About this project

Hello! My name is Stephen Black and I am an American who has lived in Singapore since 2002. I have written a novel set in a historical part of the city, the Armenian Street/ Fort Canning area.
The text has been proofread twice and is nearly finished. The layout and design have been planned, but not finalized. The funds requested for this project will be used for layout, design, photo acquisition, printing, publication and marketing.
Contact With Shadow combines original imagery, historical photography and an unusual story of love and loss. I have been told that it is fun, informative and emotional.
There is a full version of the book available online here:: http://www.scribd.com/doc/29782904/CWS-April-10

Thank you very much,
Stephen Black

    WINE

If you contribute 1 dollar, I will be very grateful. If we can figure out the videochat thing, we can share a toast with a glass of wine. Or water.
AND WAIT- there's more! I will send you links to some of my favorite bands and musicians- bands that you probably do not know. These bands do not scream at you. Yes, their websites have downloadable music. But if you like their music- buy a handful!
OK...a disclaimer...I have to cover myself here....if something nicely bizarre happens and
10, 000 people want to videochat, at a couple of minutes each, that is 20,000 minutes.or two weeks of 24 hour nonstop talking! That is a lot of time and I would be thrilled if that happens....but for now, let's say the limit is one minute.
YOUR DOLLAR WILL HELP A LOT!

    WRITE

The Singapore Philatelic Museum(http://www.spm.org.sg/) is located near Armenian Street, where most of the action in CSW takes place. I will write you a note on an unusual postcard. I will find the most colorful stamps the museum has and mail it to you from the Museum. Conceptual art, collector's item or tribute to On Kawara - you be the judge. I'll just be grateful. Oh yes- you get all the music links described above

    WHEELIN'

Bus Stopping, the underground classic photo book can be yours! Autographed.Includes postage.
“"...meaningful images without a forced sense of nostalgia. The photographs document a city that is surprisingly full of humour and beauty. Singapore has never looked so real."
Cyril Wong, winner of the 2006 Singapore Literature Prize
"It's not about buses but about dislocated spaces in a media capsulated landscape. Buses no longer merely displace people from one place to another;  they are also mobile billboards. You get there, but only by being complicit in capitalist and consumer desires.“
    Stelarc

"With its stunning visuals of a humanized Singapore, Bus Stopping debunks the notion of the island nation being 'just' a commercialized city."
Deepak Gurnani, Singaporean citizen, Indian film producer

... a spontaneous, studied and ever eloquent eye.
Xu Xi, 2007 Man Asian Literary Prize nominee

"... like travelling  through a dreamlike place full of bright colors and faint memories. We can smell the rain and feel the sun. Bus Stopping is relaxing yet subtly emotional. Wonderful."

    WALL ART

Several pages in Contact With Shadow cover an afternoon spent in the National Museum of Singapore. Besides the museum itself, a Belgian exhibition about the concept of Image is written about. However, most of the text describes a floating columbarium of buildings by Singaporean artist Michael Lee. This reward is a poster based on that exhibition, created by Michael and FARM(www.farm.sg ) It was a pleasure to create the text used in that installation and a thrill to offer it to you as reward. The $75 dollar price includes shipping. The poster is 70 cm /27 inches(width) x (height) x 100 cm 39 inches (height). The piece is signed by Michael Lee and Stephen Black. For more information on the poster please visit:http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=148936017061&ref=ts Also, there is an image in my update section on kickstarter.

    WORK IN PROGRESS

So far, there have been twelve hard copies of Contact With Shadow printed out. Each one is filled with handwritten notes, coffee stains, crossed out words and other signs of failure, struggle and progress. Some of them I handbound myself, encouraged by Soon Man Kit, a master bookbinder
This also includes a signed edition of the book itself.. Photos of the books can be seen at Facebook, at the stephenblack/blacksteps page

    WYNKEN de WORDE

You know what's going on! You see this as the basis for a movie and can see how relevant this is to Singapore's heritage and tourist industries. You realize that Contact With Shadow could be a hot movie property and just the thing to put Singapore on the world entertainment radar. The book's coverage of the Malay, Tamil, Chinese, Armenians, Portuguese and British in Singapore definitely attracts you, as does the exciting writing about Fort Canning and Armenian Street. Mentions of the Singapore F-1, Beyonce and ZZ Top don't hurt either. Make a phone call and get Robert Pattinson for the lead and whoever is hot for the female lead!
You are also aware of how important printing and the printed word are. You know that this book will benefit Singapore. You will receive ten free books and be given a mention if this book wins any prizes. If this book makes it to the big screen...your name is in the credits.
Plus I have five scripts/projects in development....you get first look at one we agree upon.
