Chiseled: A Deck-Sculpting Game (Canceled)
A competitive, "reverse-deck-building" card game about sculpting marble for 1-4 players.
The Critics are coming to rate your sculptures; grab a mallet and a rasp and sculpt your block of marble! But what will you do when your fellow sculptors grab the only Mallet on the workbench? Or the one Rasp? Will you settle for the risky Saw? Meddle with your rivals with the Polishing Stone? Or will you plan ahead with the Maquette?
Reveal the art within, only in Chiseled!
~30 Minutes | 1-4 Players | Ages 14+
Chiseled is a deck-sculpting card game about sculpting marble. Play as artists in a shared studio, working to complete your sculptures by the time any player has checked in with the three critics enough times to get rated. Using one Tool at a time from the shared workbench, remove and accentuate cards from your individual block of marble--your starting deck of cards--to improve its artistic value, and please the critics from across history for bonuses. Each Tool offers a unique method of interacting with the marble.
- Reverse Deck-Building: "Deck Sculpting" improves your deck by removing bad cards... but don't go too far or you'll suffer missed opportunities in your sculpture!
- Action-Drafting: Each Tool is unique, but can only be used once until all Tools flip again!
- Set-Making: Accentuate arm, torso, and head pieces in different ways to score big! The twist is that you have all that you need already-- in some cases, too much!
- Solitaire score-challenge mode: Fast, fun, and easy to set up again and again! Solo games only run about 15-20 minutes, making it perfect for lunch breaks.
At its core, think of Chiseled as a deck-building game in reverse.
Players will be removing cards from their deck, representing introducing negative space artistically into their sculpture, to increase their deck's artistic value. It is a largely unique take on this mechanism, fused with a thematic match that will appeal both to deck-building game fans, former deck-building game fans who are looking for a change, and to sculpture-loving art fans alike.
Typical multiplayer games take 15 to 30 minutes, and both set up and clean up are a snap: just shuffle your sculpture pile and trash pile together, draw three cards, and play again!
With your help, Chiseled will be brought to life, delighting you and your fellow sculptors game after game!
Shipping will be charged following the campaign via a pledge manager service. Scroll down to SHIPPING for more information on expected cost estimates.
Each player starts with a 45-card deck (their block of marble), worth negative ten (-10) points. Yikes!
Using shared Tools one at a time, remove ugly "Scrap" cards and accentuate various sculpted elements (head, torso, arm) in different ways to score big. Once a Tool is used, it cannot be used again by any player until the entire workbench have been used, and they all flip back to being available.
Select and flip a Tool card, (flipping them all face-up if they're all face-down at the start of your turn) to use it. Each Tool is unique, and offers ways to improve your Sculpture:
- The Mallet lets you remove all cards from your hand from your sculpture with a mighty whack
- The Flat Chisel is great for removing Scrap, but has diminishing returns as you remove more
- The Maquette lets you plan for future turns by stacking your deck for your next two turns
The core game of Chiseled comes with 9 Tools, each of which have a unique effect based on the tool's use in real-life sculpting.
If we reach our $17,000 Stretch Goal, we will be able to include several blank Tool and Critic cards in the core game, for the game designer in you! Do you have a friend you'd like to turn into a Critic? Do you have an idea for a Tool we missed that you think is important to sculpt with? With these properly-formatted cards you'll be able to make your own to use in your game! Plus, for those ordering the Deluxe Version of Chiseled, there will be up to 4 all-new Tools included--1 at minimum! (See Chiseled Deluxe:Sine Cera below for more information.)
Once a player's deck is empty, they will shuffle their Discard Pile into a new Deck.
When a player's sculpture starts looking more polished (represented by a lack of visible Scrap), the Critics will take notice and move closer, represented by adjusting a Check-In Card. Once any player's card reaches 0, all other players will get one last turn, and all players will get their art rated!
Play proceeds to the left. If you are very displeased with your current Sculpture, you may shuffle your Trash Pile, Discard Pile, and Deck together to start over with a new block of marble. However, your Check-In Card does not reset, so you'll be starting at -10 points with less time to hammer out victory!
Chiseled uses indirect opposition as you attempt to sculpt your work... but what if you want a "take-that" element in your sculpting game? Chiseled: Sine Cera is a 2-4 player, +5-10 minute expansion to Chiseled that adds exactly that!
In Sine Cera play, 24 Waxed Marble cards are distributed evenly among all decks and shuffled in; these feature a distinct back, and are worth 1 point for each in your final sculpture...
...unless you have the most. Then each Waxed Marble card is worth -1 point, which can tip the scales between victory and defeat if you're not careful! Before you Sculpt, you can place any Waxed Marble from your hand OR the top of your deck into any player's discard pile, including your own!
Sine Cera also introduces a new Tool to fix your mistakes without needing to start over completely-- Wax! This Tool (and any others unlocked as deluxe stretch goals) are usable in any game of Chiseled, even when not using the Waxed Marble cards.
Use it wisely!
If we reach certain stretch goals, the Sine Cera box will also include up to 3 new Tool Cards beyond Wax, which will allow players even more strategic options to work with each game! With the Heavy Sledge, Jackhammer, and Polishing Rag, you'll be able to risk your cards or risk the Critics arriving earlier as you further sculpt your deck.
What's in the Box?
We have calculated out our costs to print and import the game with an experienced and reliable manufacturer, while also meeting our obligations to our artists and graphic designers to finalize any visual aspects of the game, and also Kickstarter's cut, to $12,500. If you pledge to support that amount, Chiseled and Sine Cera will be printed! However, that is just the beginning! If we can get more backers interested, Copper Frog Games will improve on both productsthrough a set of "Stretch Goals". These are broken up into "Base" (which will be included in every copy of Chiseled) and "Deluxe" (which will be included in every copy of Sine Cera, and thus the Deluxe tier of Chiseled and higher). Help us chisel out more from our block of marble and reveal the final goals!
