Cosmic Balance is a hybrid board/card game of battling gods, angels, and demons for 2-5 players. It takes under an hour to play. Your cards become the fighting units that conquer and control territories. Since you're a god you decide whether to send defeated cards to the Heaven discard pile or the Hell discard pile! The discard piles sit on a scale that measures how many defeated enemies have been sent to Heaven or Hell. Tip the scales and open the gates of Hell or Heaven. You get Victory Points from each territory you control at the end of your turn plus bonus points from Angel and Demon cards. The player with the most Victory Points at the end wins!
Lastly if funded, this will be our 4th published game! Our previous game, Curses, won the Mensa Select award and our other game, Angel Quest - The Random Acts of Kindness Cards landed us on the Montel Williams Show as the "kindest family in America." We can't wait to see where Cosmic Balance takes us!
An amazingly illustrated board! Lars went a little nuts on this thing. This is one of the most detailed game boards we've ever seen. It's 31 inches by 20 inches. (78cm x 51cm) and fits perfectly in the game box.
An original concept! As far as we can tell, this is the first game ever to use a scale to track how many dead cards are in two discard piles. There's also a couple hundred cards, 60 resource counters, 28 battle tokens, and 50 influence tokens.
A Kickstarter Exclusive! 7 Knight cards, 5 Shield Tokens plus the God of Protection card available only to Kickstarter backers. (See Update #5 for more details.)

On your turn you have three actions. Spend your actions to draw Mortal cards from your deck or play your Mortal cards from your hand on to any of the board's eight territories. At the end of your turn score one Victory Point for each territory your Mortals control plus bonus points from Angel and Demon cards. The player with the most Victory Points at the end of the game wins.
Cards, like the below Giant, destroy your enemies and keep control of your territories. You have to spend Good or Evil to play them from your hand. But where do you get this Good or Evil?
Your Peasant cards (seen above) generate Good for you when you send them to the nice parts of the board. Likewise, you earn Evil for sending the hapless Peasants to the icky nasty parts of the board, where there is only death and Brussels sprouts. Then you can spend this Good and Evil to play the more powerful mortal cards from your hand, such as Vampires, Knights, and aforementioned hangry Giants.
There's also a game zone called The Beyond. Cards in The Beyond are face up and available for all players to purchase. You can summon powerful Angels and Demons from The Beyond when you save up enough Good or Evil, but they cost a lot more.
Whenever one of your cards kills an enemy on the board, you decide whether to send that enemy to Heaven or Hell, located on the Cosmic Balance scale.
If more cards end up in Heaven, that side tips down, and the Gates of Heaven open. Whenever you open Heaven or Hell you get an additional action for that turn. If you are clever you can use this to re-balance and re-open the gates for even more actions.
While Heaven is open, all Angels in The Beyond cost half the normal amount of Good and you can summon them to defeat even more enemies and conquer more territories! Same with tipping down Hell and opening the way for Demons to stomp the faces of your enemies. Angels and Demons are freakin' powerful compared to the other units. They will often hit the board and kill something to help you tip the scales yet again. Angels and Demons also get you extra VP at the end of each of your turns.
You'll have 2 different God Powers every game. At the beginning of the game, each player chooses 2 of the 15 God Power cards, such as Greed, Blood, Protection, or Wind. Each of these powers determines which factions will go in your deck, so there are countless combinations. (Well, 15 factions have 105 possible pairings, so we're just going to call that countless.) Each God Power card also has a unique base ability that you can combine and use throughout the game. Some examples:
Which two of these God Powers would you choose?
- God of Hunger: Whenever you destroy a non-Peasant enemy, gain 1 extra victory. Start with the Wolves faction in your deck.
- God of Prosperity: Draw an extra card on each of your turns. Start with the Merchants faction in your deck.
- God of Wind: On each of your turns you may move any card to a different territory. Start with the Eagles faction in your deck.
As a god, you can hear all the secret thoughts and prayers of the mortal cards in your deck. Although it won't affect the game's outcome, you can have fun granting the prayers of your followers. Or you can crush them and send them to Hell! That's the great part about being a god. You get to judge mortals and they can't judge you!
