Project Update - 18 August 2018
I know many of you have been asking for an update. I was going to do one sooner, but we had some stuff come up with the manufacturer, and I wanted to make sure I understood the issue completely before telling you about it.
So, with that ominous introduction, let’s dig in…
Good News & Bad News
Ok, the GOOD NEWS is, manufacturing is progressing, and game components are being made! Scroll to the bottom of this update for some pictures from LongPack I recently received.
The BAD NEWS: It is taking a lot longer than the original estimates they gave me. Back in June, when I wired them half of the money, and started sending files, I was told that manufacturing time would be 12-16 weeks, +/- a week or so. Hence, I estimated around Oct for fulfillment.
However, that timeline line has been significantly extended. After multiple emails trying to get a clear idea of the situation, the picture below shows the timeline that I was sent a few days ago.
As you can (or maybe can't) see, they are estimating that product won’t arrive at the fulfillment centers until January 2019.
This really sucks, because 1) I hate delays, 2) I feel bad that you have to wait longer than I had originally said, 3) it makes my life come Christmas time much more complicated, 4) I really wanted to have product to sell at our Spiel’18 booth in Essen, Germany, and 5) I’m pretty sure I had told some of you this would for sure be delivered by Christmas.
I’ve been emailing LongPack to see if there are anyways to speed things up. One option might be paying for them to hire workers to do overtime, but the initial quotes they gave me seemed not worth it, aka thousands of dollars just for a week or two sooner. I’ll also look into the option of air-freight, though again, I’m not expecting it to be viable option.
I’ll continue trying to see what I can do to get us closer to our original dates. I’m so sorry about this.
Rulebook – Final Draft
I’ve looked at and considered many of the comments you all made on the rulebook. I’ve included some of the suggestions you made, and really appreciate the help you’ve provided. I’d love it if you could take one last look at it, before I sent to print. Note that it is in low resolution, hence some of the symbols will look a little blurry.
I’ve decided to keep the current format versus redoing the entire order of how things are explained. As indicated in the survey I took last month, roughly 60% of you are fine with it, another 20% would prefer it to be different but are also ok with the current format, and another 20% would like it to be much different.
In order to appease that last 20% I’m happy to say that my wife and I are working on a “First Game Instruction Manual” which will be available as a printed PDF and as a mobile friendly web page. This manual will take you through a scripted, predetermined game that will give you a feeling how each action, upgrade, and scenario works. It is designed for 4 players, and will basically hold your hand as you go through at least 4 rounds of the game, step by step. And, we've arranged to have the cards sorted for you at the manufacturer, so that they match this manual.
I think this will complement the rule book very well, and be a much easier way to learn how to play. Based on my experience teaching this game, I think no matter how the rule book is designed, someone will still have trouble learning the game, so this manual will negate that risk, and essentially be like having the designer in the room with you, telling you what to do.
This manual is still in the draft stage, but when it is a little further along, I’ll share for you all to critique.
Mountaineers Web App
The mobile web-app is nearly complete! Below is a link to it on our website. Please feel free to check it out, and let me know if you see any major problems! Note that it is meant to be viewed on a phone, so if it looks different on your computer screen, that is why.
A big thanks to Shawn Hayward for working on this, and giving us a great deal on the project!
Still waiting on our little mountaineer to arrive. We are 13 days past due, so definitely could happen anytime now. All lot of my time is spent helping Kirsty and taking her to checkup appointments. If I’m slow to respond to your comments/emails, you now know why!
Because some of my customers don’t get Kickstarter updates, I’ll be sending out a mass-email update to all our Massif Games backers and followers. It will have some info about our booth at Spiel, other games, and general Massif Games stuff. I try not to spam anyone, but if you get 2 messages from me this week, that is why.
Please don’t ask me to change your address in CrowdOx for you. Instead, you can do it yourself, by logging back into your order. Here is a link that shows you how:
Thanks for your patience on this project. Again, my apologies about the manufacturing delays. I’ll do all I can to change things. In the meantime, I hope you have a pleasant weekend, and I’ll let you know when I have new info!
