THE NEWS: a card game by the Young Coneys

Hello, we are Coney, a BAFTA award-winning collection of makers sparking change through play. We make theatre, games, adventures - where people can take a meaningful part. Our projects take place anywhere people can connect and gather. And we’ve run successful Kickstarter campaigns for four of our projects: Early Days (Of A Better Nation), Adventure One, REMOTE, and A Game of Legacy.

This Kickstarter campaign is a little different. We want to raise funds for the making of a new game by our resident company of young makers - the Young Coneys. This brilliant group of 8-13 year olds want to make a card game about what they want to change in the world, for you (grown-ups) to play, guided by them via your screens.  

Crucially – all donations received by backers who haven’t donated to Coney before, will be matched by the Arts Council as part of Catalyst Evolve. This means that for every £1 you pledge - they give £1 too!

WHO ARE THE YOUNG CONEYS? 

The Young Coneys are a company of young makers using their creativity to change the world. Unlike a more typical youth theatre group, we offer a core group of 26 local young people a rolling education in play and change-making, through regular workshops in person and our Magic Postal Service engaging them at home. The programme helps these young makers identify their superpowers and nurture their passions. The Young Coneys are the future voices of Coney, heard now.

'Coney is very special to us because they do seriously bonkers stuff brilliantly! The team members are brilliant with children. (Our daughter is selective mute due to anxiety issues and doesn't talk at school). The way the Coney team talk to her is amazing, they're really kind, genuinely interested and really listen to her ideas and opinions. Coney has given her a chance to do something just for her and given her opportunities she will always remember.... We love Coney!'

WHAT WILL THE GAME BE?

In workshops through 2019, the Young Coneys have been delving deeper into what issues in the world they want to change. At the top of the list was Fake News

Where do we get our information from? How do we know when we are being told the truth? What are the stakes when that information informs the way we grow in and respond to the world? 

The Young Coneys' burning questions will form the basis of THE NEWS - their brilliant insights and imaginations guarantee that it will be loads of fun to play!

· You the player will receive a pack of cards with an instruction sheet, and a url.

· You’ll then open the url on a screen - laptop or tablet - and have it on the table with the cards.

· Through your screen the Young Coneys will help you and a group of friends or family play. They will offer instructions and tips, told through audio and illustrations. 

THE NEWS will be an infinitely re-playable experience – something you can take with you wherever you go and play with whoever you like, however many times you like.

BUT DON’T TAKE IT FROM US…

In the last year, the Young Coneys have garnered an impressive reputation using their imagination to get their voices heard. Two highlights include their collaboration with Greenpeace on Codename: Violet disrupting the Society of Motor Manufacturers annual Christmas dinner with an important message about air pollution, to creating and starring in a professional immersive show for an audience of adults in The Droves.

'Without the brave, creative and dedicated kids from the Young Coneys we literally could not have produced this piece…it was the Young Coneys who brought it to life, their one-liners were gold, their input and involvement gave the piece an authenticity that it would never have achieved without them. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Donate 

We want to give the Young Coneys the biggest possible platform to get their voices heard, and impact as many people as possible. Ensuring we have the resources to properly support their artistic learning ultimately feeds the longevity of this important opportunity for budding change makers. 

Our target is £7, 500, and this will pay for:

-  A series of game making workshops for the Young Coneys led by expert artists. These cost £350 a session to run, we will be running six in total - so a total cost of £2,100

-  A team of expert designers and programmers bringing the Young Coneys’ vision to life

-  The production and shipping costs of THE NEWS  

Any extra money raised will go towards funding the next phase of the Young Coneys’ Programme set to launch in September 2019.

We’re doing this Kickstarter to raise funds for the material costs of making and distributing THE NEWS  and paying collaborators. But there is an equally important mission that we need your help with…

Risks and challenges

We are facing an unknown in that we don't know *exactly* what the game will be yet, this is because it’s important to keep that open as part of the process of making it together with the Young Coneys. But we’ve got the theme, format, and a brilliant team of artists and experts who have been making work with Coney for years, collaborating with the Young Coneys and on our wider programme. Plus, we have a structured project plan, with regular scheduled workshops to realise our vision. We can’t wait to get started.
