Project Update - 18 August 2018

Hello Backers,

I know many of you have been asking for an update. I was going to do one sooner, but we had some stuff come up with the manufacturer, and I wanted to make sure I understood the issue completely before telling you about it.

So, with that ominous introduction, let’s dig in…

Good News & Bad News

Ok, the GOOD NEWS is, manufacturing is progressing, and game components are being made! Scroll to the bottom of this update for some pictures from LongPack I recently received.

The BAD NEWS: It is taking a lot longer than the original estimates they gave me. Back in June, when I wired them half of the money, and started sending files, I was told that manufacturing time would be 12-16 weeks, +/- a week or so. Hence, I estimated around Oct for fulfillment.

However, that timeline line has been significantly extended. After multiple emails trying to get a clear idea of the situation, the picture below shows the timeline that I was sent a few days ago.

Not the most inspiring of timelines... And it definitely is not what I was told in June when I choose them as the manufacturer.
Not the most inspiring of timelines... And it definitely is not what I was told in June when I choose them as the manufacturer.

As you can (or maybe can't) see, they are estimating that product won’t arrive at the fulfillment centers until January 2019.

This really sucks, because 1) I hate delays, 2) I feel bad that you have to wait longer than I had originally said, 3) it makes my life come Christmas time much more complicated, 4) I really wanted to have product to sell at our Spiel’18 booth in Essen, Germany, and 5) I’m pretty sure I had told some of you this would for sure be delivered by Christmas.

I’ve been emailing LongPack to see if there are anyways to speed things up. One option might be paying for them to hire workers to do overtime, but the initial quotes they gave me seemed not worth it, aka thousands of dollars just for a week or two sooner. I’ll also look into the option of air-freight, though again, I’m not expecting it to be viable option.

I’ll continue trying to see what I can do to get us closer to our original dates. I’m so sorry about this.

Rulebook – Final Draft

I’ve looked at and considered many of the comments you all made on the rulebook. I’ve included some of the suggestions you made, and really appreciate the help you’ve provided. I’d love it if you could take one last look at it, before I sent to print. Note that it is in low resolution, hence some of the symbols will look a little blurry.

Rule Book Final Draft – Please Comment

I’ve decided to keep the current format versus redoing the entire order of how things are explained. As indicated in the survey I took last month, roughly 60% of you are fine with it, another 20% would prefer it to be different but are also ok with the current format, and another 20% would like it to be much different.

In order to appease that last 20% I’m happy to say that my wife and I are working on a “First Game Instruction Manual” which will be available as a printed PDF and as a mobile friendly web page. This manual will take you through a scripted, predetermined game that will give you a feeling how each action, upgrade, and scenario works. It is designed for 4 players, and will basically hold your hand as you go through at least 4 rounds of the game, step by step. And, we've arranged to have the cards sorted for you at the manufacturer, so that they match this manual.

I think this will complement the rule book very well, and be a much easier way to learn how to play. Based on my experience teaching this game, I think no matter how the rule book is designed, someone will still have trouble learning the game, so this manual will negate that risk, and essentially be like having the designer in the room with you, telling you what to do.

This manual is still in the draft stage, but when it is a little further along, I’ll share for you all to critique.

Mountaineers Web App

The mobile web-app is nearly complete! Below is a link to it on our website. Please feel free to check it out, and let me know if you see any major problems! Note that it is meant to be viewed on a phone, so if it looks different on your computer screen, that is why.

Mountaineers Web App

A big thanks to Shawn Hayward for working on this, and giving us a great deal on the project!

Other Things…

Still waiting on our little mountaineer to arrive. We are 13 days past due, so definitely could happen anytime now. All lot of my time is spent helping Kirsty and taking her to checkup appointments. If I’m slow to respond to your comments/emails, you now know why!

