Last Year, a bunch of friends here in the San Francisco Bay Area worked together to produce Convolution 2012: The Next Step; a three-day volunteer-operated, science fiction, fantasy, and media convention with the goal of taking general sci-fi cons a further step forward from their traditional, panel-oriented roots.
We provided a forum for creative professionals to entertain, network, and enjoy the company of people also in the creative industries. Fans had the chance to learn new skills and meet professionals they admire, and join in the fellowship of our community.
Convolution 2012 was an incredible success. Guests and attendees enjoyed the participatory programming, and membership numbers exceeded all hopes and expectations.
Now we are preparing for Convolution 2013, happening November 1st-3rd, in Burlingame, at the Hyatt Regency SFO Hotel! The theme this year is "The Gates of Horn & Ivory: The Realms of Dream". Guests and attendees of our second annual event will delve into dreams and nightmares: what they are, the science of where dreams come from, why they influence us, and how we channel them into our creative works. All this, alongside hands-on workshops and tutorials, costuming and FX make-up demonstrations, one-on-one interaction with live birds of prey courtesy of West Coast Falconry, gaming of every sort, from console gaming to tabletop RPGs and LARPing, Nerd Bingo with Featured Guest Ivan Van Norman from "The King of the Nerds" season one, a Writer's Workshop, and SO much more!
To enhance this convention experience, we want to bring you a jaw-dropping Saturday night event. We're talking about creating a dance and concert event the likes of which sci-fi cons have rarely seen.
So we're here on Kickstarter to ask for your help in funding this endeavor.
In honor of Brian, Wendy and Toby Froud, just some of our 2013 Guests of Honor- all of whom worked on or appeared in the Jim Henson film Labyrinth- we'll be throwing The Goblin King's Masked Ball, a lavish evening of live musical acts and dance performances, intermingled with sets of local DJs spinning atmospheric music. Currently on the line-up are live performances from:
... and there are more to come as we line up more amazing talent!
As planned, the scope of this event will require professional lighting, sound, and set pieces, as well as a variety of props and decorations appropriate to the theme, which is what our initial fundraising goal will pay for. We're working with a local event planning agent and our volunteer force of professional fabrication geniuses to make sure we have the ability to decorate the Grand Peninsula Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency SFO Airport Hotel in style, to take you right through your choice of Gates- so you enter the ball as either a vision passing through the Gate of Horn, or a nightmare entering via the Gate of Ivory. Once you pass the threshold, we're looking to dazzle you with an environment inspired by the crystal bubble/"As The World Falls Down" scene, which is one of the most iconic moments from the classic Henson/Froud film Labyrinth.
Lighting and sound equipment will be provided by Reaction Audio Visual, a company known for working magic with events like PAX, GenCon, and the Wizards of the Coast booth at E3. We're also looking to bring aerialist performers from The Vespertine Circus to thrill and entertain you throughout the night.
Temple of Poi is the world's first Poi Fire Dancing and Flow Arts school, offering lessons and free workshops to poi and fire dancers since 2002. We saw members of Temple of Poi perform at another local convention back in May, and were blown away- Isa, Nova and Greg are brilliant at what they do!
Fire poi, you say? Inside a hotel, you say? Well, that's the beauty of it- they spin LED-lit poi, as well as fire- and the displays of grace and artistry they create with light, movement and sound are a wonder to behold!
Having successfully completed three Kickstarter campaigns of their own to host the annual San Francisco Union Square Fire Dance Expo events, Temple of Poi are pros at this whole thing, and we couldn't be happier to have these brilliant performers joining us at Convolution 2013, to make your Goblin King's Masked Ball an evening unlike any other!
Our stretch goals would allow for additional performers, delicious hors d'ouvres and refreshments for those in attendance from the award-winning Hyatt Regency SFO Hotel caterers, and screening rights for both Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal to be shown over the course of the weekend. Anything beyond our initially-planned stretch goals will go towards enhancing the entire weekend's experience, like expanding the full-color insert in our Souvenir Program book to make the entire book a full-color collector's item to commemorate the event, as well as allowing us to provide some more reward goodies that we have waiting in the wings!
