What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

A fun, hands-on, educational project

Kits are where it's at. With our Desktop Infinity Mirror Kit you'll get to make something wonderful with your hands, all in the span of an afternoon. But if you want, you can dive deeper, follow our tutorials, level-up your coding and make this thing truly your own.

The Desktop Infinity Mirror creates an amazing optical illusion using a single strip of LEDs, a mirror, and a semi-reflective mirror. The dazzling tunnel of light it creates seems to tear through space. Better still, the embedded controller is WiFi enabled, opening up the possibilities of web interaction.

With your help, we'd like to launch the Desktop Infinity Mirror as a kit of parts with a complement of tutorial articles and videos.

We think our kit nourishes maker-skills -- and nothing beats being able to say "I made this." But that's only the beginning: You can adapt, hack, or repurpose this kit with the help of our tutorials or you can go fully off-road and make something else amazing!

What's in the kit?

We will pack all the parts you need to build this kit including:

  • Pre-cut acrylic panels (including specialty material for mirrored surface)
  • Particle Photon development board with WiFi (pre-programmed)
  • All required electronics bits and pieces for assembly
  • Fasteners (nuts and bolts)
  • 5V 2.5 Amp Power Supply (RCM Approved = Safe)
  • Instruction Manual
  • And of course, an open offer for support from us along the way via forum / email / phone.

Some tools you'll need (not included in rewards). You'll need some common maker tools such as a screwdriver, side cutters, a sharp knife and a soldering iron. Most makers have this gear already. If you don't, keep in mind these tools are very accessible and useful for countless future projects.

Free shipping in Australia

This kit is over 1kg when boxed, and you read correctly, we'll ship your kit to you anywhere in Australia for free.

Who are we?

Core Electronics is a team of makers in the heart of Newcastle, Australia. We founded this business to nourish the maker movement in Australia back in 2007. Since then, we've helped thousands of makers all over the country by delivering electronics parts, helping people with their projects and creating freely accessible educational content.

We conceptualised the Desktop Infinity Mirror with an in-house project called the Infinity Mirror Table (our take on a popular maker project). There was such a positive reaction from the community (and so many calls of "I want one!") that we decided to scale the project down into a kit that any maker can assemble in an afternoon. What's more, makers can use the Desktop Infinity Mirror as a unique platform to learn about coding and the Internet of Things.

The current stage of development

The prototype already works perfectly as a neat piece of dazzling desktop tech. We'll create straight-forward instructions for assembly along with online tutorials and videos to help you develop your own patterns or features (even make it web connected!)

Our plan

The rewards will be fabricated and kitted in-house, and we have the necessary machinery already. We'll be able to press the GO-button the moment the campaign ends!

Risks and challenges

New products always offer unique challenges, but we're confident we have the systems in place for a smooth campaign and delivery on our objectives.

The risk: Delays in fulfillment could come from parts and material supply, the fabrication of kits, or shipping.

The measure: The raw material for these kits is acrylic, which is available in large quantities from numerous mature and reliable suppliers with a quick turnaround. We're a maker-electronics distributor, so we already have a supply network in place for acquiring electronics like the Particle Photon. In fact, we've been stocking them for years! We have an amazing logistics team that already fulfills thousands of orders per month.

---

The risk: Supporting tutorial material not living up to what is promised.

The measure: We're full-time makers, and have already produced a series of free, online courses for Arduino, Raspberry Pi and 3D printing, not to mention a couple hundred individual tutorials. We only create content that we ourselves would enjoy and benefit from, so you can rest assured that we stand by it.
