties, allowing experienced players to play alongside new players while facing different difficulty levels in character creation and management.
With 10 core races and 40 NPC races, as well as unique items, technology, equipment, and magic from each of the worlds, Confluence is a world made to be explored. You can play a horror game with the undead hordes of the 7th Era, engage in political intrigue with the beings of the 12th, and hunt down ancient relics of incredible power from the 13th. Will you fall into worship of the Fallen Gods, or will you find power from the being that resides within the world itself? Your journey awaits.

Past Kickstarter: We want to be forward. Confluence had an attempted Kickstarter back in June last year, where it was paired up with two of our small book games. The Kickstarter failed, but we didn’t stop for a second. Work continued, art kept coming in, and we’re coming back stronger than ever.
Confluence is the core rulebook for a series of game books set to come out each year. It also acts as the core setting. Future books will rely on these core mechanics as expounded upon in the Confluence book, but will offer new worlds and settings, along with new races, items, magic systems, and much more. Because this core setting is made up of elements from the other worlds, each of these new setting books will be backwards compatible, all their contents usable in the core world. The book is slated to reach 650 pages.
The core of Confluence is built on a simple d6 dice pool system. To perform an action, you will add your relevant Attribute to any relevant Specialty your character has for the particular action. You then roll that many d6, and succeed on 5’s and 6’s. Unique race powers, character traits such as Talents and Abilities, and a wide array of item options from across the worlds enhance and enjoyably complicate the game for players, and help make each game new and exciting.
What’s in here?
This game book is actually at your fingertips to give a look over right now. The playtest copy contains all the elements needed to pick up and play right now, including all the information needed to create any of the 10 unique character races, unique character traits to help set your character further apart, as well as 20 pages of item options to ensure you are properly equipped for your journey. Information on combat and survival are here in their entirety as well, letting your group pick up and play from this playtest document alone. In addition, the book looks ahead at the variety of offerings still in store for World information, continent and city descriptions, additional NPCs, monsters, and more. There is a lot of info missing from this copy, over half the book, but that's to make sure that there's plenty of worthwhile stuff for you to still find ahead in the final version!
To ensure the world feels real, alive, and expansive, it has been beautifully mapped with the use of the Inkarnate program. Additional area maps are still forthcoming, ensuring that even a game that remains in one area or around one city will be able to find plenty to engage players for many games. Additionally, information on each city and area of the world, as well as towns and cities are described in the book that can be set anywhere in a particular region, ensuring your players always have a place to rest their head, or find a new story hook.
We is actually just a me. I’m Dane Asmund, and I’m the writer, coordinator, designer, and so much more for the Cosmic Mirror Games. These worlds all stem from a core idea of a novel I wrote back in 2012: One world, 14 Eras. Confluence is the summation of the 10 playable worlds collapsing in on eachother.
I rely on the amazing artists I have found to inspire me with their amazing work. This year alone, I have Aizel, Jack Baker, Bethany Berg, Noah S. Brown, Cellusious, Claudiu, Nathan Evans, Weston T. Jones, Marek Jarocki, Midmah, Pythos Art, Bobby Rebholz, Natasha Pashkovsky, and Kat Veldt to thank for their contributions. Their amazing work has reinvigorated the project, always interesting me with their designs and breathing life into this burgeoning work. Andrew Jaxling and Nicholas Spence have been instrumental to redesigning the visual aesthetic of the book as well, and incredible thanks go out to them. Spire Eaton and Dreamy Star have also been incredibly helpful for creating and designing logos and icons.
I also rely greatly on a core group of friends whom I can bounce ideas off of, and who have been incredibly helpful for continuing my work. I want to acknowledge Spencer Abbe, Noah S. Brown, De Hong, Caeth Miller, and Kat Veldt for their contributions and kindness, and especially their patience!
We have put in a great deal of work and money into the book, and even had a small GoFundMe after the last Kickstarter to collect some of the funds put forth there. Altogether, we have pulled together over $4000 worth of art into the book so far. But it is far from done.
The core goal of the Kickstarter is to fund the rest of the art. The book will remain in a print-on-demand format on Drivethrurpg, and funds will only be used to fulfill Kickstarter backer rewards, rather than creating a large print run. This Kickstarter is special because it isn’t about printing the game to get it out there, it’s crowdfunding an integral portion of the book to complete it. In this way, we are finishing the book together.
