I Am a Blogger - 17 stories about earning a living online

What is I Am a Blogger?

In the past, creators only had a few options to earn a living doing what they loved:

  • Set up shop in their city or town
  • Take their work on the road

But now, instead of being limited to a single town or taking the show on the road, they can set up shop on the web and attract the right customers from all over the world.

We’ve spent the last year traveling to find some of the most interesting and unique creators driving this change.

Now we’re telling those stories in the form of nine short documentary films and a beautiful coffee table book featuring 17 total stories.

This Kickstarter project will help fund the completion of the project and deliver it right to your doorstep.

If you’re a creator who’s always hoped for a better way to explain how you earn a living… If you’re the kind of person who loves supporting independent creators with your hard earned dollars… Or if you hope to earn a living as a creator yourself some day…

We made this project for you. And we call it: I Am a Blogger.

For too many people, blogger is a derogatory term. For us as creators, it’s a word that explains how we earn a living from our work, so we’re taking the word back and re-defining it with this project.

Reward Tiers

To support the project, you can contribute at one of the following levels (some of which are incredibly limited!):

What this Project Will Fund

This project will fund:

  • The final editing and production of nine short documentary films, each ranging from five to nine minutes in length
  • The editing, design, and first print run of the coffee table book.

Overview of the Project

The internet has enabled some of the most talented and interesting people in the world to make a living in a way that was never possible before — we call those people creators.

In the past, a creator — whether a magician, fitness trainer, recording artist, teacher, author, photographer, or other fascinating professional — only had a few options to earn a living doing what they loved:

  • Set up shop in their city or town and hope there’s enough of a customer base to earn a decent living
  • Take their work on the road to find customers wherever they might be

But now, instead of being limited to a single town or taking the show on the road, they can set up shop on the web and attract the right customers from all over the world.

This is creating huge changes in the way the world of work works:

  • It’s easier than ever before for a talented creator who’s honed their craft to earn an honest living doing work they love
  • Getting a traditional “job” has become just one option for earning a living
  • Many people find that they can earn more money and have more fun as an independent creator
  • Everyone else benefits from the products and services being built by these creators

The Documentaries

When we started this project in late 2016, the craziest thing we could think of was traveling all over the country to meet creators in their homes to tell their stories.

Over the course of four months, we did just that as we took four trips to film 90-120 minute interviews with nine different creators across seven cities.

We spent the rest of the day with each creator filming their lives — from their favorite workouts, to getting the kids in bed, to making snacks for baseball practice.

The outcome: nine short films ranging from five to nine minutes capturing the emotional journey of making a living as a blogger.

The Coffee Table Book

Where the documentaries serve to share the emotional arc of each creator’s journey, the coffee table book dives into detail to capture exactly how it all happened along the way.

Beyond the nine creators featured in the short films, we also sat down for long-form audio interviews with eight more creators.

We’ll tell all 17 stories in the book with engaging prose, data-driven graphics, and stunning photography.

You can expect to learn:

  • Why they care about their work so much
  • How they got started
  • How they built an audience
  • When they decided to create their first product or service
  • The biggest struggles and triumphs on the way to earning a full-time living
  • How their business earns money today
  • Their biggest personal and professional lessons learned from earning a living as a creator

But more than anything, you can expect this book to represent why your story as a creator matters. Why being a creator - a blogger, a podcaster, a YouTuber - is one of the most fascinating and rewarding ways to earn a living today.

The Creators

This project features 17 inspiring creators spread across many different industries, skillsets, and cities. Some will be featured in the short films and written stories, while others will be featured solely in written stories.

These creators are:

  • Barron Cuadro - Men’s Fashion - EffortlessGent.com
  • Brooke Schoenman - World Travel - HerPackingList.com
  • Chad Collins - LEGO and Events - BrickFestLive.com

A Preview of The Stories

To get a taste for what we’ll share in the films and coffee table book, here are a few of our favorite quotes from the long-form interviews:

“My audience is the one who told me I should have a business and I kept saying no. I was just putting content out there like bloggers do and somebody said, "I'd pay you for that if you could send it to me as an attachment." … They started asking more and more and wore me down. Finally, this little light bulb went off in the back of my head and I was like, "People would pay me for this? To do what I love? Really?" - Vanessa Levin, helping pre-school teachers keep the kids educated and entertained

“In order to get into [fashion] nowadays, you have to be a little bit different from everyone else. You can't just do a "what I wore today" blog, because there are millions of other people who are doing it. So, what is that thing that would make you a little bit different from the people who are already in the niche?” - Barron Cuadro, helping men dress with confidence and style

“I remember the day I made 12 cents and I was like, "Holy shit, you can make money doing this? Game on." - Corey Willis, helping you make your house feel more like home

“Teaching matters because all of human history is built on teaching. It's this constant investment in those who follow. So, teaching in the classroom matters a lot to me because it's my calling and I feel like I'm made to try to teach these kids about world history and life.” - Dave Stuart, helping teachers become better teachers

The Team Behind the Project

This project is created by the team at ConvertKit, where we’re on a mission to help creators earn a living.

ConvertKit is email marketing software for online creators - the authors, makers, chefs, photographers, YouTubers, teachers, artists and other creators building the future.

Email remains the #1 tool for building an audience and making a living online. If you believe in the importance of empowering creators to build the future, then you believe in the work we do at ConvertKit.

We're a remote team of 30+ people in 24+ cities across 7 countries. We hire A-players and we believe in the power of great company culture to help us grow.

We've partnered with the phenomenal team at Caleb Wojcik Films, who shot all of the video for this project. We also received help from our long-time writing partner, Kayla Hollatz, and a talented editor in Amanda Johnson.

We started this project because we believe creators are the future, we want to help tell the stories of the creators building that future, and now we need you to help us finish it.

Risks and challenges

We'll need to create the coffee table book and video documentaries. Both of these are already underway, and the funds from this project will help us get across the finish line.

We already have the full team in place to help edit, produce, design, and print the documentary films and coffee table book.

The biggest risk to this project would be our current print or video partners going out of business. We have contingency plans for quickly finding a new print or video partner if absolutely necessary, but we don't foresee this being an issue.
