The Original 1967 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Chart Restored, Recolored, and Reissued.
2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of one of the most monumental events in the history of mankind - The Apollo 11 Project - the first landing of humans on the moon. This Kickstarter campaign is a celebration of that accomplishment.
In 1967, two years before the first man set foot on the moon, NASA had charted the entire route that the command module "Columbia" and the landing module "Eagle" would make on its journey from earth to the moon and back home again and released it as a poster. This chart has now been fully restored, recolored, and - with your support - will be launched as a special reissue.
On July 20, 1969, two American astronauts ( Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin ) became the first men to step foot on the moon. It was a dream and a challenge set forth by one man, President John F. Kennedy, when he declared in May of 1961 :
"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth."
It took years of planning and the work of thousands of people to accomplish this task but on July 16th the massive Saturn V rocket lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center carrying three astronauts on their mission to the moon.
"All this is possible only through the blood, sweat, and tears of a number of people.... All you see [are] the three of us, but beneath the surface are thousands and thousands of others."
- Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins
Thousands of people across America and the world watched in anticipation, and all those years of planning culminated in celebration on that exciting day.
The Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Chart proves how well planned out the project was even two years prior to when the Saturn V launched the capsule into space. Stages of the launch, orbit, descent, and return were precisely calculated...and those who owned this chart at the time could have followed along with the astronauts on every leg of the journey.
This chart is a wonderful paper souvenir of one of the most glorious events in humankind and yet very few people own it. So I hope to change that with this project.
I have fully restored this original lunar landing chart, bringing out the deep blacks of outer space, and the details of the capsule drawings. Then I changed the hues of the earth and moon ( to give it that added sci-fi punch ) and colored the text and lines, adding plenty of "stars" too.
A fifty-year-old chart given new life.....it deserves it.
This reissue of The Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Chart will measure 1' x 3' ( 12" x 36"/30cm x 92cm ). It will be printed on 80lb glossy cover stock with a UV coating and feature a 1/4" border - in black - so it will be easy to frame. The title block will also feature foil stamping to really commemorate the occasion. This is a standard panorama frame size as well, so pre-made frames can easily be purchased.
Simple rewards for a humble, but worthy, project......
THE STICKER SET - $5
One 4" circular sticker featuring the original artwork from the Apollo 11 mission patch. The astronauts had wanted the image on the patch to be symbolic so they chose a bald eagle with its "landing gear" extended. The eagle is a proud symbol of the United States but it was also the name of the lunar module. To symbolize the peaceful nature of the mission, the eagle is carrying an olive branch - the symbol of peace.
Also, included will be two 3" x 6" stickers of the original Apollo 11 logo.
THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR LANDING CHART - $30
One Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Chart + the sticker set. This is what this project is all about. It measures 12" x 36" ( 30cm x 92cm ) and will come shipped rolled in a tube. As a bonus, you'll also receive all of the stickers!
THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR LANDING CHART X2 - $60
Two ( 2 ) Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Charts + two ( 2 ) sticker sets. Double the charts, double the stickers.
THE APOLLO 11 PROJECT SET ( Limited to 100 ) - $50
Two ( 2 ) Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Charts + two ( 2 ) sticker sets + one ( 1 ) 11x14" double-sided poster featuring images of the original concept artwork of the landing and command modules. A bonus poster, plus a discount! This is a Kickstarter exclusive.
While this project is listed under my name - Constance Metzinger - it will actually be a joint effort by my sister, Diana, and myself. I enjoy the restoration work, all design aspects of the project, and handling "customer service" while Diana takes care of packaging duties. Currently, she is running her own Kickstarter campaign called The Past in Focus which also deals with history - restoring historic photographs. I hope you take the time to check out her project!
I'd like to thank NASA for generously providing images of the Apollo 11 project and special thanks to all of the men and women involved in the various Apollo projects from its beginning in 1966.
Risks and challenges
My sister and I operate a photo business and we are constantly packaging prints and posters for our customers, so order fulfillment is not an issue for us.
The chart has already been restored, so no snags there. The printer that I will be working with always does amazing work, so no worries there. In truth, I foresee no visible delays in launching this project, except in the event of a meteor crashing to earth or a health calamity falling upon me ( I hope not! ).
Our last project - The Spotting Chart Project - was accomplished and fulfilled on time, and - by george! - this one will be too!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