We're Alexandra Tinsman and Brian Tinsman, the creators of Cosmic Balance. We've spent the past 20 years helping to craft legendary tabletop gaming experiences (including favorites such as Magic:The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Duel Masters, Curses, Risk, and Pokémon) which has prepared us for the launch of this game. Lars Nielsen is the artist and Claudia Ng is the engineer.
Alex has spent her career in marketing and product development for top game brands including: Riot Games (League of Legends), Microsoft (Xbox, Halo, Minecraft), Wizards of the Coast (Magic:The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons), Pokémon, Hasbro (Star Wars, Avalon Hill), and Gen Con.
Brian is an award-winning game designer with over 37 shipped game titles (including lead game design on 8 Magic:The Gathering sets, including Rise of the Eldrazi, Avacyn Restored, and Time Spiral.) He's also the author of The Game Inventor's Guidebook and has secured multiple new gameplay mechanic patents.
Lars Nielsen is our lead artist. His unique art style has made him a favorite among gamers and indie comics fans. He's also the progeny of renowned Magic artist, Terese Nielsen, and has spent his life immersed in gaming culture. You may even recognize him from the Magic card, Samite Elder.
Claudia Ng is the owner and creator of Succulent Monsters, the cutest 3D printed monster planters on the internets. She is also the engineer of the Cosmic Balance device. She invented the physical mechanism that allows us to adjust how many cards are needed to tip the balance.
With your support, this game will continue to grow as we develop new content over time. Like a good living card game, it's built to support an almost unlimited number of new factions and god powers.
You can already customize your play experience by selecting a subset of Angels and Demons in The Beyond to provide a faster or slower game, and this will get better over time as we release more cards, god powers, and Angels/Demons.
With these new card releases we'll include some suggested faction combinations so you can maximize the influence of player skill or have a wacky, highly swingy game for your friends that enjoyed the Transformers movies - a lot of exciting action as long as you don't think too hard.
We continue to add new countries but for now we our shipping costs are:
- $10 USD to USA
- $15 USD to Europe and Canada
- $22 USD to Switzerland
- $29 USD to Australia
- $30 USD to New Zealand
- $30 USD to Singapore
- $22 USD to Switzerland
- $37 USD to Brazil
- $37 USD to Israel
- $22 USD to Cyprus
- $29 USD to Japan

Alex was brand manager for Magic: The Gathering and Brian was lead designer on 8 Magic expansion sets. Magic’s use of the graveyard as a semi-active game zone inspired the idea for a board game where players could use the discard pile to affect battles on the board and use the weight of dead cards to measure the carnage. After a lot of prototyping we developed the Cosmic Balance device. Watch the video to learn our prototype journey for the Cosmic Balance scale!
Check out how Claudia uses her 3D printer to make the prototypes for the Cosmic Balance scale!
FUN FACT: Alex first met Lars in 2001 when he was 8 years old hanging out with his mom, Terese, at the Magic Pro Tour LA on the "haunted" Queen Mary boat/hotel. They've been friends ever since.
Here's a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the gameboard art concept. This board has an exceptionally high level of detailed illustration!
You can make this game even better by being part of our community and discussing the countless small decisions that go into making a strategy board game. What are the best cards? What's the funniest flavor text? How could the rule book be clearer? Are there card interactions not covered in the FAQ? Which card is most overpowered?
All this stuff is super important to making a high quality game that you'll be proud to have on your sacred gaming table.
Welcome to our tribe.
Risks and challenges
Every board game carries risks in budgeting, manufacturing, quality control, packouts, and shipping on time. Though this is our first Kickstarter we've created dozens of published tabletop games so we understand these risks well.
The biggest risk in most Kickstarter board games is game play quality. How often will you want to play it again? We're highly focused on this issue and we will not release it until the gameplay passes the highest quality bar according to our panel of experienced designers.
This game has a simple base system with a lot of complex content that we'll need to carefully balance for strategic fairness and replayability. Almost all of our playtest criticism has centered on card and power balance, which we will continue to refine even after funding.
Though our theme is lighthearted, there's a powerful engine under the hood. When we worked on Magic: the Gathering expansions we did a great job of balance tuning (with a lot of help) and they turned out to be some of the best selling sets ever. Though this is much simpler than that game we are trying to achieve a similar quality result here. Our success or failure will mean the difference between good and great.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
