What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

Constructive Interference is a website for individuals to engage in one-on-one instant messaging with a stranger who has an opposing viewpoint on a specific topic. Our mission is to promote a culture of dialogue, understanding, and fact-based debate in direct contrast to the partisan “echo chambers” that have permeated social media. Conversations will be anonymously archived and ratable based on the respectful, thoughtful, skillful debate of the participants. In this way, users will be incentivized to engage in productive discussion. For those of us who are in communities of people who share a similar worldview, Constructive Interference provides an opportunity to humanize those with whom we disagree if not letting our positions evolve.

Future use may include replacement of traditional linear comment message boards on online media sites, allowing for an increase in user engagement and interactivity with media outlets.

Funding
We spent approximately $7,000 to develop a working prototype and begin to build our second (beta) version that we hope to release. In order to finish building the beta for public release, we're looking to raise an initial $10,000. Your donations will go towards user testing, design changes based on user testing, development, promotion, and technical expenses such as server space.

Trolling/Harassment
We are keenly aware of the perceived risks of trolling and harassment on Constructive Interference. Websites such as Parlio.com have created intelligent and respectful communities nearly free from such behaviors, and we intend to do the same.

Our primary tools in this endeavor are our rating system and revoking privileges for those who violate our code of conduct. Airbnb and Uber have both used such a rating system to differentiate the people who are using those apps for the right reasons from those who are not.

Of course, there will always be some bad apples who don't chat respectfully and who maliciously give out bad ratings to other users without reason. Like Amazon ratings, these can be balanced out with ratings from the reasonable critical mass.

In the worst case scenario, all you have to do with a malicious user is the same thing you'd do with a telemarketer: end the chat.

Curating a community of people that are intelligent, respectful, and want to chat for the right reasons could take some trial and error. It will take an open and flexible approach on our community, and above all, we will need to constantly observe and monitor what works and doesn't work once we release to the public.

Monetization
At this stage, we seek only to create a thriving online community. We would like to find ways for CI to be at minimum self-sustaining with profitability following.

Our primary plan for this would be to partner with a news website or blog that would pay for our services to replace the traditional comments section. To put a Constructive Interference box within a news page will enable users to have a published and shareable one-on-one chat about a controversial article which will increase user engagement and turn reading the news from a passive activity into an active one.

We also hope to monetize by marketing an educational version of CI for debate students in schools where young debaters can practice their skills online in class or for homework with other students affiliated with a registered school.

Risks and challenges

We are already well into the process of developing our beta release, but as you may know, the development process is long and can be full of surprises.

In particular, we want to really figure out how users will best engage with our website and how to best cultivate a community of respectful discourse. With that in mind, we are willing to pivot our model and make changes from our current design before our public release. We hope to release by January 2018, but please be aware that this date could be postponed by several months if we believe that doing so is ultimately in the best interest of our web-based community.
