About this project

What is "The Tyler Smith Project?"

"The Tyler Smith Project" is a Documentary Short film that focuses on amateur body builder Tyler Smith as he trains and prepares for his biggest show to date. At it's core, "The Tyler Smith Project" is a deep look into the world that is bodybuilding. There are no punches pulled here. This is a real look at the high cost of being a competitive body builder. In this documentary we follow Tyler day to day as he puts in work over a two month period leading up to his show.

The title "The Tyler Smith Project" is a working title for the movie as it is still in production. We have not yet settled on a final name, however, we figured that "The Tyler Smith Project" worked on two levels. It works because of this movie being about Tyler Smith the body builder. Yet, on another level it characterizes Tyler, the main focus, because he is in himself, a project as he works and builds himself before his competition.

Who is Tyler Smith?

Tyler Smith is an amateur body builder from a small town in New York. He is currently a student at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. Tyler is not a professional body builder, he does not carry any endorsements and pays for everything out of the pocket. He competes for the love of the sport and his own dream to one day get his pro card and make a living doing what he loves.

Inspiration for the movie

Tyler is my roommate and one of my best friends. Early on this year he came to me and asked me to make him a short promo video to help get his body building career some attention. A short promo video to get attention of some bigger name sponsors. Of course I jumped a the chance to help out a friend while also making an interesting promotional piece. Slowly, the five minute piece we set out to make evolved into what will become a short documentary (hopefully 30 minutes to an hour). As I began to view my friend through the lens of the camera I saw someone different. Not only was he the big goofball I lived with, I also saw who he was on a competitive level. I saw him working day to day. Eating six or more meals a day, counting every calorie, just to make sure his body is working at its highest potential. Watching him lift at the gym until he is ready to pass out.

I became inspired. I wanted the world to see how hard he works; not just for Tyler but for every other body builder at his level. I want to make a film for every amateur that needs to work that much harder because of the level they are at. It takes much more than dedication. These guys need to work at a level higher than normal. They balance day jobs, school work, day to day life, expenses, and their body building. It requires dedication, sacrifice, blood, sweat, and tears; all just to make their one dream come true and compete at a higher level.