Because some of my customers don’t get Kickstarter updates, I’ll be sending out a mass-email update to all our Massif Games backers and followers. It will have some info about our booth at Spiel, other games, and general Massif Games stuff. I try not to spam anyone, but if you get 2 messages from me this week, that is why.

Please don’t ask me to change your address in CrowdOx for you. Instead, you can do it yourself, by logging back into your order. Here is a link that shows you how:

http://help.crowdox.com/customer-management/how-do-backers-edit-their-address-after-completing-the-survey

Thanks for your patience on this project. Again, my apologies about the manufacturing delays. I’ll do all I can to change things. In the meantime, I hope you have a pleasant weekend, and I’ll let you know when I have new info!

Sincerely,

Corey Wright

@Dave... Let me investigate... it was working before

When I follow the link for the web app, in Chrome on Android, I just get this in the middle of the page:

Well, this is disappointing to hear. I was hoping to have my box copy to play at Extra-Life 2018. Oh well, better late than never. Better a quality product than a cheap one.

      C'est la vie.

Same here. Nothing you could have controlled or foreseen so not your fault at all. And there's no need from my point of view to spend any inordinate amount of time or money trying to fix it. And I also agree too, if you can get some copies for Speil 18 that you are able to sell there, by all means, go for it. Not only do I not mind, I'm rooting for you to have some in hand.

And, I agree with the others in saying that you have clearly done your best, but you can’t control the manufacturer. I’ll gladly wait a bit longer for quality, and approve of you getting some copies to sell at the Con. I agree that this is fine for small independents, but is irritating when the big dogs start selling commercially ahead of their KS backers. Good luck on the birth!

I like the white pips on the dice. Looks like ice!

Bummer about the manufacturer basically lying to you, but we are excited to play the game when it does finally come!

If it comes down to it, I would also support selling at spiel over delivery to backers. I also appreciate all of the effort you have been putting into this game. Thank you.

These things happen to all games. Keep up the good work.

No worries on the delays. The manufacturers often push the smaller projects to the side to do the big guys' projects first. Don't spend more money to speed it up. Anyone with a problem with the timeline needs to realize their first world problems aren't worth stressing over.
As for Spiel, if it works out to get some copies for it, sell away. I don't mind if small publishers do that. I do take offense when the big guys do it, because they have the money, clout, and resources to get their projects done in time.
Lastly, congrats on the new family member (whether it has arrived yet or not). Enjoy it, you two deserve it.

You and Kirsty have yet to cease to amaze me at the amount of effort, work, thought, & care you are putting into this amazing project! Everyone will be so happy to get such a complete and gorgeous looking game. Thank you!

Obviously a shitty move on the manufacture who was obviously just making promises/telling you what you wanted to hear to get you to confirm and send your cash.

Not much you can do to control this now the process has already begun, I would far rather you just let it run in it’s new timeline than overstretch them or yourself to try and speed it up more.

We would obviously all like to have it sooner and if you find a realitivly easy fix then great though I would say trying to deliver around the Christmas period would likely cause it’s own set of issues anyway.

Though I would say if your able to just get enough copies for yourself so you can sell them at Spiel’18 then I would fully support that decision though I know some backers get a bit needy about expecting to be the first to have the game so perhaps something to check the majority would be good with if it’s a possibility.

Hope everything is going well with the new family member, and thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Really appreciate your offer of the quick start manual, those are often so helpful for games, especially for larger than life games like this one!

Thanks Michael and Jaesuhn. @C.M. totally understandable to be disappointed. I've been there myself in KS projects I've backed. I had really hoped I'd be on time with this one for you guys, but it just isn't turning out that way. Hindsight 20/20, I'll do a lot of things different for any future projects in the gaming sphere.

I don't think I speak out of turn by saying I'm disappointed, but I absolutely agree with the others. Better late and good/as expected than on-time and subpar

I agree with Dr. Ross: you can't control everything in life. No worries on the delay.

No worries on the lateness! Life happens and anyone who really cares is flat out being irrational. Good luck on the little one!
