Strange Donuts is a new, independent donut shop offering original classics and new creations. Coming soon to St. Louis at 2709 Sutton in Downtown Maplewood.
Our concept came together in late 2012, between partners Corey Smale and Tyler Fenwick. We'd already loved donuts, and St. Louis has a serious amount of classic shops, but no one here was doing what we had in mind, and what many others had seen done in other parts of the country. Immediately we recruited Sweet Will, who said yes before we were done asking. He'd already had experience on his own with Sweet William's Custom Cakes (http://www.facebook.com/sweetwillies), and also at The Cup in the Central West End. We've been working hard and making donuts ever since.
Over the past few months we've secured our location, architect and finances. We have our lease signed and are near construction of the kitchen. We have to mention, the City of Maplewood has been tremendous in welcoming our business and we really can't say enough about the amount of support from the people and businesses that make this place so great.
We're looking to open May 1st and will be open mornings 6AM - Noon, and Friday and Saturday nights from 8PM - Midnight. We'll also have our own blend of organic Peurvian coffee ("Strange Brew"), with help from friends at Kuva Coffee http://facebook.com/kuvacoffee.
We've put everything on the line with this and have kept our focus (and at times sanity) in tact with full support from family, friends, and also many of the new people and places we've been fortunate to meet through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Along the way, many of these people have asked, "How can I help?"
So we thought, what better way to make these donuts than with the help of our family, fans, neighbors, and friends? Here's how:
Funding this project ($10K) purchases the equipment we need.
It's pretty simple. We've priced out our fryer, oven, hood and major components necessary to get the Strange Donuts kitchen up and running, and at well-researched, gently-used equipment prices, we've found great efficiencies that allow this number to be far lower than average. Specifically, $10K covers the following:
+ Fryer and Hood
+ Proofing Box
+ Donut Cutter
+ 30 Qt. Mixer
+ Glazing Tables
And as our way of saying thanks, we have some really nice rewards for backers, including super cool first-edition Strange Donuts t-shirts and mugs. There's also a chance to create your own Strange Donut in the shop with friends and Sweet Will!
All or nothing. Over the goal is good!
With Kickstarter it's all or nothing, meaning we have 30 days to raise $10K or we get nothing at all; which makes Sweet Will really sad, and that's really sad. However, if we raise over $10K, that's great news! Any amount raised over our goal is invested directly into the business and delivering Strange Donuts to you guys as fast as we can.
Again, without the powerful help of everyone involved so far, this wouldn't be possible. Strange Donuts is much more than the 3 of us and it's important we fully understand and appreciate that; collaboration is key. Thanks for taking a minute and checking out our story. Becoming a backer is a great way of showing support, but even spreading the word through a like or a tweet is a major help! Thank you. Stay Strange.

Risks and challenges
We of course have other expenses in the process of opening this shop, including build out, supplies, and inventory (all of which are being personally financed separately), but this Kickstarter project does cover nearly all of our hands-on donut equipment costs - a major part of the equation and an opportunity for us to share this idea from the ground up with you, our family and friends.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
