About

Led by New Zealand-born Corey Baker, Corey Baker Dance is producing two new productions, Kapa Haka Tale and Haka Day Out, that will tour during the period of the 2015 Rugby World Cup in the UK. The Haka is synonymous with rugby and Corey Baker Dance’s touring productions aim to capitalise on the excitement and hype around the world’s biggest rugby event. Touring across the UK, the performances will celebrate culture, athleticism, diversity and innovation by sharing the native New Zealand art form and culture with audiences.

Haka Day Out

Haka Day Out is a free day-time outdoor performance showcasing the native New Zealand Māori art form ‘kapa haka’, touring to UK festivals, and designated Rugby World Cup ‘Fan Zones’ across RWC host cities. You will not only see the fierce Haka being performed in front of your eyes but also get a chance to learn it yourself.

Kapa Haka Tale

Kapa Haka Tale is an enchanting theatre production based on the Māori myth and legend Hinemoa and Tutanekai, one of New Zealand’s finest folk stories. Audiences will be immersed in and experience the wonders the Māori culture and all its art form has to offer. We have a fantastic team of collaborators; Designer Yann Seabra; Dramaturg Bush Hartshorn; Music composition and arrangement; Duncan Grimley, and Digital Designer: Shaun PRICKIMAGE. The production features UK contemporary dancers as well as New Zealand Maori talent. The music in both productions is by celebrated New Zealander Tiki Taane, and we are collaborating with the Chairman of Ngāti Rānana London Māori Club, Lewis Whaitiri as Cultural Advisor.

Kapa Haka Tale is designed for a small-mid scale black box theatre, but scalable to increase in size to match our future ambition for the show. Ticket prices for our Autumn tour start from £6.

Why kickstarter?

After four years in development, we are ready to hit open spaces and theatres across the UK, and we just need your help to raise our last 10% to make this vision a reality. Please join us in our mission to celebrate and share the Māori culture and performing art across the UK during the unique window of opportunity provided by the Rugby World Cup. This momentous sporting event provides an international stage for everyone to enjoy – it’s the ideal opportunity to present our work while the eyes of the world are on the UK. We just need to fulfill our final target so we can kick off and Haka to touchdown.

This year Corey was nominated as 'New Zealander of the Year’ for the prestigious New Zealand Society annual award. We feel privileged to be supported by New Zealand Society and New Zealand High Commission for these projects, as well as commissioned by DanceXchange, Birmingham Weekender and funded by Arts Council England, New Zealand Society and Leicester City Council. We are proud to be endorsed by Wayne Sleep.

Risks and challenges

The first challenge we face is raising our final target to ensure that we can create and tour these two productions far and wide.

Once we have secured our finances, the real fun begins.

In outdoor touring, the main challenge is always the weather. There is not a lot we can do to change this, but we have created an adaptable outdoor performance and a theatre performance, so that no matter what, rain or shine, if there is an audience, we will deliver.

With a dance performance, injury of a performer is always something that may occur. Of course we look after our dancers, and work hard to ensure that this is prevented as much as possible. In the case that it does happen, we have arranged for two casts of the outdoor show, and cover for the theatre show, so contingency plans are in place. If you pledge £1000, you can come in to the studio and see for yourselves a typical rehearsal day for the company.

It is important to Corey Baker Dance that this project is collaborative, sharing and inviting. We are building a family of supporters around us to come in this journey with us, and that includes you. Our family will aid the success of this culturally important project.
