Imagine you’re in a theatre of the future, powered by an algorithm.
REMOTE arrives to help your town become more like the place of your dreams.
We are here to help you be more like people like you.
We are here to offer you choice (because we already know that people like you like choice).
Here’s Sally. You are all playing Sally. She dreams of freedom. Let’s see how she goes.
REMOTE is a new piece of theatre, which you the audience can play.
A playful parable about freedom of choice and the future, and the human impact of the pervasive systems governing our lives. It’s interactive theatre for a (mostly) sit-down audience, interrogating the politics of choice, the Uberisation of everything, and living in an immaterial world.
You the audience are playing a game which runs the future of your town. In this game you collectively play a woman, you choose her name. Perhaps SALLY. The game is a system voiced by two operators, performers in the room with you but it's as if they are thousands of miles away. To make choice, you raise a card; but if you do nothing, it's always the second option. The system starts nudging you to find true agency inside it...

REMOTE premieres at Camden People's Theatre for two weeks from Tuesday 19 - Saturday 30th April 2016.
We already have the core resource to make a very basic version of REMOTE, but we would love to turn it into a truly bespoke interactive theatre show that responds to its place that it's in. REMOTE is a touring performance and with your help we can make a responsive version; that adapts to include the personality of every village, town or city that we’re in.
REMOTE is very gently interactive theatre, it doesn’t put its audience on the spot, and it plays in their imaginations. Following the London run REMOTE will travel to different parts of the country; for audiences to play across the regions. It's designed to fit any space where we can reach our audience best. This may be your local theatre, or arts centre. It may also be a disused shop, a village hall or a pub.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?
From other sources, we have the means to make a basic version of the show. But your support will help us buy the technology so that our brilliant performers who are the operators of the system, can deliver a script which will be totally responsive to the place we are in. And to make advance games which you can play on your device wherever you are, and exciting reconnaissance missions in your town.
Our target of £3000 will cover the making of the show to premiere in April. If we stretch beyond that goal, we’ll have the means to repeat performances in other cities which are truly responsive to those places it visits. We’ll be open to requests!
JOIN US ON THE JOURNEY
All of Coney’s work is immersive and interactive - inviting audiences to take a meaningful part and play (if they choose). This means we take you, the audience on a journey with us and genuinely respond to your actions and ideas. This, our third Kickstarter campaign, will be no different. We’ll keep all our supporters up-to-date with the development of the project, without spoiling its surprises, and we’ll be really interested to hear your thoughts and ideas. There are some exciting rewards for your support - all of them exclusive to our Kickstarter backers. We can’t wait to get started!
Risks and challenges
Coney have been making brilliant, inspiring work since 2006. We are a National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England and a registered charity no: 1156864.
We’ve made experiences like Adventure 1, playing theatre like the critically acclaimed A Small Town Anywhere and had a hand in the BAFTA-winning Nightmare High for Channel 4 Education.
The line of practice feeding REMOTE draws from Coney's acclaimed toolkits; in interaction design and engaging individual people in a meaningful way. Our work takes place anywhere that people gather: in theatres, schools, museums, on the streets and online and always follows the principles of adventure, curiosity and loveliness.
When developing new projects, it's always a journey. An experiment, and an adventure. But we’ve been testing REMOTE since 2014 over various scratch performances and R&D, with hundreds of audiences who have responded and contributed along the way. We’re now ready to take it forward into a full production - all the while taking our audiences with us as co-creators.
We'll keep in touch with you throughout the development. If anything unexpected crops up, we'll let all our supporters know. And we hope that you'll share your ideas and experiences with us in return.
In the meantime, wish us luck. We'll see you on the other side.
