Let me start by shortly introduce myself. My name is Tristan Buchinhoren, thirthy five years young, married to the mother of our beautiful twin boys of four months, living in Akersloot (The Netherlands), self employed & proud creator/founder of Controllers of Mayhem. More information can be found on the website.
Secondly; I know the main language on Kickstarter is English and therefore the text will be in English as well, but the game will only be 'sold' in Dutch as I want to start off on a 'small' scale. Perhaps/hopefully in the future I can add an English (and/or other) version(s) to the market.
Last but not least - and the most important one - the introduction of my boardgame. Controllers of Mayhem started out about seven years ago with the idea to make an own board game. Board game enthusiasts say to recognize a touch of Catan, Monopoly & Risk in the game and others experience the GTA (Grand Theft Auto) vibe - which has been my objective from the start. Seven years and many, many, many versions later (thanks to the 250+ unique individuals who play-tested it), the rules & designs for the game are final. With the skillset of graphic artist Frederick van de Bunt, who did an amazing job, as a finishing touch.
Controllers of Mayhem is a strategic board game played by 4 people from 14 years+. It will take about 5-10 minutes to setup the game ready for the first round and the average playtime is 90 minutes. The game is based on free roaming; 'A game mode where players can explore the game environment at will, rather than following a fixed story line'. It is up to you to build your own empire, play & complete missions and destroy your opponents. Do you play passively or are you going head first? The choice is yours and will set the mood on the table!
The game can be played in various ways; Free for all, 2 vs 2 (team-up), but can also develop into a 3 vs 1 if it appears that one of the four players is doing very well. Did you make a wrong choice in the beginning and are you far behind? No worries, nothing is lost!
Eliminate the luck factor? The original rules prescribe the use of three dice. Two 'normal' dice and one police/double dice. If you want to reduce the luck factor - a must especially for the more experienced board game player - then it is possible to omit the two 'normal' dice and only play with the police/double dice. This rule is not described in the manual and will be posted on the website as an add-on.
In short, a legendary-to-be board game for young & old!
General 'simply told' purpose of the game:
Be the first to get 13 points based on personal goals. To gain points, buildings (10 points) must be purchased and missions (3 points) must to played & completed. Will you be the new Controller of Mayhem?
Does that sound easy? Yes it does, doesn't it. Of course there's more to it. The complete manual, with all rules etc., can be downloaded on the website.
Game preparations & getting started:
The box is consisting of the following components (in Dutch language);
- Spelbord / Gameboard (84x56 cm)
- Gebouwen / Buildings
- Kaarten / Cards
- Wapens / Weapons
I choose to keep things simple. No extented strech goals or extra's when the goal meter hits 20.000,- Euro. Just one goal with everything included and when it has reached that goal, the game will be produced with all it's components in full. Simple!
The only exception is the 'create a mission' pledge. I have left open 5 missions which will/can be created by you (or by me if they don't get sold haha). It goes without saying that we will be creating this mission together or at least I will check your mission idea on a couple criteria (f.e. does it already excist? Can it be used in terms of language? Is it playable etc.).
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk for you as a backer, is that you don't like the game once playing it. This is and will always be a personal feeling.
This will be the very first game ever created by me, so I can understand this will raise some question marks. I have always learned that you can only make one first impression and therefore I have done my homework.
Once the Kickstarter is a succes, I will directly proceed with one of these two manufacturers (NSF from The Netherlands or Carta Mundi from Belgium). Both have ensured me that the games will be ready for delivery within 12-14 weeks after the order has been given.
Once all games arrive in our office, I have pre-arranged already some people (read: family & friends) who will help me pack and send all packages through PostNL for a fast delivery.