- $12,500: Funded: Chiseled and Chiseled: Sine Cera will now exist!
- $13,000: Stretch Goal 1: The Polishing Rag will be added to Sine Cera, and we'll be able to get bigger and better diagrams into the core rulebook by nearly doubling its overall page size!
- $15,000: Stretch Goal 2: The Heavy Sledge will be added to Sine Cera, and we'll be able to improve the paper quality of the player mats for extra snappiness and durability!
- $17,000: Stretch Goal 3: The Jackhammer will be added to Sine Cera, and we'll add several extra formatted, blank cards to the base game box, letting players create their own Tool and Critic cards!
If we reach our $14,000 stretch goal, the final rulebook will be much larger (almost double in physical dimensions from the prototype version), with more diagrams, comprehensive examples, better readability, and improved feel in the hands!
There are 4 major tiers being offered to get you a copy of Chiseled:
Chiseled - $25: Gets you one copy of Chiseled, along with all "Base Stretch Goals" such as rulebook improvements, paper stock thickening, and more. Shipping will be charged after the campaign via a pledge manager (see Shipping, below).
Chiseled Deluxe - $35: Gets you one copy of the core game, plus the Sine Cera expansion packed inside, along with ALL stretch goals including new Tools in the Sine Cera pack. Shipping will be charged after the campaign via a pledge manager (see Shipping, below).
Stone, Paint, and Wood: Deluxe Games - $60: Gets you one copy of the Deluxe version of Chiseled, plus a copy of our first artistic game, Pigment, shipped out when the campaign ends, along with ALL stretch goals unlocked during the campaign. We will also include 6 artisan-crafted hardwood meeples in 3 woods (for use as premium Apprentices in Pigment) from our Meeple Machine Kickstarter last summer! This option is limited and available to US backers only, with shipping on the copy of Chiseled charged after the campaign via a pledge manager (see Shipping, below).
Patron of the Arts: Chiseled - $250: Gets you the Chiseled Deluxe package, your name in the credits as a Patron of the Arts, AND a miniature 3D-printed metal sculptor's mallet! Shipping will be charged after the campaign via a pledge manager (see Shipping, below).
This is Copper Frog Games's third Kickstarter, and we've learned a LOT from shipping out the past two. Namely, that we don't have the means or facilities to get several hundred packages out the door in a timely fashion, which you deserve. As such, we're teaming up with our friends at Greater Than Games to both fulfill and warehouse Chiseled post-campaign for US orders, and Spiral Galaxy Games for fulfilling European orders. They're pros who have run fulfillment on million-dollar-plus Kickstarters in the past, and GTG's central location in the US will prove invaluable to getting the games to you at the best rates. Check out their awesome lineup of games, too!
While postage is a fickle figure to calculate months ahead of time, we have posted some expected numbers below for various regions. If there is significant international interest, we may work with even more fulfillment services to get you your games for less!
Postage will be charged after the campaign ends via a pledge manager service, both to ensure that you are getting the best deals on postage, and to ensure that Copper Frog Games will be able to continue making artistic games for all in case costs alter dramatically in a bad direction. We will be making an Update about this process towards the middle of the campaign.
Copper Frog Games is committed to supporting hobby game retailers who back our games, and want to make getting players their games as painless as possible, even in areas where shipping is more difficult.
We are offering a Retailer Pledge Level where you can choose to either put a down payment of $5 per case of basic Chiseled (with all unlocked base stretch goals), or $6 per case of Deluxe Chiseled, (including Sine Cera and all stretch goals), with both options including all stretch goals unlocked, plus extra promotional goodies (printable posters and point-of-sale standees) for retailers upon delivery. Backing with that extra dollar lets us get a better count on how many Sine Cera expansions to produce, so if you want the expansions, please include that dollar! Chiseled will come in case counts of 6 games, for both base and deluxe versions that contain Sine Cera.
We will be reaching out to retailers as we get closer to shipping to confirm quantities and final pledge amounts, but the games will be priced at keystone, with free US shipping to brick & mortar retailers, and discounted shipping to online-only retailers. Retail copies will be shipped at the same time as normal backer pledges.
Many backers in harder-to-ship-to locales often band together and do a group pledge to save a bit on shipping. If you intend on doing this, make sure all pledges are sent through ONE backer; they will be mailed to ONE location, which will likely save on shipping for the group. Note that we cannot take responsibility for that backer's responsibilities to other buyers who may be jumping in on their pledge, and while this will save on shipping for the games, due to uncertainty with future shipping costs, we cannot offer a bulk discount for group pledges. Instead, ask your local retailer to request Chiseled from their distributors, or to back at our Retailer pledge tier (see above)-- or ideally both!

Risks and challenges
This is the third Kickstarter run by Copper Frog Games LLC, and we have learned a lot about it from our last two, especially regarding shipping timelines. In terms of design and development, Chiseled is done, and has been for some time. The game is thoroughly tested and quite fun, the base amount of art is drawn and on the cards except for the Scrap Art that will be selected by Patron of the Arts-tier backers, and 90% of the graphic design and layout is fully finalized for both the base game and Sine Cera. Nate will start on any stretch goal art as it gets unlocked, and will do the Scrap illustration for each deck according to the Patrons of the Arts' desires immediately following the campaign.
We are committed to getting you the most beneficial shipping rates, and will be charging shipping via a pledge manager service closer to fulfillment to ensure that. If there are delays in getting the games printed or shipped, we will be sure to let you know. By partnering with Greater Than Games and possibly other fulfillment specialists, we can work towards all backers getting their games on time and on budget.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