So please, consider a funding pledge to help us create a one time, immersive experience for our Saturday revels that you definitely won't want to miss! You'll be expanding the quality of our event, and everyone will have an unforgettable night!
Stretch Goal #1- Screening Rights for The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth at the convention- ACHIEVED! We needed to reach $13,500 to bring screenings of these iconic films to our program of events- and you've done it! On to the next goal!
Stretch Goal #2- Creating our Souvenir Program Book in FULL Color- ACHIEVED!
Now that we have surpassed $15,500 funded, we'll be able to create our Souvenir Program book in it's entirety in FULL color, instead of just having a 6-8 page insert of color images. We'll be able to provide you with a program book the likes of which you'd see at professional Broadway theatre productions, or at concerts and touring performance events. We will also be adding a copy of this fantastic souvenir book to every reward level above the $25 mark (Backers at the $10 "Dream Book" level already get one, obviously!), so that everyone can have a copy of the tangible awesomeness they helped to create!
Here's what the cover of Convolution 2012's Souvenir Program Book looked like. Last year's Artist Guest of Honor Julie Dillon provided our brilliant custom cover artwork, and inside there were bios and photos of all the Guests, a short story from Author Guest of Honor Steve Berman, and so much more! But the inside was all black and white... with your help, we can make 2013's Souvenir book burst with full color images, front to back!
Stretch Goal #3- Custom Imprinted CHESSEX Six-Sided Dice- ACHIEVED!!!
Now that we have reached $17,000 funded, we will be including a pair of custom-imprinted Chessex six-sided dice with every pre-registration bag for the members at the convention, AND for every Kickstarter backer who has pledged at the $10 reward level or higher. Here's an image our Vice Chair took at another convention he attended, of their custom-imprinted dice. Instead of the "one" dot, you'll get the Convolution 2013 Sphinx Coin Logo imprint on the dice- it's going to look so cool! If you look at the image to the left, and in the upper right, you'll see the custom imprinted side.
Stretch Goal #4- More Froud Goodness for Everyone- ACHIEVED!!!
Now that we have reached a total of $18,000 funded before the end here, we will produce a full-color, 8.5"x11" print of a piece from their latest art book Trolls, a collaborative work between artist Brian Froud, and his wife, sculptor Wendy Froud. This print will be included in the reward level for all backers over the $10 level, and will be printed on archival quality card stock. Here's another example of the amazing work from this book:
From here on out, anything beyond our 4th stretch goal is just going to go towards making the Goblin King's Masked Ball that much bigger, that much brighter, that much more special for everyone who has been SO wonderful as to show your support for this project! The response has been mighty, and astonishing, and humbling- and we cannot wait to share this amazing weekend with all of you, whether here in body, or in spirit!
NEW REWARDS!! Here's preview images of items involved in some of our reward levels-
Risks and challenges
There is always a chance that Life may rear up and cause any one of our Guests or performers to not be able to attend. We knock on wood, and hope that doesn't happen- but if it does, we've been creative before. Members of our staff team were at another event who had a Guest come up ill and be unable to attend within 3 days of the event starting, and instead of admitting defeat- we scrambled, and managed to make a virtual presence capable, so that the Guest was able to stay and convalesce in the comfort of their own home, but still spend time meeting and sharing with the convention's attendees who had come to see them. When the same Guest was able to come to the event the following year- they remarked how it was like meeting old friends again, and everyone was thrilled to be able to meet face to face this time. We will always do everything within our power to creatively solve every obstacle laid on our path.
Another risk/challenge that might be perceived is not securing the funding. However- the convention itself is budgeted, staffed, contracted, and IS happening, one way or the other- that's not in question. The Saturday night Masked Ball will also happen, no matter what. Our ability to fully realize all our plans for the Ball, on the other hand, will be restricted if we don't manage to successfully fund this Kickstarter endeavor. Affording the materials for all the decorations, paying the various performers' travel and lodging, renting the furniture and props for the VIP lounge and interior ambience, as well as really stepping up the audio/visual grandeur of the night will all be impacted if we don't secure our funding goal. That's where you come in! We have everyone on the ball, and ready to roll to make this particular "dream" a reality, once we know we can foot the bill.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
