About This Project

In October 2017, we published The Corners of Their Mouth: A Queer Food Zine, Volume 1: part cookbook, part comic, 100% queer. In volume 1, we welcomed you into our queer kitchen. In volume 2, we visit our queer friends’ kitchens through recipes, comics, poetry, and essays.

Issue 2 of The Corners of Their Mouth includes contributions from friends who graciously agreed to support our project. It’s also a test-run: if this run goes well, then Issue 3 will have an open call for submissions. We want to provide a space for queer folks, especially non-monosexual (bi, pan, queer, etc.) and gender diverse (transgender, nonbinary, agender, intersex, etc.) individuals to share not just their recipes but their queer food discourse, their art, and their personal stories of how food shows up in their lives and their communities. We believe in compensation for the physical and emotional labor of producing content, especially for marginalized creators; it’s of vital importance to us that our contributors get paid something for their work.

In this Volume

  • A comic about queer expats and a giant rice-cooker pancake
  • Easy, practical recipes for your life
  • Recipes for Queer Nihilism
  • A comic collab about food and Queer Angst™
  • Risograph cover by PaperPressPunch; art by Robin Elan

The contributions for this zine are already in, and we’re moving into the editing stage. We hope to send the final draft to print by summer 2019. We use a local risograph printer to keep our money in the community and to create beautiful covers that highlight our work and Robin’s art.

What You're Funding

This is where you come in! We need your help to cover our printing costs and help pay our contributors. For our past zine projects, we paid the cost of printing and materials out of pocket. All our profits went back into paying for reprints and materials and into seeding future projects. Removing the barrier of the upfront cost would allow us more financial freedom, including the ability to pay ourselves something for our labor, as well as the ability to ethically include other contributors and pay them at comparable rates to other indie publishers.

We believe strongly that queer folks ought to be paid for our work. A portion of the funds will be used to pay our contributors.

We plan to have this volume printed at the same studio that printed The Corners of Their Mouth 1 and The Queer Language of Flowers. They’ve done great work  printing Robin’s art, and we want to keep our money in the small business economy of Seattle. Printing  is the bulk of our costs.

Stretch Goals

  • $950 = Bigger print run (est. 200 copies) and paying our contributors more!
  • $1000 = A website for The Corners of Their Mouth Press, which will provide a centralized location for future issues.
  • $1700 = Launch party budget (venue, food/catering, banquet permit, etc.)

About Us

We’re a bisexual nonbinary artist-writer couple located in Seattle. Robin (they/them) is an artist, writer, and enthusiastic home cook; their pick for “queerest food” is soup because, like queer family, it’s warm, nourishing and adaptable. L.M. (they/them or ze/zir) is a writer, baker, and swimming enthusiast; their pick for “queerest food” is pomegranate because of the queer symbolism of the pomegranate in the myth of Persephone.

Risks and challenges

The content, including contributor content, for this zine is ready and a basic design has been laid out. Robin does our layout and design work and has successfully created layouts and covers for our prior zines. L.M. is in the process of editing our recipes and flavor text.

We have published two successful zines, including the first issue of The Corners of Their Mouth. Our printer is local, reliable, and does excellent work. Barring any natural disasters or work/health crises, our goal is to have the zine printed by July and sent to backers immediately. We will also be throwing a launch party in Seattle (details TBD).