Our stretch goals are as follows
15k - Primary Goal
16k - Umbra & Mirn Options Document (Because Umbra & Mirn was our very first book, we feel we could update its look and its content to offer a neat little PDF of updated race options and items. It will have a second edition release in the future to bring it up to speed with Confluence either way.)
18k - City Illustrations (These large city illustrations are being done by Weston Jones, an incredible landscape artist.)
20k - Artifacts & Magic (A fully illustrated section of 40 artifacts and various magic options for players.)
22k - Introductory Art for the Races (These will be full and large illustrations for each of the core 10 races that help give a feel for their world.)
24k - Expanded World (More NPCs for some of the towns and cities, as well as a few town and city maps.)
30k - Binoculars (Additional, more detailed country maps)
40k - Game Options (Add ons will now include a Story Leader screen, Confluence dice, and some race and power cards)
50k - Race Compendium (An entire additional book, the Race Compendium will be an expansion book with additional options for each of the 10 core races, as well as basic player options for every other NPC race shown in Confluence, as well as new NPCs. Featuring new art, this book will be an incredible supplement, offering many new options for players and Story Leaders alike.)
60k - Greater Game (Another expansion book, Greater Game will offer a full look into five additional player races with more options (and unique options from) the Race Compendium companion book. Additionally, the book will be chock full of giant monsters from the various worlds that will act as unique boss creatures, as well as end-game player options, including rules for crafting, and for investing money and running shops, towns, and cities!)
80k, 100k, 120k - Early Art Acquiring for the next books, Mortalis, Labyrinthea, and Exo-Genesis. This means we can sink a solid 10k into each book's early art, setting us up for an easier Kickstarter!
Some people are curious what the standard vs premium color hardcopies means. It's a Drivethru RPG distinction having to do with the color quality. https://support.drivethrurpg.com/hc/en-us/articles/209936943 It's not a super big difference, until you see them side by side, but it costs a fair bit more to print.
All our PDF and Print books are fulfilled from DrivethruRPG
For $8 a piece, you can add on a PDF of our standalone, small games NuAEther and Generations. Note: You can get the NuAEther and Generations PDFs for just $5 if you bump your pledge on the proper day! I will warn backers a week ahead of time, so be ready.
For $20 you can add on a standard color hardcopy of either of the above mentioned games.
For $40 you can add on a soft-cover hard copy of Confluence.
For $50 you can add on an additional hard copy of Confluence.
For $5 you can add on the cover and world map posters. Note: Backers who pledged at least $25 or higher on the first day get the posters for free.
While Confluence is up on Kickstarter right now, we have just wrapped up fulfillment on our NuÆther Kickstarter here, and our Generations Kickstarter here. There is one more project nearing readiness for a Kickstarter in the future, and there are many other projects in various states as is, as well as a novel coming in October set in the world of Mortalis, the 7th Era of the Cosmic Mirror!
There is a special purpose to us at Cosmic Mirror Games, and that is to tell the story of the Cosmic Mirror, that flat world where Confluence takes place. Each year we hope to release a setting book of one of the worlds, from the 4th Era on to the 14th. In this way, we will expand everything offered in the Confluence book, offer new worlds to play in, and retroactively grant so many new options to the Confluence book itself. It is our hope to also put together further Confluence books to expand on this unique world, including expansion books that will bring in races and unique options from our side line of games, the Genesis Engines.
Additionally, our first book, Umbra & Mirn, will be fully updated and offered for free to anyone who bought our original run of it. This update and expansion will greatly rehaul the look and feel of the book, the rules offered there, and bring them in line with the new core system founded in Confluence.
Please join us on this journey. We have so much more to bring you, and we're plotting it out each day, step by step.
Risks and challenges
The only risk or challenge is simply that the Kickstarter fails. We've already faced that before, and know that it's most definitely not an ending, but a chance to start again.
While work still remains to be done on the book, it is being done in tandem with additional playtesting, to ensure the book will be 100% ready for print. There are zero concerns on our end about finishing the book on time, and our track record should show we are always on time with our completed products.
- All gone!
